For me it depends on the type of game.
RPG: 80% story/20% gameplay mechanics.
RTS: 90% gameplay mechanics/10% story
TBS: 70% gameplay mechanics/30% story (I don't care for scenarios. But I like to make my own story based on the way that different sides interact. So, in this case, "story" depends on AI diplomacy/effectiveness/differentiation.)
Theme Park MMO: 65% gameplay mechanics/35% story.
Sandbox MMO: 90% gameplay mechanics/10% story.
Shooters: I don't play these much. Halo's the only one I play. I liked Halo's story well enough, but mostly it's an excuse to get together with friends and shoot each other up.
Fixed. I never played EvE online or any PvP based mmo for a "story" or PvE
Fair enough. I'll have to take your word on the clarification since I've never played EVE online etc.

Is there a game with both? So far it seems like every game I've seen sacrifice story for combat or vice versa.sH0tgUn jUliA wrote...
Both. Action without context sucks. Story without any content I should read.

Akrham City was close, for an action game it was very well written, even the side quests were carefully done. All around excellent game.

It can break up even further as MMO is just a broad term meaning what the name implies. It can be any style including FPS. RPGs are just easier to make.
In fact MMO was one thing non-MMOs lack : COMMUNITY
Just because all the fans of Mass Effect can come together on the forums doesn't mean they can play together with more then 4 players at once.

I normally don't play action games, i just watch them being played on single player and sometimes join in co-op. Arkham City was good, but my favourite action game story so far is Unchartered 3. The graphics are also out of this world.Aaleel wrote...

Combat with no story just gets boring quickly for me. I tried 2 shooters that my friends said were among the best around and if I didn't like them shooters just weren't my thing. I got bored quickly, so I guess shooters just aren't my thing lol.

I buy games for the story if it has one, but I also buy games just for the gameplay (like MP games and such).

I think rockstar games mix both pretty well. And Assassin's Creed II kind of does though the story does take some leaps.
