It is not broken, a disc snapped in half is broken, corrupted data is broken, glitch or bug that prevents you physically reaching the end of the game due to code error is broken. Your dislike of how they ended it is not "broken", if you can reach the end of the game the product "works" as intended.

The story it tells is what is broken about it.  From the point you go up on that floating white platform the story is no longer Mass Effect, everything past that point violates directly every tenant of the Mass Effect story.

In the Mass Effect story Shepard doesn't just accept what he is told, he challenges everyone and makes his own choices.  In the ending Shepard is compliant and accepts everything he is told.

In the Mass Effect story, decisions you make matter, and have lasting impact.  In the ending, nothing you did before that points matter, and the choices you make after that point are destroy galactic civilization as we know it with one of 3 colors.

In the Mass Effect story we form bonds with our squadmates and become invested in their lives, in their stories, and they become invested in us, willing to put their lives on the line every day for us, and us for them.  In the ending they abandon us and high tail it for who knows where with no thought for us at all, nor do we get a chance to learn about their lives after that moment.

It gets even more broken when you start picking at all the last second retcons and plot holes.

In all ME titles the responses yet get allowed to pick is chosen by them, the decisions you are allowed is chosen by them. What impact they have is chosen by them and the bonds you create only exist because they allow it as they could quite easily have killed off the ones you like if they chose to do so. All part of the framework of the story they wished to tell. Bioware are one of the few developers that allow the use of such method and framework and one of if not the only ones to span it across three titles.

Which apprently is now about deus ex machina's, nonsense and space magic, unlike everything else in every game.

If thats how they wish to tell their story then thats how they wish to do it, simple as that.

And if you watched the video and saw how ALL of the polls being taken thus far lean, you can see that the vast majority of people do not want to hear them tell a story like this. And if they continue to tell a story like this, they are not going to have nearly enough people listening to them to be able to continue.

Moving on, great video. Glad we have so many clear thinking and intelligent people on our side to properly lay out the many, many reasons we are taking offense with Bioware for their actions.

I'll be stepping out of this thread now to avoid the trololo. He just wants attention and he will get no more from me.

Great video. He hits well-defined ideas in a clear, thorough-enough fashion to get his point across.

This was a perfect review as to why the ending of Mass Effect 3 sucked.

Constructive criticism be damned, if the indoctrination theory was never intended from the start (which may be the case) ME3 easily has the most absurd and god-awful ending to, well, anything in the history of mankind.

Even the Super Mario Bros movie.

I don't believe it was their intention either, BUT I still believe that Bioware can pull themselves out of this mess by expanding upon the theory via DLC. It's literally the perfect solution to ALL the plotholes and inconsistencies that have arisen due the nature of ME3's ending.

Plus, the fact that the reapers have possibly been influencing our protagonist since the first game is all kinds of awesome.

Oh man.. i still don't get over it. All these decisions just affected war assets.

Thats like at the battle of endor suddenly the screen gets black, and a text pops up saying: meanwhile, luke defeated the emperor because he chose to become a jedi in "a new hope" - the end.

Extremely well done. I'm about halfway through - just wanted to comment and say thank you for posting this link.

He presents his opinions in such a well thought-out manner. It's amazing that some want to counter all of this by just saying "it's the ending as Bioware wanted it, suck it up."

That may well be true (if crass) - but this man has not just one, but many points, and explains in great detail why the ending broke the hearts of so many of us. The endings aren't just bad - they're unworthy.

Schrijver.

Thank you so much for posting the link for that video. An awesome 39 minutes spent. The video was well thought out, intelligent, and it brought up a ton of very valid points about the game. I certainly hope more watch it, especially those at Bioware.

That's what they are after, which is why it's better to ignore, they have the weapon but you have the ammo.

holy crap, this is one of the best list of grievances ive seen so far.
if bioware actually adresses all of that, im pretty sure ill be back to my "shut up and take my money"-stance.
explains perfectly what the issues are and why this ending does not work and why we LOVED the series until then.
unfortunately i dont think many people will watch the whole thing till the end (at least not many people who have an impact on whether or not something will change)

Wow just wow.
That video was totally worth the 39 minutes of my life.

It perfectly expresses how many fans feel about the ending in contrast to the rest of the trilogy.

It also strenghtens my opinion that Bioware had to make this ending because of time restraints. We know they can do much better. Narrative coherence is what they usually do best.

We really need BioWare to see this video. Or is there an even better video/article/blogpost/wall of text out there that sums it all up?

There are quite a few posts, videos and articles which do a good job of summarising precisely why the ending fails, but if I had to pick one for BioWare to read/watch it would be this video however.

Ah this video, yes it's very well done. He put it much better then I've been able to.. since I focused more on arguing how tech singularity is dumb and cliche/contrived.

I tweeted Bioware this video. Now, I don't think they are going to watch it, but it makes me feel better. XD
