I play games like Mass Effect for the story, of course.
The combat is funny, but i always consider it a second part of the game (And i play on insanity)

I play rpgs for the story, but there's gameplay elements that can keep me from enjoying it. Example: top down views (like old rpgs), the god feeling doesn't do it for me.
The setting is what absolutely does it for me though, I tried playing Fallout New Vegas recently and I can't get into it, a very boring universe imo.
Sci-fi is a winner for me and medieval fantasy has taken its toll but Skyrim and bioware's dragon age are games that I can still keep going back to without feeling bored.
So I play it for the story+ universe.
That being said there's plenty of games I play for the fun factor, left 4 dead, battlefield games, halo pc, etc... nothing like some good old multiplayer

For Mass Effect the story has been the main point, though without acceptable gameplay, I doubt I would play it. It is like DX:HR, i loved the story of the game, but I never finished it because I found the gameplay to be extreamly boring, the AI was just way to stupid for me to enjoy it.
Some games Story is of no importance, it is very dependant upon the game relly, the setting and what it is about. Games like Call of Duty, i could not care less about story, how many stories about evil terrorists can one take.

Well it depends. Like OP I play a lot of different games.
Some I play for story, others for fun gameplay.
RPG's need a good story IMO, but a game like Saint's Row the Third I play for gameplay and love every minute of it. Some games deliver on both fronts. Mass Effect (for the most part) has great story and good gameplay. The Assassin's Creed series deliver on both for me as well (Ezio Auditore is one of the best video game characters ever in my opinion).
Diff'rent Strokes.

Story, but gameplay is indeed important. But I love a good story and that alone could keep me playing a game. I'm a little different, but if you flip it, I couldn't keep playing. Good gameplay without a good story gets old fast to me. A good story on the other hand can keep my attention and bring me back later for another play through.

Generally, I'm very forgiving of a weak story (or lack thereof) if the gameplay is enjoyable. It is, after all, a video game. I do adjust my standards, however, if the game is like ME and the time between roleplaying and "actual gameplay" is more or less evenly divided.
This adjustment is a big factor for my disappointment in the ending, as well as other things even going back to ME2. I just expected something better because I was confident in the ability of the developer.

I thought I was buying both. That's why I bought ME3, not MW3 or GoW3.

I play mainly for story. you can present me the best game with best graphics and game mechanics... but If there is no story to it, or a really bad one that seems just like an afterthought... I will not be interested.

Mostly for gameplay and multiplayer. Mass Effect was a very rare exception for me.

Story; Crysis was boring as hell due to lack of story. There is just no meaning to what you do if there's no good motivation.

With Mass Effect, I played mainly for the characters. Of course, they had to ruin it in the end and have all of them either dead or stranded so they could leave it open for "speculation."

I play games for their story. 98% of the games I buy are bought because of the story. (If you ask about the other 2%, I usually buy wrestling games because I love wrestling and I only buy certain mp games just to play them with my friends.) Gameplay is important but not as important as the story to me. The story is what keeps people engaged and wanting to finish the game. For me, a game can have **** gameplay but an amazing story and it will keep me interested. An example of that would be The Force Unleashed. I hated the gameplay but loved the story.
Bioware is my favorite game company because they tell amazing stories and allow you to make the main character from the way he looks and acts yours.

I play for story and gameplay. There are some games that I like the story concept of, but gameplay just drives me up the damn wall. Kingdoms of Amalur (Reckoning, I think it was?) game is a good example. I like the story and find it intriguing, but the gameplay (and spazzy camera) made me rage. XD I didn't even bother to finish the demo after the "story" part was over.

I play STORY-DRIVEN GAMES for the story.
Such as most JRPGS, and most Bioware games, including Mass Effect. God knows I'm not playing Final Fantasy for the gameplay, lol.
When I want to just play, I play more action-oriented games, such as Ninja Blade, Burnout, Devil may Cry, and Sonic.

If the only thing you care about is the story to games, why wouldn't you just watch a let's play or read the script instead of buying the game?
Story is a huge factor for me - especially the characterisation and lore, but the gameplay has to be atleast partially good for me to play a game.

Story. Definitely story.
I enjoy good gameplay, but I never buy a game for that reason. I buy the game because the story looks interesting.
