Im here for the story and the characters.. I will tolerate bad gameplay to a point if the story is there.

I primarily go for story, if all I cared about was good mechanics I wouldn't have played games like Giants: Citizen Kabuto(I love that game) or Freelancer.
But good mechanics combined with good story is always a plus =)

The story, especially the characters.

A good 80% to 95% of the time I play games for the story. There are very rare exceptions like Tetris, Lumines and Solitare where I'm just playing a game for the sake of playing a game but the main reason why most of my games are rpgs is because I love a good story.

Story, game play is important but if the story is utter ****e then I lose interest fast. Where as if game mechanics are subpar but has an entertaining story I can still enjoy it and tolerate the mechanics.

Story.
I can overlook poor gameplay for good story, I can't overlook poor story for good gameplay.

That depends on what I buy it for. I buy games like ME for the story. I buy games like Skyrim for the game.

both, but im much more likely to buy and play a game with a good story and stilted gameplay than i am a game with great game play and no story.

I only play for the story. The gameplay only bothers me if the interface is virtually unusable.

I think that gamers can be split into two groups(only if were are looking at things as very black nd white, obviously the are people in between).
I buy and play lots of games. I also have ALOT of games I have only got half way through and never wanted to pick up again.
The reason for this is that I play games mostly for the story that they take me on.
I agree that mass effect three was a quite well put together game in terms of mechanics, but it is the story that has kept me intested in the series(and the epic music!).
I was wondering how many people play games mainly for the story and how many play it solely for the game?
Depends on the game. The ME series and Final Fantasy games I played primarily for the story. Then I'll play Mario games and fighting games for the gameplay. Then, of course, there are games like Zelda which do a great job of both!

I play most games for the story.
Some I don't because the story isn't the point.
E.g. Gotham City Impostors is not about story in the least. It is about being a ridiculous batman or joker impostor and being ridiculous.

In general, I try to find a balance for both. For Mass Effect specifically, story.

Depends. Bioshock I wanted cause it looked cool and the story was pretty sweet. ME I heard good things about and when i tried that game (along with Bioshock) make me pay more attention to the stories. Depends though, Gears, Halo I play but do not care much about the story. COD obviously I dont really care. Althought COD4 wasnt tha bad story wsie.
I can play a game thats fun without needing a story, buts its a nice bonus to get attached to characters.

Depends on what I'm expecting from a game. Skyrim has a pretty lame over-arching story, but it's fun as hell and the side-questlines are pretty good. I play mindless shooters because they're fun. I play Mass Effect because the story is amazing and I care about the characters.

Depends on the game - if its an FPS, the gameplay better be top notch or it doesn't matter how good the story is.... if its an RTS, the gameplay also better be top notch or be reduced to You-Tube video watching for the story only... if its even a good story.
If I'm playing an RPG --- 90% Story.
These days however, looks like all genres are mixed in with a pretty advanced story whether its Call of Duty, BioShock, StarCraft... so its becomming that story and gameplay are even in terms of importance.

Story all the way, I find games without a story kinda pointless and.. well cheap. Theres no sense buying a 60€ game if it only has some clicking value and nothing else... ill play angry birds or something similar instead of those...

Depends on the mood really.
Foremost I want a game that has a good story, with a solid character. couple that with a decent gameplay, good music and sfx and the occasional 18+ goody and I'm a happy panda.
Some elements coupled together work better than others of course. (Mass Effect really providing most of these , most of the time is of course a no brainer. except for the ending)
Then again, there's times I just wanna shoot some bad guys, and I'll play shooters.
Simple enough really

Story has my preference, but I like it when it's accompanied by good gameplay. They complement each other when done right
