When there's around, oh.. say 5-10 enemies on the screen. The game's reaction time just seems to slow down. Way down. Launch a fireball at a group of enemies and nothing happens. 10 seconds later, there's an explosion. Throw out a cone of cold and the animation plays, but nothing happens. 15 seconds later people start freezing. Even the guy who ran all the way down at the other end of the battlefield. What's up with that? Anybody else have this problem? Anyway to fix it? My computer isn't even a year old yet and it cost me a pretty penny. My girlfriend got a quad-core at the same time I ordered mine, and I decided to get a laptop. A gaming laptop with an overclocked videocard (factory overclocked). It plays everything flawlessly. Oblivion. Left 4 Dead. I don't understand how I can have 50 zombies on my screen with no lag, but this game lags so badly with less than 10. And my girlfriend is complaining of the same issue to me (yes I bought her a copy of Dragon Age). Now, should a quad-core PC built for games (yes, her video card is also factory overclocked) be suffering from such a thing?

I suspect it's not my computer or my girlfriends. So what is going on to cause this? It's really annoying.

I don't have that issue at all, but I play on my desktop. I can only imagine the highest, high end laptop could run this game flawlessly. What are the specs on your lap top?

Did you patch it? No problems from my end... and I'm probably having a sub-standard GPU for the current generation - a 128MB ATi Radeon 2400HD XT.

np at all like that? maybe patch or try turning your graphics down. One thing i have noticed though is that after a few hours of play loading times start to increase and where i would have a 2 or 3 second load screen i now have a 30 sec. so i am guessing there is a memory leak in there somewhere

Post this in tech support. I assume you guys have the same video card and the same driver version so I'd check to see if you're both up-to-date.

Also, did you try running the game at the factory recommended timing? Since everything is going through DirectX for most games I don't see how it could be a problem but it wouldn't hurt to try,

Yeah I patched it. I also downloaded the new PhysX, which improved it a little. The patch improved it a little, also. I got the new driver from Nvidia, didn't help. The messed up thing is, I can turn all the video options completely down to low, and nothing changes. It's not the graphics. But I sometimes wonder if it's my anti-virus software. I run Avast!. My question is, can I unplug my internet and boot in clean mode and play this game? I read somewhere you have to be online to even load or save a game. Meh.. here's my spex.

I can't help you with any of your other problems, but I can attest to the fact that you certainly can play without being connected to the internet (unless there's something funky about where you bought the game, I guess). I have the retail PC version with DVD, and played for 4 hours on an airplane flight recently with no internet connection at all.

Well I will try playing in Clean Boot mode without an internet connection and see if it improves things. Maybe it is Avast!. If it isn't, then I guess I am stuck with a laggy game. Oh, if only you knew how hard I have it at the endgame. Fighting those hordes of enemies with a 15 seconds delay in my attacks and spells. It's a wonder I finished the game at all the first time.

<-- raises hand to seeing the load times slow down after playing for several hours.

I will agree that there is a memory leak. Since this game was obviously written in Visual C++, there's no doubt about it, really. Only way to fix it is to reboot your PC and free up your memory.

Hmmm, I've never had to reboot, generally shutting the game down for 30 minutes, then restarting solves the problem for me. But then, I am running it in Windows 7 Professional.

Well, from my experience, running A/V apps can bog down OSes.....

I know Dragon Age was written to really take advantage of multi-core cpus. So a quad will get significant gains over a duo in this case, and its one of the first games to really do so lately, optimally at least.

So if you both are having issues, I'd imagine it must be the antivirus getting in the way and hogging some cycles.

I have a 2.4 ghz core2quad and a 512MB 9600GSO, which is a cheap POS card now, and i run at max settings with very little lag, never had been an issue. I imagine i get about 16 fps at times, but its certainly playable. I dont run any virus scanners at all though.

I have seen that issue as well, but not as bad as you're describing it. I also run Avast so that may be the problem. I am running it on a brand new gaming laptop from Asus.

It very possibly could be your antivirus software.  try adding the enture dragon age folder as an exception, or disable the antivirus while playing.

How often do you reboot? Most games I find you should reboot after several hours of playing to maintain performance.

Just letting everyone know that it was NOT my anti-virus software. I ran the game offline in clean boot mode and nothing changed whatsoever. The game just gets laggy for no reason, and turning down all video settings to their lowest settings changes nothing (besides the fact that things are uglier). I really wish I knew what the hell was going on, this is really irritating.

I had that happen during the last parts of game only. I assumed it was due to the fact that the darkspawn kept spawning at doorways and bridges and simply weren't registered as spawned by the game until they reached a certain point (passed the bridge, reasonably away from the doorway) to avoid spawn camping so to speak :P

It didn't happen in any other situations and I played the game for quite a while non stop on the first day >.>
