I love how the dev's built the nations and religions and cultures based on real world things from world history (i.e. medieval Europe)......For instance Ferelden is obviously based on England while the Adnderfells strongly resemble Germany/The Holy Roman Empire with the Grey Wardens filling the role of the Knights Templar or perhaps the Teutonic Order. Highever is loosely based on Scotland/Ireland while Orlais is most definitely an analogue of France/the Normans.

The history and politics of Thedas is loosely based off our world as well. For example the Orlessian invasion of Ferelden could be seen as a parallel to the Norman conquest of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom(s) of England. Also the fact that the King of the Anderfells is weak and that the Wardens have greater power draws parallels with the politics of the Holy Roman Empire in its latter years.
