I think that gamers can be split into two groups(only if were are looking at things as very black nd white, obviously the are people in between).
I buy and play lots of games. I also have ALOT of games I have only got half way through and never wanted to pick up again.
The reason for this is that I play games mostly for the story that they take me on.
I agree that mass effect three was a quite well put together game in terms of mechanics, but it is the story that has kept me intested in the series(and the epic music!).
I was wondering how many people play games mainly for the story and how many play it solely for the game?
Who plays games for the story?

It's mostly the story for me, but gameplay does factor in for me as well. ME3 had a great story up until the ending when I thought that Harbinger would be involved and he wasn't (extra for a small cameo which was unacceptable). This disappointed even more than ending, but to be honest the ending screwed it up for me as well.

Mostly story. I don't really care for competition or challenge outside of a select few games (Trials HD!).

Why the need for so many labels?! Can't a Gamer be a Gamer?!
I played for it all. Story, character development, gameplay, entertainment, and especially CLOSURE.
A good GOOD series; one that took me a little push to really fall in love with tbh.

Both, however, I started playing games back in the Atari/NES days where story was a luxury. I love games with a well written stories and great characters, but I still like a lot of games today don't really have a story, like Terraria.

Story, definitely. If I can't get into it, then I usually don't enjoy the gameplay.

When I play a Bioware game, I play it for the story. Actually with the exception of a couple of games, all games I play are story driven...

I definitely play solely for the story. If the story is bad then it doesn't matter how great the battle mechanics are. That'd be like enjoying a book because the cover was nice or liking a movie because the special effects are awesome. The story is what drives the game, it's (usually) what makes the gamer invested in the game.

Story, but I have to be able to play it, so gameplay isn't totally irrelevant.

i'm sure everyone here plays mass effect for the story, i play things like battlefield for the gameplay though(singleplayers on those are often cliche and bad)

I look at games has interactive Movies/Books, they have to have an immersive story, I dispise this generations focus on online multi-player, if it wasnt for games like Mass Effect,Fallout and Dead Space, the gaming world would be a shallow place today

I would say both, but then again I liked Just Cause 2 so I guess more for the gameplay.
