main reason i dont like MMO games is the degenerate community you are forced to play with in order to do anything at the end-game. the elitist pricks and basement dwellers and so on you are forced to be friendly to if you want to see that cool new raid... just ruins the whole thing for me.
if they could actually come up with a way to separate normal people away to their own servers i could probably enjoy them.
You might be surprised to find out that many people in those high level raid guilds are people with college degrees, careers, family, friends, etc. They just don't suck at the game, and they don't like having to teach others how to play the game. Just because they have different expectations from your own, doesn't make them basement dwellers or friendless losers.
thats a pretty standard reply which doesnt justify these peoples behavior at all.
when they are sitting on the game talking trash to everyone else, acting like pricks, and just generally being jerks to anyone who will give them the time of day there isnt much excuse for their behavior.
whats funny is the mmo games i have played im always considered an amazing player, im really good at games. im not one of those people who has no idea what they are doing, i put in the effort and i do very well. i constantly get people praising me and asking to do more things with me and so on.
the difference is im actually nice to the people i meet. i dont talk down to them, i dont treat them like dirt, and i dont have this superiority complex i need to impress other people on a video game with.
no matter how nice i am it never fails that you run into these pricks that arnt even very good at the game, yet treat everyone around them like they are crap. the behavior has spread so much in most the mmo games that its just accepted as normal and they dont even realize what kind of pricks they are being, they think its normal.
i just cant stand that at all. i might talk junk on forums to people, but i separate that from the in-game people i know and play with. i treat those people with respect like they are my equal. it seems most people cant do that and just continue to treat people bad even when they are sitting there playing the game with them.
a simple example is you are doing a raid, something goes wrong and you have an issue:
me - "what happened there, do we need to change something?"
****** - "lololol you guys suck, lrn2play, worst group ever"
I'm not saying there aren't drooling troglodytes in those games. I am merely suggesting that your perception of high level, organized guilds is probably being skewed by the existence of very immature brats, and to apply the stereotype to everyone is unjustified.

The problem I have here is with your earlier use of the term many. Given the population of WoW, it could mean as few as a couple 100 all the way up to a majority. If it weren't for all the people I'd rather ignore in them, MMOs would be a lot more fun.

DA:O never had dull moments for the most part, and kept me hooked until the very end. Now I'm eager to get through my second run with a new character. In MMO's, way too much time is spent on tedious quests just to add a small fractional increase to my armor class or damage (all of which will be rendered useless when expansions and level updates come out).

It's the same fallacy as believing that because a game forum is full of whines, the game is horribly broken and not fun to play. For every loudmouth ruining your experience, there are a dozen players peacefully going about their activities not harassing you at all.

i never mentioned high level, organized guilds.
you came to that conclusion completly on your own.
im just left to wonder why you jumped to that and got so defensive about it now.

See, it's posts like this that leave me wondering to which camp you really belong. I think I'm being exceptionally even-minded in this discussion.

well its true, i talk about elitist pricks and basement dwellers you are forced to be nice to in order to see the raids.
you took that and started going on about 'high end guilds are this, that, and the other'
i didnt say "all the high end guilds in mmo are elitist pricks and basement dwellers" you jumped to that conclusion on your own.
which leaves me to wonder why.

Because you seem incapable of distinguishing between reality and perception. I wonder if your rush to judgement about other players is not in fact coloring your experience in such games. I also assume you will take these words to be a personal attack and will proceed to get defensive or insulting. It wouldn't be the first time you have done so with me.

I never said you used fallacious reasoning, only an ambiguous word. You're right, tho, about only one person being sufficient to ruin my experience - I just wish he or she didn't show up every time I tried to do something!

if anything its the opposite, you seem to have gotten all defensive about your 'high end organized raiding guild' when i wasnt even talking about that.
are you under some illusion that your own guild is the only ones who can do these raids and things in mmo games, and that everything mentioned about what the average player must suffer through in order to enjoy the endgame of them is personally directed at you?

The expansions that made all your hard work getting to 60 meaningless, the boring grind to a new level cap, the elitist guilds you had no chance of getting into, the other pointless guilds that didn't run any dungeons, being forced to interact with immature 15 year olds.... or 50 year olds.... when you didn't feel like it, the lack of immersion. Only PVP was fun. I'm not anti-social but I think an RPG needs to be an escape. I cannot imagine how depressing it would be to grind from lvl 1-80 now.
It's a huge timesink with no reward unless you are an unemployed no- lifer, who can grind for 6+ hours a day, or be available for your guild any time it's required .

Marshalleck, he didn't say anything about high-end raiding guilds. I'm in one and I didn't make that leap myself from what he said. I almost did, but then I realised what level of experience he's talking from and I understand his viewpoint. There are plenty of pickup-group raids that go on, or lower-tier raiding guilds, and if you aren't in a top-tier raiding guild, you have to deal with the bull**** of the lower-tier ones, until you get enough experience to get into one of those higher-tier guilds, but if you don't have the time to devote to it, you aren't going to get in anyway, so you're kind of stuck in a cesspool off ****s, trying to make friends with them because you want to actually kill something beyond a heroic 5 man.

See, this is what I am talking about with you rushing to judgment. You assume there is a guild to which I belong, and that I wish to defend elitist behavior. The fact is I don't belong to any such guild, and I haven't played WoW or any other MMO since around June of 2005.
You become defensive because you assume the most sinister intent in other people, and your reaction to other people forces confrontations.

Very well. You've shown once again that it's simply not possible to engage you in civil discourse.
