Why are mics so rarely used?

75% of the time I never get any response. I keep talking anyway. It doesn't bother me that people don't respond. I was shy as a kid and I understand there are a whole host of reasons for not talking, from not having a mic to not liking the push-to-talk setup to just not having anything to say. It's fine. I can usually tell that people hear and understand me from their actions.
I've also never heard anybody raging or swearing. I heard a slur once. For the most part, everybody has been well behaved, and in some cases I've made new Origin friends.

If I hear one more Vanguard or Krogan complain about bleeding out, half a mile from the rest of the team, I'm going punch a baby.

My written english is acceptable, if faulty, but as far as opening my mouth, well let's just say you'd probably have to cut through my accent with a chainsaw to get what I am trying to say, so I just keep quiet rather than make a fool of myself.
so yeah, shyness gets my vote.

Then there is also the fact the game doesn't seem to correctly identify people who actually has mics. Then there is ALSO people with some very dodgy mics.

Granted, I'll occasionally want to tell someone they're an idiot if they charge a Prime surrounded by Pyros when they're not the host, but I try to be generally helpful. That said, it would make things alot easier if people used their mics atleast sparingly or even listened to others.
Getting a warning that a downed player is in a kill zone would be alot more helpful than trying to get to him quickly. Not sure why, but I usually feel like I have to revive people or suffer the wrath of them standing right next to me if I happen to fall and bleeding out.
Mics also make rounds go by faster. Here's a decent example:
Reapers on Reactor - Silver
Team Comp: 2x Turian Sentinel, 1x Vanguard, 1x Drell Adept
The long and short of the match is this: Instead of detonating reave "ever" with Warp, Charge or Nova, the vanguard decided to go rambo and kept dying, and the Turians just Overloaded every single time it came off CD which made it so that when bigger packs or enemies did come along, I had to be very quick to get a BioCombo off w/ my grenades.
I asked them a few times to Warp my Reaved targets, especially when they were having trouble with the larger foes/groups, but they didn't care. Now normally I'd say whatever, to each his own playstyle, but at the end of the match, one of the Turian's decided to comment through his previously never used microphone that the match took entirely too long.
---
The same thing happens on occasion when I play CQC Infiltrator. I'll stick with one of my team-mates, covering his back while he covers mine, Shield Draining enemies before they eat a mouth full of claymore. Half way through the match, I am often forced to start sprinting in between the other team-mates that are half-way across and map (on their own) because they've gotten themselves killed. If I don't revive them, they'll complain that the infiltrator isn't doing his job. Again, to each his own, but if this type of play ever causes us to lose, atleast one person comments as to why it was that we lost. Microphones would have simplified this matter, don't go Rambo on your own and expect your teammates to cover you.

Because i have no interest in talking to random strangers and can work very well in a team and stick close to teammates without needing to talk to them.
I'd be more inclined to communicate with people over a chatbox instead, it does prevent me from having to listen to them **** and moan every time they miss a target, go down for the count or believe people do something they shouldn't be doing.
Not to mention a chatbox would also prevent me from needing to listen to languages i don't understand and/or the lives of strangers in the background. Especially those who love to play with their volume tuned up and preferably a "voice" activated mic, so everyone can enjoy their gamesound as well.
No, there is a reason i don't do VOIP in PUG.

But, so far I haven't been insulted for having a higher than average voice so that's a step up from Call of Duty or Battlefield.

Its much clearer and easier to understand, and one does not have to worry about accents.
In addition I preferr to rest my voice when I'm playing games.
I also rely heavily on both sight and "sound" in game, and find voice chat to be far too distracting.

Because usually when people talk, I hear nothing but "revive me, noob!", only encouraging me to not do exactly that. The people who use their mics the most are the ones who imagine that the verbal turds they share with the world are so important.

I must have had good luck so far. Most people that I have chatted with have been completely amiable and ready for some team work. Even the young ones. Played with an 11 year old from Sweden today (phrasing) who was totally polite. One night I got on slightly (maybe more than slightly) intoxicated. I confessed right at the beginning, and they were fine with it and we proceeded to be totally goofy for the next 30 min or so. Fun times.
But yeah I never want to be rude to my team members, or have them be rude to me.

ive never died getting stabbed in the back. and my awareness of the level is pretty much peaked considering ive played the maps and beaten the enemies a milliin times now. nothing is new to me so need to talk to anyone. its not like im dieing while not on cooldown.
sometimes i wish i put it on to tell the guy standing 3 feet from me to look down and revive me but i find other ways to irritate those individuals.

I think part of the problem is that people on xbox live are antisocial, cuz no one talks at all. I've noticed that when girls game they don't speak if guys are talking for fear of ridicule, insults, stalkers, and the desperate. I don't care if you're male or female, black white or polka dotted, young or old, or even if you're good at the game, just talk. Even if it's to tell me to shut the expletive deleted up.
Not so much anti-social. I just do not feel like talking to 12 year olds I can not understand anyway. Some people are just more private than others. I do not accept friend request's from people I do not know, so why would I feel the need to chat up people I am NEVER going to know?
I don't feel like being asked where I am from or blah blah or the assumptions that go along with it (I am a girl, from California...). I just feel like shooting a Banshee, okay?

How do you know whos talking in game?
You don't. You can tell in the lobby via the little microphone icon, but in game you have to guess if you don't know them, or infer their class/race by the comments they make in regard to strategy/position/etc.
Text chat and indicators for Voice chat would make team-work in "PUG" games much more doable.

Ah ok, thats what I was thinking but some of these posts made me think I might be missing something.
Personally I find ingame voice chat to be very inconsistant when it comes to volume, some people are super quiet others are annoyingly loud. When playing with friends most often we use another program to chat on while we play, when playing with random players like its been mentioned before here most of the time the talking is along the lines of rediculing other players which just makes me mute my sound. I'm fine with team play but when you don't know a person and dont recognize their voice it is very confusing trying to communicate.
The game is fun as it is, while chatting would potentially make it more fun, it also has the potential of ruining the game for you.

I don't understand why so few players use mics. It makes the game so much more fun and feel more like a cooperative game.
Commonly, I'll enter a game and give a quick "Hey guys!" without a reply. This usually continues in the game, although some players start talking once I start.
This seems less of an issue on gold (where most people know what they are doing) or bronze (where four good individuals will still win without tactics) but on silver....
Most of the times, it feels like I'm playing with AI bots.
Mics make the game so much more enjoyable and a LOT easier, too. For instance, you will...
... not find four players running around the map like headless chicken
... won't be surprised from centurions/ geth hunters from behind if somebody gives you a warning
... can be aware/ make others aware of tough enemies to take them out quickly by focus-firing
... might get to know other players
... will develop a team- cohesion
... avoid running into a death trap by desperatly trying to revive a swarmed squad mate
... take out guardians very easily by one playing acting as decoy or the sniper guy asking the other players not
to shoot the shield so the sniper can actually hit the mail slot more easily
.......
So what's the reason people don't use mics?
- If you are shy: just start talking. Nobody judges you, nodoby sees you. Easy
- If you talk to somebody in your room and just play casually: Just let your fellow players know or switch the mic off
for private talks and quickly on for squad talks (it can be a second or two here and there to make a difference)
- If you think your accent/ language is too poor: who cares? You'll actually get better by trying, and accents (I've got
one, too) are part of the Mass Effect universe.
Any other ideas?
I agree, especially since I play on Xbox Live - the console that COMES WITH A FREE MIC!!! Most of the time, if I can't get freinds to play with me, I'll still stay in their live parties just because I know from experiance that I'd only be greeted with dead silence in the random game lobbies anyways.
