OP said "best or personal favorite" and by best he didn't clarify in terms of gameplay, story telling, characters or anything really.

Obsidian is one of the best imo for their writing.

At the moment it's pretty easy CD Projekt.

Obsidian would be my favorite if only Feargus could produce his own games like at Black Isle. Obsidian publishers wreck their games: see, Alpha Protocol opening, anything Bethesda bugs out, etc. But as a developer, they're my favorite, but they desperately need to find more gamer friendly publishing arrangements.

CDPR has potential, but is skating on thin ice. They consoled Witcher 2, and it was a significant drop off from the first game.

Rockstar is the company that I think can dominate the market in the near future as they branch out. If they ever learn how to do game mechanics worth a crap, and branch out in to RPG/adventure games, they'll own the world. LA Noire is an absolute masterpiece. They could become the next Sierra (under the Williams' early reign).

My dream merger is Rockstar and Obsidian in bed together somehow. Those two companies manage to walk the line between art, commerce, and customer service better than anyone operating right now.

Edit: One reason I'm so bullish on Rockstar is that they are largely fearless. If they want to write a grown up game, they do it, and damn the torpedoes. Even after the hesitation from the great "coffee" nightmare.

Double Edit: I'm new to Naughty Dog, but they also do great production work. UC2 and 3 are short, but severely high quality outings. I award high points to companies that take care with their production values and don't rush product to the point of destruction (which is why I view Bethesda so poorly, in spite of their ambition).

...I have a feeling that if I typed, "My point still stands," I would be flamed until my virtual skin was burnt to a nice, crispy state of non-existence.

EDIT: I feel I should ever-so-slightly elaborate. While I do not find the writing outstanding/best/etc, the vocal directing is top-notch.

Bethesda, in keeping to their core and trying to cater to more fans by making better games instead of streamlining them for masses

CDPR, who - agendas or not - have a great attitude towards their customers

Valve - who made (and are making DOTA2, and I love them for it)

...

Blizzard is undeniably ridiculously successful, but WoW basically ruined the MMORPG genre for the foreseeable future, so I'm biased against them. :D

For RPGs:

Game world designed by Bethesda.
Characters written by BioWare.
Faction system handled by Obsidian.
CDPR for graphics.

Blizzard! :D although the expansion takes forever but its worth the wait. compare to bioware's mass effect 3. they extended it but its still a nightmare. I hope they make another WarCraft 4!

I posted that I felt Blizzard and Valve were great developers. Someone else mentioned Bungie, and  I agree with that sentiment. It's really hard, though, because so many developers will release a gem, but they'll also have some questionable releases on their resume. :?

I've concluded Warcraft 4 will never come, mostly due to the cash cow known as WoW. That and RTS aren't nearly as profitable, we may see WoW 2-20 before Warcraft 4 sadly. That being said Blizzard still is pretty consistent in quality all things considered, but they are slow...insanely slow, that and their care for the community is pretty meh. But you have to remember activision so, ya.

Valve/Steam is the only independent powerhouse in the industry which seems to care about the community. Even with TF2 as an example, over 4 years later the game is still getting multiple updates a month for free, and when people complain about balance, such as making hats give stat bonuses, Valve listens and in the future doesn't produce anymore such set hats with bonuses. That is just one example of many of course.<3

I'm a Relic fan. Homeworld may be the single greatest PC game ever made.

ed. Shocked at the lack of Relic love in this thread as a whole. There used to be a whole bunch of us back in the day.

Rockstar have never done wrong in my eyes, when they release DLC, they release 7-8 hour long expansion packs, which I respect and how DLC should be handled, the quality of their games is unmatched, Grand Theft Auto IV (Lost and Damned & Ballad of Gay Tony), Red Dead Redemption (Undead Nightmare) and L.A Noire, also, Max Payne, which releases next month, looks great.

I respect them and Take-Two because they don't rush theur games, they always have a 3-4 year wondow to develop games and it pays off, 22 million GTA IV units moved, 10 million plus RDR and 6 million L.A Noire units moved.

Take-Two knows time equals quality, stop rushing your games E.A and you'll probably move those numbers.

Well after Valve I'll name some other ones I'm fond of, because everyone seems too
CD Projeckt
Naughty Dog (Uncharted F-ya)
Guerrilla Games (they listen TOO much to the community though which is their fault)
Blizzard (begrudgingly but they earned it)
Bethesda (they make good games, end of story, and they are often a modder's paradise)
Free Radical (before they died)
Square soft (before they mutated into the hybrid monster known as Square Enix)
A few random Japanese developers I can't recall atm lol.

Also some shout outs for Ubisoft, only for OSX support though, beyond that nothing positive to say.

1) Blizzard. If I'm not playing one of their games, I'm waiting for their next release.
2) Bethesda Buggy releases but I love the sandbox and the ability to mod. Haven't played their titles as much as Blizzard's though.
3) Bioware. Used to be 2) but they let me down twice. The other 2 have yet to disappoint me.
