Both. Action without context sucks. Story without any content I should read.

To OP, RPG players. It's kinda the point more often than not. That and "complexity".

Both. Gameplay mechanics shape the experience just as much as a quality story, for me. Need both.

For me it depends on the type of game.

RPG: 80% story/20% gameplay mechanics.

RTS: 90% gameplay mechanics/10% story

TBS: 70% gameplay mechanics/30% story (I don't care for scenarios. But I like to make my own story based on the way that different sides interact. So, in this case, "story" depends on AI diplomacy/effectiveness/differentiation.)

Theme Park MMO: 65% gameplay mechanics/35% story.
Sandbox MMO: 90% gameplay mechanics/10% story.

Shooters: I don't play these much. Halo's the only one I play. I liked Halo's story well enough, but mostly it's an excuse to get together with friends and shoot each other up.

Fixed. I never played EvE online or any PvP based mmo for a "story" or PvE

Fair enough. I'll have to take your word on the clarification since I've never played EVE online etc.

The two types of game I most like are:
a) Story-based RPGs
B) Sandbox games with emergent gameplay

Is there a game with both? So far it seems like every game I've seen sacrifice story for combat or vice versa.

Story all the way. The gameplay and graphics are second. Sound is very important, though.

Akrham City was close, for an action game it was very well written, even the side quests were carefully done.  All around excellent game.

It can break up even further as MMO is just a broad term meaning what the name implies. It can be any style including FPS. RPGs are just easier to make.

In fact MMO was one thing non-MMOs lack : COMMUNITY

Just because all the fans of Mass Effect can come together on the forums doesn't mean they can play together with more then 4 players at once.

I normally don't play action games, i just watch them being played on single player and sometimes join in co-op. Arkham City was good, but my favourite action game story so far is Unchartered 3. The graphics are also out of this world.

I get bored with just combat. I love Arkham city but when I start it up I play through the story again. I get bored on the battle maps, just like I got bored when I broke down and played ME3 MP with my friends who wouldn't stop nagging me.

Combat with no story just gets boring quickly for me. I tried 2 shooters that my friends said were among the best around and if I didn't like them shooters just weren't my thing. I got bored quickly, so I guess shooters just aren't my thing lol.

For Mass Effect the story, something like Civilization it's the gameplay.

Depends on the game.

I buy games for the story if it has one, but I also buy games just for the gameplay (like MP games and such).

I can forgive a game with a good story for average gameplay. I don't do it the other way around.

Story is what's important for me.

I play the ME franchise for the story and its characters. In ME1 the gameplay wasn't bad either, but starting with ME2 both started to suffer from middle-of-the-road-syndrome. If I want to play a shooter then I play an FPS. I love those. A TPS doesn't cut it for me.

I think rockstar games mix both pretty well. And Assassin's Creed II kind of does though the story does take some leaps.

I play mostly for story. That's why I've been very selective now a days. Mass Effect (minus the very disappointing and unsatisfying ending), Deus Ex Human Revolution, Assassins Creed, Half-Life, Mirrors Edge and that's about it. The only one I play purely for gameplay is Ninja Gaiden, this is where I prefer to be challenged.

Story by a longshot...while I can enjoy some gameplay driven games, they aren't anywhere near the level of story/character driven games.

Both. And specifically, I play Mass Effect for the story that I've co-written (this is an important part of why the ending is horrible).
