Garrus: Just all around bad-ass character, he's one of my favourites!

Ash: My Shepard's LI, but she's also wonderfully smart-assed. Also, in ME3, I don't know what it was, but she had the best AI of them all! She outflanked 2 Geth Primes and a rocket trooper while the rest of us were pinned down, and I didn't tell her to do anything! For that alone she gets a spot!

Jack: One of the characters with the most potential, I was a little disappointed that she wasn't a temporary squad mate in ME3. Love her raw biotic abilities, and her "run in guns blazing" style.

Liara: Much more tactical when she uses biotic, but no less deadly than a charging krogan.

Wrex: Just all around bad-ass. And smart-ass. Everyone's favourite lovable krogan!

Legion: I always wanted to know why he used part of Shepard's N7 armor to repair himself. Kinda wish they had explored that a little more.

Finally, I camr to a tie:

Kasumi/Thane: Love the stealth that both of them bring to the table. Kinda like Kasumi's cheerfulness over Thane's stoicism, but they're both pretty good characters, and great in combat.

Honorable mention:

Tali: If the top 7 was based solely on characterization and story, she's a shoe-in. I just didn't use her much in combat.

Garrus, Liara, Tali, Wrex, Kaidan, Legion and Mordin.

Garrus: Really get the feeling this is Shep's "best friend", and leaving him off would be wrong.
Tali: I'd almost rather her take over as lead engineer than as a squadmate
Wrex: Just awesome, end of story
Ashley: I feel a connection to the aliance is important.
Jack: my preferred LI, and had one of the better character arcs in the series.
Thane: Garrus-lite... I feel like this is someone my Shepard would be very close with.
Mordin: Could easily be like Tali- doesn't NEED to be a squadmate, just a Normandy character.

Goddamn it's hard to leave some guys off. Grunt and Liara especially.

I'll be honest, there isn't a character in the series I *don't* like, Jacob and James included, but some are just profound. Tali is someone I'd want to know in real life, Garrus and Thane feel like close personal friends, and Jack... well, I felt the writers did an amazing job with her.

Miranda- ^ cant wait. Alliance Soldier and ex Cerberus ****? Hell yeah!
Wrex- Shepards brother. Love his dialogue in ME3.

Jack- Need this chick. Plus I think she and Ash would chick bond and that would be cool.
Garrus- Shepards bro, love his dialogue in ME3.
Kasumi- So wish she would have been an LI. IMO much better than Tali.

Miranda. She's my fave LI and here genetic perfection is a valuable asset.
Grunt. I really liked both Krogan squad mates but I'll give the edge to Grunt here.
Mordin. Smartest squad member ever plus his chaarcter is rich in depth.
Legion. He's a freaking Geth. Nuff said.
Jack. Badass biotic.
Tali for obvious reasons.
Garrus for obvious reasons.

I just want a squadmate with Warp and Throw. Any biotic character could fill that role reasonably well, though Thane possessed both of those skills in ME2.

So why not:

Ashley - Hard woman to please, good soldier. Most down to Earth, in a ****y untrusting way
Kasumi - Because Why the **** not?

4. Tali. People should continue a romance. Central to the plot.

6. EDI. Central to the plot
7. VS. They are also central to the plot and needed gameplay wise.

I'd love to add Jack, Vega, Kasumi, or Zaeed as well, but none of them seem essential. Jack would've been especially nice.

I only ever used Tali and Garrus, so the squads were fine in all three games for me.

But besides those two, I think I'd rather have a "best representative of each race and faction" as my squadmates.

Krogan:  Grunt.  Wrex is too busy actually leading.

Geth: Legion.

Asari:  Possibly Aria.  Liara's never really been a combatant, and Samara's perspective is too skewed for something of this scale.

Prothean: Javik.  No other option.

and then Shepards the human.

I guess we need a seventh...hmmm..  Malak, or whatever that Batarian bad guy was from Bring Down The Sky.

1) Garrus - he's my bro, yo!

2) Kasumi - second favorite character of the entire series. Her dry wit and amazing combat abilities superglued her to my hip through all of my ME2 playthroughs.

3) Legion - "Geth do not infiltrate." He had the best "inadvertent" humor in the game, as well as some deep conversation.

4) Liara - I couldn't do insanity without her. Also, she's very warm and tender. Like a perfectly cooked piece of veal!

5) Thane - my lizard from another ... errr, gizzard? I like his personality, he's calm and collected and probably the only person in the series that could be considered "at peace".

6) Wrex - it's just not a mass effect game without a Krogan crewmember. Grunt is a close second, but only because of the way he laughs... Heh. Heh. Heh.

7) Tali - one of, if not the most developed characters through the entire series. She's only coming in at #7 because of the 'shopped "reveal". That pissed me off more than the deus ex starchild ending.
