Why are mics so rarely used?

For me, at times, it's because I can be shy when I'm talking over the mic, so I hold radio-silence.

The only times that I do break radio-silence is when a person doesn't realize that they're not standing in the upload-data ring, or to say "10/15 seconds, get to the LZ"

first match that some said that to me it scared the bejezus out off me as the whole match was dead silent, and he suddenly yelled it out :crying:

Two headsets, a bluetooth mic and a normal mic.

On the PS3 I'm always on but I mute myself unless its on Gold/playing with friends. On the PC no one talks.

There are alot of reasons. For xbox it may be because people are in party chat.

Personally, I don't talk in multiplayer. Its too easy, bronze to silver that is for communication to even be necessary, for Gold, if everyone is usually doing what their doing and covering potential flanks, you might not need to chat with others anyway unless you need to communicate an enemy posistion.

Actually quite many PC users talk. I guess I just have to find some courage to open my mouth, as well. :)

I haven't ran into anyone that talks on the PC.  And its also push to talk like vent so you don't get a lot of just chatter.  Would be nice since I'm going to move into pug golds looking for good people to play with on the PC, since I gave up on the PS3 version with its "limitations."

This.

Xbox live is pretty much thee most unsociable place to meet new players you would like to play with since they are all in Party Chat.  So you never get to know most people that you play with.

I think part of the problem is that people on xbox live are antisocial, cuz no one talks at all. I've noticed that when girls game they don't speak if guys are talking for fear of ridicule, insults, stalkers, and the desperate. I don't care if you're male or female, black white or polka dotted, young or old, or even if you're good at the game, just talk. Even if it's to tell me to shut the expletive deleted up.

Last ones I played with were actually a pack of 3 girls, who during the game talked about their mice and giggled a lot.

I private or party chat with friends on xbox live when I can. The public stuff is just awful though.

We did have a bit of fun in public chat a few times. One time some Americans promised to bomb our country. That was the best. I'm still waiting for that to happen, by the way.

I don't understand why so few players use mics. It makes the game so much more fun and feel more like a cooperative game.

Commonly, I'll enter a game and give a quick "Hey guys!" without a reply. This usually continues in the game, although some players start talking once I start. :)

This seems less of an issue on gold (where most people know what they are doing) or bronze (where four good individuals will still win without tactics) but on silver....

Most of the times, it feels like I'm playing with AI bots. :(

Mics make the game so much more enjoyable and a LOT easier, too. For instance, you will...

... not find four players running around the map like headless chicken
... won't be surprised from centurions/ geth hunters from behind if somebody gives you a warning
... can be aware/ make others aware of tough enemies to take them out quickly by focus-firing
... might get to know other players
... will develop a team- cohesion
... avoid running into a death trap by desperatly trying to revive a swarmed squad mate
... take out guardians very easily by one playing acting as decoy or the sniper guy asking the other players not
to shoot the shield so the sniper can actually hit the mail slot more easily
.......

So what's the reason people don't use mics?

- If you are shy: just start talking. Nobody judges you, nodoby sees you. Easy :)
- If you talk to somebody in your room and just play casually: Just let your fellow players know or switch the mic off
for private talks and quickly on for squad talks (it can be a second or two here and there to make a difference)
- If you think your accent/ language is too poor: who cares? You'll actually get better by trying, and accents (I've got
one, too) are part of the Mass Effect universe.

Any other ideas? :(

I don't know about others, but multiplayer screws up my mic constantly.

I check using sound recorder; it works perfectly. I load the game, select the mic I'm using. Wont pick up sound.

Between that and the disconnects when the host leaves.

..and not sending me to the right map/enemy that I picked..

Basically multiplayer has problems.

You probably own something that's plugged into your computer giving off that you own a Mic.  My BlackWidow is plugged into the MIC port on the PC and its giving the impression that I have a mic actually plugged in, when in fact I dont.

Yes you meet a lot of stupid/raciest people online but its refreshing once in awhile getting to known a person that's like minded and going for the same goal as you.  But that's very rare as in most games males are very "hardcore alpha dogs" with testosterone levels through the "roof"

The voice chat, at least on PC, doesn't seem to work very well for me. Its usually pretty laggy and hard to understand the other person. I prefer using vent/mumble =]

People use their mics on ps3 from time to time. I usually do talk as long as someone else has a mic. But it's pretty much a must one gold to use a mic.

My best groups are always people added to my friendslist specifically because the DO use mics.

I don't like talking, and I'd generally rather listen to a podcast than the game.

Plus I don't play gold. You don't need a mic at all in bronze, and can usually handle silver fine without it.

More importantly, why is there no mute function for those cases where people do use them?

I wear a mic headset... but I usually switch it off and only talk on XBL if the other players are having a chat.

As for strategy... on Bronze it hardly matters too much... Silver? maybe a bit. but its okay if the squadmates all know what they're doing anyway.

Besides, the only thing that comes out of me if nobody else is talking will only be me yelling "screaming B***h" at Banshees while they go right up in my face. which can get annoying considering the amount of them in Silver matches. :P OK and maybe the occasional "Whoever, Brute behind you." when i'm dead.

I'm shy, and therefore will usually only talk if someone else is. In the event that nobody is talking,  occasionally I'll say thanks for the revive but otherwise? Will stay quiet unless I see that we're being flanked, and or a phantom is stalking someone. I also tend to drop the b bomb every time something takes me out, tries to kill me or when I get overwhealmed by enemies (not directed at anyone but myself, mind you). Not sure how many people would appreciate someone swearing like a sailor, so I tend to stay quiet.

On the occasions that I do use my mic, those games have been pretty darn fun.

The best games I have had were truly co-op with good communication. Not always necessary but I strongly prefer good teamwork. So please speak up! If you're shy just say hello at the start and ask where everyone wants to start from.

Some teams don't need to use it, if you have a good team that understands what the multi-player is all about and how best to compleate all 11 waves you can work very well without using it. You will know what your team mates will do after the first wave and you can act accordingly to protect them if need be, if everyone on the team does that you will have a very effective team that can play without speaking one word.
