Educated people have known since the ancient greeks that it is spherical, yep. Commoners may well not have.

Dont you know history? They did know it was round! The ancient greeks even calculated the size of the Earth almost exactly.

If you know history then you know what the Dark Ages were?

"Dark Ages" is one of the biggest historical misnomers there is. It was coined in a time when history was divided into three "Ages" (classical [Light], Dark Ages, and Modern [then Rennaissance, seen as reemerging Light]) and reflects more the pervasive pro-Roman bias than actual historical fact. Most European historical scholars do not use this term. The Middle Ages (particularly the High Middle Ages) witnessed remarkable achievement and scholarship in fields like Engineering (Castle construction, Trebuchets, milling devices, and more), among other things.

And here I was thinking it was because they did not have light bulbs.

I'm starting to wonder if this world will make a cameo in Mass Effect 2, as an easter egg or such.

Good to know, I'm not much of a historian myself.

That said, a lot of scientific knowledge (mostly less immediately practical, e.g. astronomy) was lost during the Medieval period in Europe. The various Arabic-speaking kingdoms of the time were largely at the forefront of "pure" scientific research.

Bluesmith I found it odd that even the religion mirrors our world.

I at first thought andrastey(or however you spell that name) may be an allegory for Marry but shes more of a female Jesus.Same goes for those ashes that mirror the legends of the holy grail.Just one thing that im surprised about.I havnt finished the game yet so I dont know if there in there.I have not heard anyone mention any angels.Only demons.

Indeed. It's often difficult to have these kinds of conversations when there is a large disparity between what is taught in high school and what is learned in a graduate setting (even self-teaching far surpasses public schooling, sadly). It's not a slight, it's just reality.

A more accurate characterization is probably something like Pre-Civilization, Mesopotamian Civilizations (from the quasi-Empire of Sumer to Babylon to Neo Babylon and Akkadia, perhaps so far as the rise of Media and Achamenid Persia) which was mostly contemporary with other Civilizations such as the three Egyptian Kingdoms, Kush, proto-China and Korea, etc., classical (Greece/Rome), Neo-classical (Rome through to the rise of Byzantium in Constantinople, the eventual sacking of Rome by, inter alia, Vandals), then the three generally accepted medieval subdivisions (Early Middle Ages, High Middle Ages, Late Middle Ages), then more familiar terms like Renassaince, Industrial/Modern, Modern/Post-Modern/Information/whatever. Of course, this classification paradigm leans heavily on a European bias; many Asian civilization won't fit this mold, and of course I've left out very important civilizations such as Indus River, Manden, etc.

Yes, this is definitely interesting and something I think was intended. Another cool thing to think about - inverting the map in this way means the Qun come from what is basically Africa/Egypt/Middle East...hey what do you know, Dark Skin colors and a different religion...

Edit: for reference, here is the thread I posted those maps in. I may overlay the new Hi-Res map, since it shows more detail. There are clear differences and blending of cultures in Bioware's Thedas, of course, but it would have been pretty boring if they made it an EXACT replica, don't you think?

Spirits may be the equivalent of angels in their world. But other than that I haven't heard any mention of anything that matches their physical description in the game yet.

Was reading through this thread and saw the OP said something like "If it were called Earth, there'd be mention of England, etc. etc." Are you being sarcastic or just lacking in the imagination department?

There are benevolent spirits (angels) in the Fade. They just don't have as much reason to cross the Veil as the more sinister spirits (demons) do, so there aren't many cases of it happening, hence there isn't much record of it.

One of the game's party members had a run in with one, though.

I figure the name of the planet really depends on one's point of view. I doubt the qunari refer to the world as a whole by the name of Thedas, and they probably have their own name for the continent we know as Thedas, too.

Honestly, I think there's a lot more allegorical value to Andraste than simply Jesus. There also seem to be elements of Muhammad, Joan of Arc, and Boudica in her story, although Boudica wasn't a religious figure. Interestingly, though, Andraste was the name of a Celtic goddess invoked by Boudica at the beginning of her rebellion against the Romans.

Well, there's always Andrastus. Not as funny, but that would probably fit.

The world is called Thedas. And, yes, that is also the continent -- for most of the inhabitants, that IS the world. They don't have a concept of the world like you or I do, like it's a planet. Even the name for our own planet -- Earth -- comes from our word for the ground under our feet, remember.

But if you're looking for a name for the Dragon Age world, in IP fashion? It's Thedas. If there are some other settings that go so far as to give a different name to their planet, that's super.

what if a future dragon age game takes place on a different continent or you travel to a different continent? you cant just not have a name for the planet.

Your are assuming that the people of Thedas have an understanding of what 'continent' means. The world is just 'Thedas' and isn't defined by any modern day geopolitical definitions.
