This came up pre-ME2 among squad speculation and I still think this would have been great but it's a much better fit in ME3. Saravok in Throne of Bhaal was awesome and it could work along those lines.

In no particular order: Tali, Wrex, Kal'reeger, Garrus, Kasumi, Liara and Jack. Well, ME3 Jack. I'm lukewarm to ME2 Jack. Honorable mentions are: Aethyta, Feron, Legion, EDI, Mordin, Aria, James and Batman.

...What?

Harbinger: Your species is wholly inferior, organic. We impose order through destruction.
Batman: I'm Batman...
Harbinger: What makes you think your species has a hope, organic?
Batman: BECAUSE I'M BATMAN.

Batman was subsequently torn apart by Husks.

Husks fight within melee range. Batman would destroy them. Now the other huskified races, not so much.;)

The Sweet Seven in terms of balance & effectiveness would be:

-- Wrex: Tank + decent weapons + Biotics + Kick @ss attitude == win

-- Liara: A little nerdy + good Biotic + lots of knowledge and connections == win

-- Legion: Heavy Sniper Rifle + good engineering skills + more time to get past the "no data available" non-answer

-- Kasumi: Everyone needs a good thief + Cloak + hot Asian chick is a win

-- Mordin: Gotta have a scientist that makes sure he doesn't get it wrong. Plus way too funny to leave off the list

-- Garrus: Good choice of weapons + Overload + one of the few to really stick by Shep in each game. Don't forget the "bro" factor.

-- Miranda: With some of the best utility skills / buffs in the game I'd be silly to leave the Cerberus cheearleader behind. Also how could I not give BW the chance to make some of the shots / camera angles that BW / Miranda is famous for

***************************************

If balance or effectiveness didn't matter I'd just have my favorites so I'd dump Miranda, Kasumi, and add in Tali & whoever has the best squad banter / is easy to bait [maybe Ash??]

My thoughts aren't so much who would make the most badass team, but who I would want to spend time with.

Liara: no brainer
Tali: no brainer
Garrus: no brainer
Miranda: She's probably the closest thing to what I would consider a second in command. If I had to leave someone in charge, she would be my choice.
Mordin: too much fun to have around.
Wrex: gotta have a Krogan, and he edges out Grunt in terms of who I'd rather spend time with.
Thane: Simply awesome.

Didn't quite make the list:
Jack
Grunt
Legion
EDI

Garrus - Shepard's closest alli and pretty good with a sniper rifle. Probably the best character to have your back.
Tali - She is interesting and endearing IMO, best LI as well.  Also nice to have if you aren't playing a tech class.
Liara - The only pure biotic out of all three games make her very useful. I like her personality as well (more so in ME1 than in 2 and 3).
Legion - Wish I had more time with him as a squadmate.  His interactions are very interesting and "overclocking kinetic barriers" always makes me smile.
Grunt - Very loyal and a beast to have in close combat.  Can take and recieve a lot of damage.
Zaeed - I didn't think I would like him, but he has a cool backstory, cool accent, and Inferno Grenade is a room-clearer.  I almost always take him with me in ME2
EDI - I like her character, her tech abilities are also fairly useful.  Don't use her very often, but all the the other characters are far behind the ones on this list.

Liara: Pretty easy to see why
Garrus: Best friend outside of Liara
Wrex: Come on, do you really need an explanation?
Ashley: She is just badass with a gun. period.
Tali: Her tech abilities are awesome
Thane: He is the best hand to hand specialist for close quarters battles
Jack: Just. plain. crazy

Hm, good question! The fact that this is such a hard question (well, for me) is a testament to the truly wonderful cast of characters we've been able to enjoy through this series.

