I dug Vega. He was a big, huggable meathead of the Ron Perlman/Henry Rollins variety.

Also far less suspect a guy than either Kaidan and Jacob.

His powers did not really fit with my shep. As a character i was so so on him at first but he grew on me. Never took him on missions but still wanted to hear what he had to say. And hey, garrus seemed to like him and that makes him ok in my book. XD

He was OK. But I too would have rather had my old friends than a new character for the final game.

Better than Kaidan or Jacob.

I was dead set on hating him, but he turned out to be an okayish fella. Less shallow than the aforementioned, but still a long way to go compared to the likes of Garrus. He felt too much like a stereotype, whereas the others were fully developed characters at that point.
Then again, he's 2 games short. Might turn out quite likeable

If I had to pick, I'd take one of my old squadmates over him any day though. Jack or Wrex? Yes please!

I liked Vega. He's sort of Garrus lite.EDI was much worse.

I liked James Vega, what I did not like about him doesn't make me dislike the character over all though.

Like:
-He is a cool laid back bro. Had he been in the game since the first game he would be in a close race with Garrus in the bud race. Like Garrus, he sees Shepard as a just a human, one who is a bad ass but accepts him/her as one of the "guys".

-He is not the smartest guy, neither is Ash neither is Kaiden. The difference between them and the other two is Ash and Kaiden wear their emotions on their sleeves and James doesn't Actually out of the three I would see he is the more thoughtful.

Dislike

-We already got Cortez, and if you're not going to get a hispanic male to VA Vega, then the character should have been white. The accent was pretty bad, and some of the voice mannerisms were stereotyped.

-Another variation of the soldier. Note this has nothing to do with the perceived lunkhead personality, this is the class. While not a biotic soldier still a soldier. If I want heavy fire support II can take him, Javik, or Ashley. Honestly this wouldn't be an issue if Javik had been a science guy, but we got what we got. Been cool if James were vanguard or infiltrator.

IMO people don't like like Vega for a few reasons.

a) They either can't relate to him, because in real life he would be the popular guy everyone would want to hang with. He's the guy who has a life, gets girls, effortlessly gets people to like him.

B) He was handled badly. He was introduced in the last game and not given enough time to be fleshed. His character had less interaction than Javik and you never really get to know him, where as Javik gets plenty of time to be expressed to the audience. That maybe because Freddie's time is expensive so they had to limit his lines or something. Outside of the reporter, the others who had less time were established characters, so they are more readily accepted.

C) His battlefield role is redundant.

I like James a lot. He's a likable, genuine guy. He's a badass marine. He crashed that shuttle on Mars. I really like Vega. I found him likable and entertaining.

I was a little turned off by him in the beginning of the game, but he grew on me by the end. It was hard for me to use any of the new squad mates (Vega, EDI, Javik) for very long though because I'd played through ME1 and 2 and felt much closer to Garrus, Tali, and Liara.

I like Vega, but when I think of all the other possibilities, I can't help feeling slightly disappointed. I was hoping for a batarian squadmate.

I did like Vega. He got a bit boring near the ending, but still left a good impression.

Although i can't say he was a must have in this game. I'd rather prefer some of the old faces got more work put into them than a whole new squaddie

The same goes for EDI really

Wiki:

Prinze grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was raised Roman Catholic also embracing his Puerto Rican heritage. where he learned about Spanish and Puerto Rican culture from his paternal grandmother. He speaks fluent Spanish and Italian.

:D

Also, what do you mean "we already got Cortez"? Are we only allowed to have one latino onboard the Normandy at any one time?

I think he's great. The conversation on the Presidium right after Mars did it for me. Took him with me a lot. Ash, not so much.

I actually liked Vega, the banter was great, light, no pressure and didn't end up in some weird place with me gong "lets just be friends"  I think they must have based his character on Bill Paxton's space marine in Aliens because for some reason Vega reminded me of Paxton.

And yet we got what we got, as an actor with that knowledge he should've tried to adlib more.
