I honestly don't ever care what type of skills they use, I always take em along just for the fact I like their characters, and wanna hear the banter :| Game is nowhere near as hard as ME2 either on insane so it especially wasn't a big deal who I bring with in this game.

Hmm. It's really tough to get it down to 7, especially if you want some human companions!

Tali: Always going to be my LI, plus she's interesting, funny and has useful skills
Garrus: Funny, interesting and a top sniper
Liara: She's resourceful and I always loved the singularity power.
Wrex: Like many have said, he's badass and a Krogan with biotics is pretty useful.
Legion: A very interesting character, useful skills (if similar to Tali's) and another top sniper.
Mordin: Just a huge amount of fun and provides contrasting skills.
Kasumi: Just love the sense of humor. She also has contrasting skills and is my token human.

It is though though, I'd give honorable mention to Jack, Samara, Thane, Miranda, Grunt and Ash. All of which I considered for for the 7th spot before going for Kasumi.

I am thinking here about plot roles and different kinds of missions as well as general squad functionality.

EDIT: Actually I notice I seeem to have prioritised comedy value. Should probably have included Javik instead of Liara then. Although without Liara Javik probably wouldn't be quite as entertaining.

Garrus - Paragon brofist and brohug, bff's for life.
Tali - Adorable, essential against synthetics and a master of emergency induction ports.
Legion - the insight into the geth and the old machines alone makes him worth it.
Kasumi - overload and ninja punch? Hell yes.
Anderson - I think you should be able to leave behind kaiden/ashley to organize Earth and take Anderson with you. An interesting student/mentor situation could occur.
EDI - Name a better option for solving on the fly reaper hacks?

My dream team you say? Challenge Accepted. Although I'm going with 8 squadmates because I need an even number.

1. Garrus Vakarian - My favorite squad mate of the trilogy. He's always had your back through thick and thin and is Shepard's best friend. He's hilarious, badass, and the best damn marksmen in the galaxy. Plus his assualt rifle/ sniper combo with the perfect blend of Tech and Soldier powers is amazing. Plus for me, there is no Shepard without Vakarian. He's Garrus Vakarian and is my favorite squadmate on the Citadel

2. Urdnot Wrex - The most badass Krogan in the Galaxy. Nearly tied with Garrus as my all time favorite squad mate. He gave the depth the Krogan people needed for me to care about them. He says the perfect hilarious things in every situation. Everything he does is badass and He''s the King of Clan Urdnot. Plus Biotics + Krogan = Win. HE IS URDNOT WREX AND THIS IS HIS PLANET!

3. Liara T'Soni - She has been my LI from ME1 and I love her character. Her character has gone through the most growth over the series and really came into her own in LotSB and ME3. Plus she cares about Shepard more than anyone. She goes the distance and risks her life on the chance it could bring Shepard back. That's love right there. Her biotic abilities are awesome and she's gorgeous and being ME3 she's a cutthroat with her enemies. Have you ever faced Liara and lived? Few have.

4. Tali - She has been with you through thick and thin all three games. Her loyalty to you is unwavering and her and Garrus are a must on the Normandy as my go to team. Her hacking abilities are unmatched and her Shotgun always comes in handy. She's also my part time LI because I love her romance.

5. Legion - He gave the Geth depth and insight into their culture and way of thinking. He is incredibly interesting and an easily lovable character. He is one of the most compelling characters in video games for me. His sniping skills with the widow are amazing and I love his tech powers. Plus his fascination with Shepard is always entertaining. Plus....There was a hole...

6. Mordin - The very model of a scientist Salarian is the coolest Salarian in the galaxy. His redemption story with the genophage was one of my favorite stories in video gaming. His personality and conscience made him relatable and more human. His singing and comments were always hilarious and gave him a special place in my heart.

7. Javik - The first real look we got of the Protheans. I completely loved his character. He wasn't what I was expecting from a Prothean at all but after talking to him it makes complete sense that he is the way he is. If all he's know is war and death, of course he has a pessimistic very on everything. Everything he said was amazingly well written and his dry sarcastic humor was hilarious and I love that Biotic tank.

8. Kasumi - Even as a DLC character she was utterly hilarious. Everything she said was awesome and her Shadow strike was one of the best powers in ME2. The greybox was a great addition to the story and I love her character so much. The galaxy's best thief couldn't be more awesome.

Honorable Mentions:

Jack: It is almost a tie between her and Kasumi. Kasumi won because she had better powers. Jack's story always intrigued me and I love that biotic tank

Grunt: If I couldn't have Wrex he'd take his spot. Grunt is a complete badass and I love being his Battlemaster plus HE IS KROGAN!!

Thane: The galaxy's greatest assassin has always been one of my favorites. If he didn't have Kepral Syndrome I'd switch out Javik for him in a few playthroughs.

Liara - My LI for all but two of my play throughs. I adore the character, her story arc and her romance arc.
Garrus - Garrus is my Shepard's Brother from another mother, and absolute best friend in the Galaxy. There is no Shepard without Vakarian. Period.
Tali - My Shepard's little sister. It wouldn't really be the Normandy without Tali. Also, she has a shotgun.
Wrex - Wrex is my Shepard's other Brother from another mother. Watching him and Garrus try to out badass each other is always fun, and in many ways, he's one of the wisest members of the team.
Grunt - My Shepard's adopted teenage son. HE. IS. KROGAN. Also, he's just adorable and awesome.
Legion - Legion's one of my favorite characters in the series. Right up there with Garrus, though Garrus of course takes the top spot. His story arc, from the moment he first appears on the Derelict Reaper, all the way up to the moment he dies is one of my favorites in the game. I especially loved the small glimpse you get into his past inside the Consensus, when you see one of the Geth that make up Legion first pick up a Widow to defend other, weaker platforms.
Kasumi - Oh, Kasumi. She just wormed her way into my heart during ME2. Her and Garrus are my go to team. Witty, funny and slightly tragic. Probably the only one I could see my FemSheps going to for some 'girl time'. Also, Shadow Step... Seriously OP.
