Let's not all look at ME2 with rose-coloured glasses because ME3 falls flat on its face. ME2 had a number of problems that FORTUNATELY weren't overshadowed by a horribly nonsensical ending. Also, the overall gameplay of ME2 was better than 1 so it had that going for it.

Let's not forget, however:

- Thermal Clips- Just how did Shepard know her gun needed one after she woke up?
.

Im pretty sure they could have introduced thermal clips after ME1 but before ME2, as ME2's story doesnt begin straight after ME1

I don't thik this is actually true. Doesn't Kasumi have a line rating of 2 (if loyal)? That would mean she has no impact one way or another on that part, and I'm not sure where else she would make it harder to survive.

Kasumi actually has a line rating of 0 (1 if she's loyal). You actually have to do 2 more loyalty missions to bump up your score to actually be successful.

Where as recruiting Zaeed means you can forego one loyalty mission

Mass Effect 1, still the best in my opinion. Every single minute gave me goosebumps, and the plot twists and dramatics were some of the best moments in gaming and roleplaying. I don't even know how many playthroughs I've done, but they've been quite a lot.

Honestly Mass Effect 2 didn't hit the spot, for me. I've only played it the one time, though. Perhaps if I ever play it again in the future, I'll be able to look at it from a fresh angle and not from a "I'm so crazy about ME1 and can't wait for ME2" setting myself up for disappointment angle.

ME3 was such an irony. Throughout 90% of the game, I was thinking to myself "I can't wait to play ME1 *and* 2 again"...because the game was so epic. I was amazed that Bioware was pulling it off so perfectly. It felt like making up with your RLLI after an argument, but without the better benefits.

Then the ending happened. And you felt like filing for divorce.

Even so, I'd still say from an individual perspective, for me. It would go ME1>ME3>ME2.

Except for shooting mechanics and music, Mass Effect 1 by far was the best game in the series. The story in the first game far exceeds that of the other 2, simply because it's well-written and most importantly well executed.

This.

Okay, we've definitely got the rose-tinted glasses on now. I'm right now in the middle of my ninth playthrough, and I can tell you that I can't wait to get back to the newer ones.

The story - and the ending, I would contend - are the best of the series, but there are a tonne of other things that ME2 and 3 do so much better. The zones in ME1 feel cold and static, whereas they really come alive in the second two. The characters are stiff, and there's no interaction with the environment. Walls of text instead of actual conversations or cutscenes. Every side quest takes place in either a copy/pasted bunker or a copy/pasted above-ground building. The characterisation doesn't go as deep, and so on and so forth.

Mass Effect 1 is an amazing game, but, even without that special magic, ME2 supersedes it in a massive number of areas.

Yeah ME1 hands down the best. But I would say I injoyed ME2 more then ME3. So there you have it...

In what universe would ME1 be the best part of the series? The main story was good and the introduction to the new franchise was nice, but else? The side missions and Mako sequences were boring ands awful, the inventory and loot system was a pure mess and the combat gameplay worked on a rudimentary level at best.
ME2 had its flaws, too. The main storyline didn't really move the story forward and you could cut most of it out of the series, without losing really important parts. The planet scanning was boring and needless, the skill and inventory system was now too superficial, since you would only skill one ability not and max out pretty much everything else and the Reaper level was probably the biggest let down of the series until the very ending of ME 3, because instead of making a great level to remember, they simply throw countless husks on you, as if the science team was like 10.000 men strong.

So yeah, ME 1 and ME2 had their weak points too. Don't get me wrong, I love the series (until its last 20 minutes at least), but it still has flaws, that you can clearly point out and that make ME1 and ME2 (in my opinion of course) not really better than ME3 (minus the endings).

Yeah, people are either wearing rose-tinted glasses, or hype-tinted monicle... (you know, when a new game comes out...new game syndrome.)

I've played the trilogy straight through now, and go with ME2>ME3>ME1.

It's extremely difficult to be objective (I'm not even close) but playing the trilogy again straight through is as close as you can get I think.

Mass Effect 2 simply because i enjoyed playing it more from start to finish.

This can change however when bioware releases patches and dlc.

Just because ME3 had a bad ending doesn't make it the least popular of the series. What make it the least popular (IMO) is alot of things were lacking. The ending crazyness forshadowed alot of other proplems this game had. So let's start. First off many great characters in the series were shoehorned. Namely the ME2 characters. For a game that let you explore relationships and made you care about these characters really didn't deliver in ME3. If you romanced any other character besides the ME1 cast, you got the big finger. So way the heck give us the ability to ramance a ME2 character if most of us wasn't going to get closure. (I think the people who loved thane and Jacob understands.)

Another point ME3 fails is dialogue. What happened to my middle option Bioware? But not only that, why is it when I talk to my crew there's no interaction going on? In ME1 and 2 we always got to enter a converstion, you know when the conversation wheel showed up. Now it's just, you watch Shepard speak to the crew with a preset converstion. No interaction at all.

And the last point why I think ME3 fails, is the story. Yes the story. All of it seem dull and boring, to the point where I was asking myself  "Are we done yet?" it was a broken mess held together with big explosions, that's it. Sure the begining was ingaging, but the sparkles soon disappeared as I dove deeper in. Everything seemed rushed, it started to feel as if I was just going from point A, to point B, then to point C. Missions just started to feel like chores, and there was no decent exploration or sidemissions to destract me from feeling like this.

All and all I think both ME1 and 2 were the perfect childern of this series, and ME3 was the red headed stepchild whom was left sitting in the corner.

Opposite for me. It gave me more immersion into the game. Having known that my MP characters had fought their before. Try to hold the base and/or weaken it's defenses constantly. Just so that later Shep can have a better chance to take over? That was awesome. In an rpg sense it made what I did in MP actually take part into the story in some way.

You'll find story wise its actually the opposite. Shepard goes in first and secures the area, then your MP characters go in and hold it against assaults by enemy forces. Shepard does the battle first, and your MP character holds the points Shepard captured.

Actually by the looks of it it is a combination of both. Ranging from the Alliance losing a certain base and/or settlement after protecting it for so long. Then Shep coming to permanently take it back. Such as the colonist N7 mission on Benning and the last N7 mission you do and the one on Tuchunka.

Better combat, better weapon upgrades/customization, better talent trees, less dull and linear maps, more loot, more cohesive storyline, good to great conclusions for all the minor plotlines. That's ME3.

I've played through it twice now, and I still think it's the best of the series.
