Wrex: My favourite squadmate and usualy has something funny or interesting to say. He's also very useful in combat. Good tank character!

Garrus: Garrus has awesome personality and he's someone I can trust fully. And him having overload and concusion shot is a plus!

Tali: Love her personality and tech abilities. Having a combat droid is fun fun too!

Mordin: Interesting character with a quirky personality and reasoning. I like that. And his incarcinate is cool.

James Vega: I actualy like James's character, he's laidback and has useful abilities in combat.

Samara: I like her stories and experience, her input is always interesting to hear, also her abilities are useful and she's also beautiful which is a side-plus.

Legion: Useful abilities and him being AI really makes him different from the rest in interesting way.

That was easy.

Samara I never really liked much, and Ash can go to hell. She is lucky I didn't shoot her.

That's about it. My FemShep doesn't want or need any males really in any important positions. Yes, she is quite a bit sexist. Virmire was a very easy choice for her.

Garrus: No explanation needed, it wouldn't be Mass Effect without him.
Tali: Same reason as above.

Hmm..these next ones will be a bit more difficult.

Legion: A unique character that gave me a new, completely different perspective on the Geth. He had a lot of great moments...plus, doing combat drone spam in ME2 with Engineer Shep + Tali + Legion was a crapload of fun =P
Mordin: Funny, because I hardly ever took him out on missions...I always imagined him as the ships crazy doctor. He's just...such a well written character. Love his dialogue
Zaeed: "Shepard! I was just waxing goddamn nostalgic...this takes me back.." As well as being tough and hard to take down on the battlefield, he has some of the funniest dialogue in ME2. The most memorable would probably be with the volus "Biotic God": "Shepard, want me to cap his knee's so he stops following us around?"
Wrex/Grunt: Cause we need a krogan.
Kal'Reegar: Its Adam Baldwin for gods sake!

My seven:

Garrus: Everyone knows he's awesome.
Tali: She's my favorite character, and like Garrus she's been there with you since the beginning.
Javik: I really thought his character was really well done and his interactions with the crew were great.
EDI: Out of the newer squadmates, I thought she was the most interesting.
Vega: I actually liked this guy. He was young and inexperienced, and was a nice contrast to the rest of your squad at this point.
Liara: She's a bit too central to the story to remove, I think.
Kasumi: She was probably my favorite ME2 squadmate, but this last one's pretty hard, as ME2 had a lot of great options. I feel like there should have been at least one to join you from ME2.

In the end, I would have left the last squad mate up to the player, though. Give Shepard a choice between the Virmire Survivor or any of the crew from ME2, if they survived. Star Ocean 2 did something like this, where you couldn't recruit every character on a single playthrough, and I always liked that. It made replays more interesting.

Edit: And since I see a lot of people added Kal'Reegar...yes. Please. Kal'Reegar's part in ME2 was far too small, and I felt like they could have done a lot more with him. The email death was just insulting.

1- Wrex = I always liked him, he was always on my squad in ME1
2- Garrus = He's my Bro, didn't always take him on a mission but he was there when I needed him.
3- Grunt = Can never have enough Krogan's on your team
4- Liara = Biotics FTW and she's a Bro too
5- Legion = Do I need to explain?
6- Tali = Love her like a sister and her combat-drones when we're under fire
7- Jack = Badass biotic b**ch that never took **** from anyone, including me. She was always there to speak her mind and keep my on my toes.

7 was hard as I like Javik, Miranda, Mordin, Thane, Zaeed, and Samara. I never used Mordin on missions but I loved to talk to him on ship.

Note, my LI didn't even make the list, I'd keep him in my cabin.

Garrus: Obvious. Always number one in my squad choice.
Liara: Just because I like her.
Thane: Cuz he is an awesome written character.
Miranda: I think she should have been there instead of Tali or EDI in ME3.

These are my favorite characters in the series, don't know who else to pick... well, I guess I can pick these:

Grunt: he isn't my favorite or so, but I think it would be good with a krogan in the squad.
Ashley: I don't really like her, but do not dislike her either. But a pure soldier would do good.
Wrex: Shepard.

Liara - Awkward at times, yet kinda badass. An overall interesting and enjoyable character.

Garrus - Awkward and even a bit naive, yet a total badass. A very entertaining character, kind of the same reasons I like Liara.

Mordin - You seldom see a Salarian badass. Has interesting moral issues, seems quite unemotional, yet expresses emotions when needed.

Legion - The definition of interesting. Completely changed the perspective I had on the Geth.

Javik - Total unemotional badass, yet very interesting considering the usual view on Protheans.

EDI - Interesting AI attempting to be more human, kind of the same reasons I like Legion.

James Vega - Never though I'd say this, but I was pleasantly surprised by him. He had fun dialogue scenes (particularly with Javik) and was more interesting than I had thought, and a bonus was that he wasn't shoved into being a LI despite his obvious sexual appeal. Definitely the best of the generic soldier-esque characters.

And one last thing, which applies to all the characters I chose and is a reason why I chose them in particular; they all have absolutely fantastic voice actors.

Additional Crew, 'cause you can't do this without them;
Joker, Chakwas, EDI, Cortez, Adams, Ken, Gabby and Samantha, with Kelly providing on-the-ground support (and maybe some seriously-needed therapy for Javik).

My actual party would be pretty much Garrus and Javik, all the time, but I like to have Grunt where I can keep an eye on him. Makes me feel like a responsible Battlemaster. Everyone else is just there to hang out with.

I would pick mine for their banter and not their skills. The game would likely be more difficult (and possibly impossible on Insanity), but when I heard Vega trying to be funny at Citadel II (trying is the keyword), I find it difficult to avoid taking him for that mission now.

Kaidan: Ain't going nowhere without my LI
Ash: A squad with Kaidan and Ash would be gold. It isn't possible but it's a dream team
Jacob: Another fav LI of mine. Have always thought that he would go well with Kaidan and Ash
Jack: Because she is so much fun, and a girl team with her and Asn and FemShep = win
Garrus: He was just wonderful in ME3, need to have him along
Mordin: To keep everyone up and running, and we need some extra tech for those times I'm not playing engineer

Yo! The OP wants your reasons for each squadmate and not just a list of them.

Jack: my favorite character in Mass Effect. Love her arc, her attitude and voice acting. She's a badass brawler and that fits my play style.

Garrus: he's Garrus. Understands the "ruthless calculus" of war, and never really gets all preachy or judgmental on Shep. He's always got Shep's back, and that's who you want in a foxhole.

Miranda: Cold, ruthless, but she gets things done. I was a huge fan ever since she point-blank executed whatsisname at the start of ME2. She doesn't really flinch in the face of touch decisions and she's one hell of a biotic. Oh, and that accent.

Grunt: One-man wrecking machine. I love Grunt. Wrex is great too, but I honestly think I'm coming down on the side of Grunt a little more. He's just so ... GLEEFUL ... when the carnage starts.

Liara: I think Liara is really sweet, and she's kind of the heart of Mass Effect. I can't imagine NOT having her on the team. I also liked the badass she turned into in ME2.

Zaeed: Honestly, it took A LONG time for Zaeed to grow on me. The more I played ME2, though, I loved his ruthless attitude. A true gun-for-hire, he knows what needs to be done in order to succeed.

Tali: Never was a Talimancer, but she's such a sweet kid and a good techie. I like having her around.
