Personally speaking, I don't use a mic because I don't want to hear peoples' annoying voices saying annoying things.

I don't use the mic mostly because no one is using them and I don't want want to be the only one talking. The one time I did use them the others thought I was a teenage boy. It was hilarious. Being the only girl in the room can be a little awkward.

I always have my headset on, but when I'm playing public games I only speak when A) spoken to, or B) when there's something the team should know. If I'm playing with friends, I'm in party chat. If I'm the only one with a mic, then I usually don't bother with it. I don't want to be that guy that's the only one talking, annoying everybody else.

...That and I tend to get so wrapped up in what I'm doing that unless everybody else needs to know something, I forget to talk.

my desktop wont run the mic in ME3, sadly ... dunno what the heck it is but the system (windows) picks it up just fine however, ME3 will not register my mic and therefore i cannot talk :/

I don't have a mic, when someone spoke to me it freaked me out, I actullay replied back and went HELLO???? in a freaked out voice...then remembered they couldn't hear me. x.x

Also, I'm female...learned the hard way that mics are a bad idea.

For the people who have had trouble getting their mic working, first check the Sound options to make sure you have the right input device selected. If that's correct, you might have to increase the gain (I think Windows has a +20dB mic boost option somewhere by default, if not just try adjusting in +10dB or whatever increments you have until it works).

That said, I mostly only talk when there's an important reason to do so. Mostly because I play primarily in the late night/early morning, and I don't think my paper-walled apartment's neighbors would appreciate me yelling about banshees and phantoms at 3am.

I usually never use a mic in multiplayer games but ME3 forces me to because of the lack of text chat. I find that simple things like saying "phantom incoming" or just telling someone you're going to revive him (so he won't use medigel) can be really useful.

I want to use the mic on PC, but for some reason I have to shout to be heard. I have no problem with teamspeak, I can talk fine there, but the voice chat of ME3 just doesn't work fine.

I don't have one yet, I do for my ps3 but I play ME on pc. I'm getting one soon though. Turtle Beach is releasing the Ear Force z11 on April 13th.

I use the PX3 for both PS3 and PC.  Really good head set.

Yes, I chat but more often than not don't get a reply.  What scares me the most about chatting, is the absurd amount of weirdos that are out there.

Yeah I wanted to go with something a little less bank draining. The z11 seems like the perfect fit, just have to wait for them to release it. On ps3 when MPing I always use my bluetooth ear piece but my pc doesn't support it and I would rather have a full headset for pc gaming, hense the z11. ; )

People dont use mics for the same reason that text based chat is a "must" for almost 15 years.

ANONYMITY.

The use of a mic, gives a more personal touch to the player behind the screen, a thing which scares most people playing over the internet.

Also there seems to be a bug relating to peoples' IPs from different continents and or countries, in which even if the players have mics installed they cant speak to each other (red icon).
I've bumped into that kind of problem, many times - in which case I prefer a third party software like Skype or Teamspeak.

All in all, for a game that promotes the use of the microphone for successfull cooperation, it's rarely used.
And that, in it's own, is a great community-related dissapointment for me.

My headset is always plugged in and slung over my ear.

However, I only speak when friends are present, I am asked a question or I have mission critical information to pass to the team.

I'm not here to chat with strangers about how much they love chocolate ice cream or the current status of their dog's health, nor do I feel like listening to them sing a stirring rendition of Billie Jean.

By not responding to any "social" chat that has no bearing on the match, I have found that I effectively reduce the amount of inane, vapid small talk I am subjected to on a daily basis.

If I stay quiet, others generally stay quiet. This is a good thing.

1) Because they don't have mics
2) Because mics don't work
3) Because it's not necessary.

... take out guardians very easily by one playing acting as decoy or the sniper guy asking the other players not

If people lack the common sense to not stagger targets the sniper can kill with one shot (notice the "Widow" kills in the bottom right corner of the screen) then talking to them will probably not achieve anything
4) There's always a guy using a mic with speakers without push-to-talk, so you have to disable voice chat anyway

1. Not needed. If people learn what they should be doing, the communication isn't a necessity.
2. Most girls don't use them, as giving away the fact that you are girl makes any guys suddenly stop playing the game and start trying to get a date.
3. Rudeness. Many people just don't have the manners to be interacting with people.
4. Over-controlling people, who think that the mic is there for them to dictate what everyone should be doing, even when its clear to most that they don't have a clue.
5. Background noises.... Others don't want to hear you hacking up a lung, playing your "kewl" music, dogs barking, wife/kids screaming.
6. Immersion? Some of us actually play the multiplayer as if it is still part of the game and imagining a level of discipline and focus that your teammates should have is often shattered when they speak, "Yo! Dude... did you just see what I did?"
7. Whining. "Come rez me... I just died". We know that ... we heard the voice tell us you went down. "Come on, man, I am almost dead". "You just stole my kill" "Thats the 8th time Ive died, YOU guys are no good to play with".

Mics? No thanks.

I don't have a mic, mainly because I don't particularly like multiplayer games so haven't had a need for one. While I enjoy the ME3 multiplayer I don't feel it's necessary since I pretty much play on bronze only and a bit of situational awareness works just as well as people giving out warnings and such. I'm not buying a mic for one game, even if I had the money.

Generally when I've encountered people using a mic here on PC, they've been calm, polite types asking team members to go to the hack objective. For some reason there's often a couple of players that see a hack objective and go in the opposite direction (not just someone keeping us from getting swarmed, just actively ignoring the objective).

So far I've not run into any offensive people. Still, there's always time.

I don't know about you, but I make good progress running into the battle and shooting everyone in sight. Its all about a player's skill and your teammates' skills.

On topic:
Not everyone has a mic for one, and some would prefer typing over talking anyway.

Because i use a PC, hate talking into a mic, and wish I could text chat. BTW - I hate it when people abuse voice chat with verbal spam so I have the sound cut off on voice.

I only play bronze level multiplayer because i'm not that good at it, and don't enjoy trying the higher levels because the elitists give me a hard time when i do. I only play multiplayer to keep my single player readiness up.

I got kicked from the lobby for saying ''Let's go Billy'' in the lobby. No idea why... was a bronze too. Kinda makes you NOT want to use a mic.

Because sometimes my lovely partner would like to enjoy whatever she is watching, reading without me holding a loud one sided conversation in the same room.