  • Liara, of course. Awesome biotics, intelligence analysis, and expert knowledge are critical to mission success, though my Shepard is more concerned about the, ah, morale boost her presence provides.
  • And Garrus, for all the usual reasons. He and Liara were my squadmates of choice from the beginning, and they remained as such through ME3.
  • Wrex, I need the moral support. Plus, he and future Primarch Vakarian will get the opportunity to solidify a friendship that the two leaders are going to lean heavily in the coming decades.
  • Mordin, definitely. Great character, and I think it's a good idea to have a science officer on board for any contingency.
  • Tali. If Joker says the Normandy doesn't operate as well without her, well, we can't have that.
  • Miranda. She gets the nod over many others because I don't think she got nearly enough attention in ME3, and I'd love to see that story fleshed out on board the Normandy. Plus, I need her back in the XO position.
  • Grunt. I want to take him and Wrex on missions and have the two yelling at Shepard the whole time.

Grunt: He's badass.
Legion: They are badass.
Miranda: Excellent combat balance and when bored you can look at her ass.
Garrus: Another one excellently balanced in combat in his ME3 form. Also he amuses me.
Samara: She brings cleavage and decent biotics if I need some powers Miranda doesn't have.
Kasumi: She amuses me and has pretty good tech powers.
Zaeed: He's badass too and requires no further explanation.

They are the only ones I even wanted on my squad in ME3, well Wrex and Thane too but I was pretty sure I wouldn't get them for story reasons.

1- Jack: Not much good in a fight, but I almost always brought her along in ME2 because most of her dialogue makes me laugh. Not sure why, but lines like "I knew I smelled murder on that *****" still amuse me even after hearing them on multiple playthroughs.

2-Kasumi: I like her abilities and personality. As such she was a frequent party member in ME 2.

3-Tali: Not so useful in a fight, but she's one of my favorite characters.

4-Mordin: Great character and has incinerate.

5-Samara: Mostly because I like her as a character but also because Reave was great for burning through enemy armor.

6-Wrex or Grunt: Every ME game should have a Krogan.

7-Legion: An awesome character. Completely changed our views on the geth.

Runners up:

Garrus: Didn't like him much in ME1 and never brought him along on missions, but he's grown on me a lot over the course of the series.

Zaeed: I love his voice. I've thought it was awesome ever since I first saw Robin Sachs in Babylon 5. Still, I've never used him enough to warrant a spot in the top seven. That said, I would much rather have had him in ME 3 than Vega or the VS.

Liara: I think Liara is a cute character, and I get why people like her, but for some reason I've never been that into her and never used her as a squadmate except when necessary.

EDI: I do really like EDI, but she works perfectly well as the ship, and as such, I would rather give her slot to someone else.

Miranda: Miranda is useful in a fight (and carries a number of aesthetic benefits), but she's never really ranked high enough with me to make it to the top seven. As with Zaeed, I would much rather have had her as a squadmate than the VS or Vega.

Garrus - One of my favorite characters and his sharp shooting comes in handy.

Tali - Another awesome personality and her electronic skills are a huge asset.

Liara - She's a great character and setting up biotic combos with my Adept is a ton of fun.

Jack - I love her attitude and see the above about biotic combos.

Kasumi - She's probably my favorite human character and has some pretty unique skills.

Thane - I know it's impossible in ME3, but this is a dream team right?

Legion - See above about Thane.  I'd take Legion for as long as they'd let me have him.

Alternates - after Thane and Legion sacrifice themselves, I'd probably sub in Wrex and Miranda.

the number should be 6 squadmates. 1 character for each class.

having said that i envision my eleitest possible squad as being with grunt and legion. everyone else is second hand soldier compared to those two supreme beings.

Liara - I feel like she's the most emotionally deep character, and she has great dialogue even if she's not a love interest.

Tali - I love her character arc from naive youth to admiral of the migrant fleet. She's so strong willed and selfless you just have to respect her, and her LI dialogue is my personal favorite.

Garrus - No real surprises here. Shepard's surest and best friend throughout the entire series. No matter what happens, you can always count on Garrus being there to support you.

Kasumi - My only regret is that she's DLC and can't be a love interest =(. I love her quirky personality and humor, even if her character isn't all that deep compared to the rest. It'd be nice to get to know her better.  (She's also way hotter than Miranda ^_^)

Mordin - Because he's goddamn Mordin. Nobody else is as hilarious, smart, or hyper. His character is very well written - you can tell he's struggling with a deep inner conflict, but he always puts on a tough face and tries to hide it. Oh, he also sings.

