Why are mics so rarely used?

I don't understand why so few players use mics. It makes the game so much more fun and feel more like a cooperative game.

Commonly, I'll enter a game and give a quick "Hey guys!" without a reply. This usually continues in the game, although some players start talking once I start. :)

This seems less of an issue on gold (where most people know what they are doing) or bronze (where four good individuals will still win without tactics) but on silver....

Most of the times, it feels like I'm playing with AI bots. :(

Mics make the game so much more enjoyable and a LOT easier, too. For instance, you will...

... not find four players running around the map like headless chicken
... won't be surprised from centurions/ geth hunters from behind if somebody gives you a warning
... can be aware/ make others aware of tough enemies to take them out quickly by focus-firing
... might get to know other players
... will develop a team- cohesion
... avoid running into a death trap by desperatly trying to revive a swarmed squad mate
... take out guardians very easily by one playing acting as decoy or the sniper guy asking the other players not
to shoot the shield so the sniper can actually hit the mail slot more easily
.......

So what's the reason people don't use mics?

- If you are shy: just start talking. Nobody judges you, nodoby sees you. Easy :)
- If you talk to somebody in your room and just play casually: Just let your fellow players know or switch the mic off
for private talks and quickly on for squad talks (it can be a second or two here and there to make a difference)
- If you think your accent/ language is too poor: who cares? You'll actually get better by trying, and accents (I've got
one, too) are part of the Mass Effect universe.

Any other ideas? :(

I don't have a headset mic, and Mass Effect doesn't pick up me talking unless I have my mic almost touching my mouth. It's just too much of a hassle for me to use it mid game.

If somebody specifically is asking me something, I'll respond, but that's about it.

I can't say. I'm really disappointed in the ME3 online community for this reason alone.

I don't have one yet, I do for my ps3 but I play ME on pc. I'm getting one soon though. Turtle Beach is releasing the Ear Force z11 on April 13th.

They still should add text chat to pc though.

Keep in mind ME is a single player game primarily.

Some people might not even be wearing headsets. It's not like CoD where everyone plays multiplayer and thus uses headsets.

I was that way two days ago. Until I realized that having a girl on your team in multiplayer is so rare, that the boys don't care what I sound like xD

Have a mic, it does not work to well on PC. I have to pick it up off the desk and shout into it and then people barely hear me. Most people I know say same thing....PC mic is broke for most.

There are a bunch of issues with mics on PC. No one could hear my mic until I spent a good 15 minutes fiddling with settings while my friends and I were sitting in the lobby. I also have an issue where a friend and I can't hear each other because our mics show up red to one another. But our other friends can hear us, we just can't hear each other. Really weird.

Otherwise, I hate talking to dead air so I usually don't speak in matches unless someone is saying something. And even then, it has to be worth responding to.

Yep, in a nutshell - but not due to people ingame, if fact I'd enjoy talking.

But because it's weird if someone (in RL) hears you speaking at a computer screen, when you're on your own...

I always have a mic on....I'm just usually in Party Chat.

And ME3 MP is just Horde Mode, so chat isn't really required to play.  It's bare-bones basics.

The game lies. I have no mic. Haven't had that many troubles without it either.

I only talk with friends in party chat in any Multiplayer game I play. Got tired of trash talkers, haters, and ragers who scream at you when you don't play the way they want you to.

I actually do have a decent headset with mic but I haven't used it even once. One of the reasons is that, yes, I am quite shy among people I don't know and the second is that - even though my english has always been very good - I'm afraid that I might say something stupid (have a bad(?) habit of saying "geez" everytime a brute or banshee manages to sneak up on me). Just don't want to sound like an idiot. :)

I have one, it came with my Xbox. however for some reason, every time I use it, people tell me they can barely hear me. I have the mic in front of my mouth as it is supposed to be, yet I still have to almost yell into it. So I stopped using it.

Ah well, not really needed unless in gold. Even then with a decent comp/team: don't need it anyways.

Last person I heard use mic on PC was some kid that was swearing, using racial slurs, and vomiting the word 'brah' every sentence. WTB ability to mute people.

Well, online gaming is notorious for the kind of douchbaggery that only appear in the nightmares of civilized people. Between people that take games way too seriously (coming from someone that regularly posts on an online forum regarding video games that says something) and people that are just naturally the worst kind of people known to man, it is just easier to not use a mic than put up with the kind of filth that populates like 90% of Xbox Live. I swear when Modern Warfare 2 banned the use of Xbox Live parties in ranked matches they opened Pandora's Box of human interaction. More racial slurs and homophobic statements were used in the period of a weekend than in the Southern United States in the last century.

Blame the social networking revolution. More and more people are text messaging, instant messaging, posting status updates about meaningless things, etc.

To any of you that used Xbox Live when it first launched back in 2002, do you remember when nearly every person back then used a mic?

I don't like to talk so even if I have a mic you won't hear me say anything, and since I have Kinect the "mic symbol" is blue in the lobby so everyone thinks that I have a mic plunged in.

But do listen to what the other people say to me, but I don't answer them.

Also it may be because i never do Gold rounds willingly but in almost all random matches I've played so far mics haven't been necessary, as long as you do your part, Reviving downed teammates, go for the objectives/protect those who are going for it. You don't really need more than that

in other games i love to talk with people and have discussions or have pointless conversations screwing about or messing with the rare female player, but with mass effect for some reason i won't, prolly the lack off a excisting frendlist on origin:P

as i never rly liked to add some random person i don't know and none of my rl frends play so i just play with randoms, and if i start talking in those kind of games i would start rly quick voicing my frustrations when things get dire, anoying everyone else in the process.
