No love for Irrational?

Swat 4 and System Shock are awesome but I don't really like anything else including Bioshock.

1. Valve
2. CD Projekt RED
3 Bioware
4. Irrational
5. Obsidian

I wish I can add Rockstar and Naughty Dog but seeing as they prefer to fork over the good stuff to console players, I can't really judge.

Just to break the trend a bit...

1. Remedy. (I love them for Alan Wake.)
2. Thatgamecompany (Journey is the only game I've ever finished and thought: "This is definitely art.")
3. Quantic Dream (I also love Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy. Even if their sex scenes are really awkward...)

Valve and Blizzard, whether you love or hate their games there is no denying that these 2 companies consistently put out high quality products.

You only like Remedy for Alan Wake? Have you played Max Payne?!

I really tried, but the visuals of the first Max Payne were hard to take.

I still firmly believe in Bioware, despite having my trust shaken to the core with we know what so they're on my list. I also have to give it to Bungie. Those guys just want to make games that they know they themselves will want to play, and I don't know what it is about the people at Bungie, but it seems like whatever they're interested in playing ends up being what the public at large enjoys too. Also they're friends with Nathan Fillion. The win.

Valve and Blizzard, if we are talking about sheer quality and consistency of released products.

I am surprised to see Obsidian mentioned on here at all. Have they released a single game that wasn't broken from balls to brains?

Yes.

KoToR2? That's the only game of their's I haven't touched. NWN2, Alpha Protocol, Dungeon Siege 3, and Fallout New Vegas are all good, but they are still broken, which is a pretty bad track record. If you can look past the flaws, more power to you.

*sprays power juice*

EDIT: Bungie does make super good games. They really only stumbled with ODST.

Kotor 2 is awesome. Also QA is usually handled by the publishers not the devs and if you look at Obsidian's history you can see the publishers have rushed them since they are can get away with it. Lucas Arts hurt Obsidian more than any other Obsidian game or maybe Bethesda and New Vegas.

But this is about quality right? Obsidian releases top quality games with great characters and hardly tells a generic story unlike you know Bioware.

Kotor 2's wound in the force is still a great story. It turned the the perfect Jedi into something broken and weak and also turned the Sith from an obvious evil into something more sinister. I will always love Kotor 2 especially since Kreia is one of the best characters in a game ever. Her grand plan was something really crazy and something that could have changed the entire Star Wars Galaxy yet Obsidian down plays her importance until near the end. I was very shocked when I had returned to Dantooine. Seagloom I know you have to appreciate her right? Also the influence system of Kotor 2 is really great. I loved it and I wish Bioware had tried something similar for Mass Effect 2 instead of the cheap loyalty missions.

Alpha Protocol had a unique story with evil corporations manipulating the world trying to force a cold war. Real choice and consequences with characters who aren't as they appear. I pity anyone who has kill Shaheed.

Now I haven't played Dungeon Siege III or New Vegas but I know NV has a lot of ideas from Van Burean which is was supposed to be the real Fallout 3. Not the trash Bethesda released.

As for Neverwinter Nights II all I have to say is

Image IPB

Now I am not saying they are without fault but purely story and C&C wise they are top notch.

I have huge luck with their products then. Dont had any problems with Alpha Protocol or Kotor 2. Only a little with Fallout Vegas, but this hadnt more bugs then games made by bethesda.

Considering the time and bugdet their get they deliver excellent work.

Eidos Montreal made the great Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Broken?
I thought broken means they dont run at all or damn near unplayable.
A few crashes here and there hardly = broken.

It sounds like you are referring to game design here, not bugs. That is completely subjective.

She is one of the best game characters ever written. That she is a woman is incidental, but serves to make her more awesome. It is very rare to see a well written woman in games without a song and dance about her gender. KotOR2 remains memorable for Kreia alone.

In no particular order, including dead studios :

CDProjekt RED (The Witcher)
Thatgamecompany (Journey)
Troïka (Vampire The Masquerade : Bloodlines)
Obisidian (Mask of The Betrayer)
Black Isle (Baldur's gate)
Eidos Montreal (Deus Ex : Human Revolution)
Arkane Studios (Dark Messiah Might and Magic)
Arrowhead studios (Magicka)
Frictionnal games (Amnesia : The Dark Descent)

I like all of the above not only because of their great game, but also because I at least respect(ed) their viewpoint on the industry, and them as developers.

EDIT : Forgot CCP (Eve Online) those are pretty cool guys.

A lot of my favorite RPG devs have been mentioned already, so I'll add Naughty Dog and Insomniac to the list as my favorite non-RPG developers.

Kreia is probably my only case of a character that I hated at first but soon learned to love more than any other character in the game. The change happened entirely in a single conversation no less.

It's when Kreia says that you have to be cautious of your crew members, treat them as tools and nothing more, because they might betray you when you're at your weakest otherwise. To that, because she'd done nothing but whine the entire trip, I angrily replied:

Me: "So I need to treat you like a tool as well? Sounds good to me"
Kreia: "Yes, now you're learning"

It's like a switch in my brain had been turned on. Kreia is many things, but not a hypocrite. Every time she badmouthed you, it wasn't because you did something against her will, it's because she's looking after you and will openly tell you off if you do something not beneficial to you in the long run, or something that's simply not smart in her opinion.

my current favorites are BioWare and GearBox. I played Dragon Age Origins and Borderlands a lot in recent years. and most likely in this year, my play time will be dominated by mass effect 3 and borderlands 2.