Wrex - You will never find a (male) krogan that cares more about his people's future than Wrex. He defies the stereotype that the krogan are nothing more than mindless, killing-machine, savages. He's not a character that hops on the friend train right off the bat, but one with which you build a deep sense of friendhip and respect over the entire course of the series.

Legion - He puts a sympathetic face on what you previously thought were nothing but cold, heartless machines. He expresses characteristics that you wouldn't expect from a robot - trust, empathy, shame. Out of all of the characters, he's the one that can most influence your opinion on an entire race of sentient beings. Also, he's a Shepard cosplayer.

Hmm, I'll pick who I want to both pop domes with and get wasted with.

-Liara: Hello, have you seen my avatar? She's so cute.

-Tali: Emergency induction port + shotgun = win.

-Wrex: I love his sardonic approach to life. Reminds me of me.

-Garrus: Henceforth, let it be decreed that thee be no Shepard without Vakarian.

-Shiala: I wonder if the bonding is any different with a green asari.

-Blasto: This one humbly requests that the intergalactic scum surrender to avoid being blasted into tiny bits.

-Mordin: I am the very model of a scientist salarian.

Easy

1.Garrus (Best character in ME in my opinion)
2. Ashley (Always was a fan of Ash and her poetry)
3. Tali (the 2nd best character in ME in my opinion)
4. Liara (Why explain?)
5. Wrex ("Shepard")
6. Legion (General Bad-assness)
7. Toss up between EDI and Mordin (Love their comedic element)

Garrus - he's the man, er, Turian. Plus he's got reach and flexibility.
Miranda - she's my main Shepard's LI, plus she is a great leader who I think compliments Shepard nicely.
Liara - she's my second Shepard's LI and my main's original flame. Plus, she's the freakin' Shadow Broker.
Tali - Everyone's favorite Quarian engineer and one of my favorite characters. Goes through a lot of growth and has a complicated relationship with Miranda (doesn't get along but secretly admires).
Jack - Every team needs a loose cannon.
VS - in my case, Ashley, but if I played through again I might take Kaiden so I could get to know him.
Grunt - Because I love, Wrex but he has a whole planet to run and Grunt is like Shepard's overly strong, slightly out-of-control nephew that Wrex said to take care of. <3 Grunt!

To me, EDI having a body was OKAY, but I didn't take her on any missions. The only reason I liked her having a body was that it seemed to make Joker happy. Javick, despite many people who seem to love him, mostly bored me. He had some good lines, but I found him kind of predictable and simple. I actually loved Vega - though, I didn't take him anywhere. His dialogue with Garrus and Cortez was top notch, so I would want him on the ship somewhere for sure.

Almost forgot Allers, because her character was less memorable than Jacob T.T

I'll get the obvious ones out of the way first:

Garrus: "There is no Shepard without Vakarian". I take him on 90% of my missions. If I ever catch him with an assault rifle in his hands I make him quick switch to the sniper rifle and know that there isn't much getting close.

Tali: She is the BEST force multiplier in the game in my opinion. While not overly strong in combat her abilities literally increase your squad from 3 people to 4. She like a little sister to Shep.

Jack: I would actually bet on her and Samara would be a good fight. Jack versus Liara would just end badly for Liara.

James Vega: Best NON-biotic tank in the game. I like his attitude and dialogue.

Ash: I've liked Ash since ME1, She has a better Spray and pray capability than Garrus and better long range ability that Vega. If I'm force to take certian people on missions (EDI, Liara, etc..) I usually take her as the third member.

EDI: Why? Because she's EDI. What other reason is needed?

#7: Pretty much anyone else would work for me. The only exceptions would be Liara or Samara. Samara is a good character but I there are others I would rather have. Liara on the other hand, I just have never liked the character. Everyone else can have their blue babies but I'll stick with human babies or ones running around in bubbles :)
