1. how much does that cost since you lose money on the deal?
2. can anyone confirm that the armor comes at any level higher then 3 on the PC? Or is that the default level no matter how high the character is?

You do lose quite a bit of money in the deal, but it doesn't bother me since full warden armor on Alistair is amazing (better than almost everything else I could find in the game). And he looks awesome in it too (along with the warden helmet). Well worth the 30-40 gold I lost in the deal.

- selling them
- quicksaving
- quickload
- buy them back.
Note that it's still random a what tier the merchant sells them. So if it's not tier 7, just re-load again (unless you want a lower tier for some reason, of course). Oh, and just fo clarification: This works with all 3 pieces - armor, gloves and boots.

Can I just take this opportunity to SCREAM about scaling gear, and that while I don't understand but will tolerate scaling in a game for encounters, I do NOT at all like when my gear is gimped out because I was able to beat an area earlier than intended. Especially unique gear that is supposed to be legendary and used to end game.
Note to BioWare, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM MAKING UNIQUE ITEM DROPS SCALE TO LEVEL. Its fine for common items to be steel in the beginning and dragonbone at level 20+ (though beware, see Oblivion and Glass Armor Bandits), but my Legendary Unqiue Sword of End Game Boss Slaying should not be gimped to level 4 because I got it then, but if I had waited until later to do that area I'd have a much better sword.
What's worse, some items ARE scaled and some AREN'T but there is no rhyme or reason for it, it seems. Consistency would be nice. So would not having to "cheat" by vendors to get the items to the level you want.
BTW, the PS3 version I found the chest doesn't work, I have to use Mikhail.

Mikhail in Warden's Keep does work though - I upgraded my Warden Commander suit to Dragonbone at level 14.
It costs money. A LOT of money. You can cheat yourself some gold (exactly as much as it takes to buy the suit back) and in the end it'll be a zero sum game, or you can pretend that you are paying Mikhail to upgrade it for you, and pay with the cash you actually make in-game.

Nah. I sold mine to the guy in my camp when it was Steel (Tier 3) and made a few coins, left the area, came back and bought the Dragonbone (Tier 7) pieces for less than 25g. All of the DLC items are super cheap compared to what they should cost.

I think the larger problem with scaling items is that they made some scale and some not. Another problem is that so few unique items drop that if you pick the wrong area order you could potentially get all of the gear for a mage/tank/rogue too early. Luckily there are some pretty good items for sale on vendors and you should have no problem gearing a party to beat the game. It is no doubt very frustrating if you are trying to get the very best items for your entire party or even just the PC.

So basically any "red" equipment you get early in the game is gimped and there no way to avoid it since doing side quests only get you so far in levels. It's not like we can go kill rats till we reach level 20 and then start doing main quests. I also just found out PC users don't get the elven helmet....remember when RPG's where better on the PC then the console????

I don't think item scaling is designed to "gimp" rewards from beating things early. I think it is designed to scale the loot with the encounter. The idea is that if you do area A first and get armor A it will be level A, then if you do area B second you will face level B encounters and get B armor.

It is not desinged to "gimp" rewards but it does that in practice, sadly. The simplest solution is to have magical unique items that you get early level up with you. In non scaling games, you wouldn't get this gear early because the monsters would be too powerful for you to beat.
If an item is legendary and magical, it should unlock its secrets to a more powerful wielder and get stronger as the wielder/wearer does. No issues with this and it solves the problems of doing a quest too early making you out end game loot.
Its just POORLY done in vanilla DA I think, and should be fixed with a patch. I hate item scaling
An item in DA:O has not one, not two, but 3 methods of item scaling:
1) An item may drop as IS, and never change from how it is no matter when you find it. EG, go to the woods, kill a revenant, get a juggernaught piece that is silverite even though you're level 5 and don't have the strength to wear it.
2) An item drops and is appropriate to your level when you find it, but you can sell it to a merchant and buy it back at a higher tier.
3) An item drops and is approriate to your level but cannot be brought up to your level (all helms are like this AFAIK).
What idiot designer made it this way and what were they thinking? Is it a bug? Method #1 SHOULD BE in place for all magical items IMHO. But that's just me.

that's great so the chest only works on consoles

They get the helmet but not the boots (and possibly no gloves, not sure re that one).
