Story for me. If I didn't I might aswell play Frogger or Tetris all my life.
Who plays games for the story?

Both. Great story but crap gameplay will put me off at the "Should I buy this" stage, and good gameplay but crap story...ugh.

Depends on the game I am getting. Most of the time story is the more important aspect, but occasionally I get something for the gameplay, best example is many FPS's.

Both, though I can play a game with just one or the other. I loved Indigo Prophecy, and I loved Saint's Row 3.

I care about the story. The main reason why I play videogames is for the single player experience. If a game doesn't have a great story, characters, level design, then it fails on most accounts. Multiplayer is just an off-shoot, a spin-off from the main mechanics of the game. I need a reason to play through something, a motivation. Multiplayer doesn't offer that for me. And "because it's fun" is not enough. That mindset is hollow to me.

Both, story>gameplay. But a game with plain bad gameplay is just unplayable, no matter how good the story is.

Story. I'll happily play something with (to a point, depending on the quality of the story) mediocre gameplay if the story is gripping enough. I'm still playing SW:ToR entirely for that reason, and don't feel obligated to stop.
Not to say I'm entirely indifferent to gameplay, if it's entertaining in its own right. I did, for instance, find ME3s combat fun by itself. Multiplayer has no story, but I played that a fair amount. I do appreciate good gameplay mechanics, nor consider them mutually exclusive with narrative, but they're ultimately not what I'm there for.

I take into consideration both, but story > gameplay in my books, if i find a game to shallow on the story department i can't just continue it no matter how entertaining is the gameplay.

Gameplay always goes first. I play ME for the characters, lore, and unique gameplay, the story is pretty average.

I certainly play Bioware's games for the narrative. Or rather, I used to. They're on one hell of a losing streak.

Story is definitely one of the things I value most. Films and books and television gets lots of praise and recognition for amazing stories, but there are also many video games, Mass Effect included, that deserve just as much praise and recognition. It's kind of sad that so many non-gamers are missing out on the wonderful stories that the video game industry has told (uh oh, I'm venturing into video games as art territory

I prioritize story when choosing games. As I'm getting older, I have less and less time to spend playing video games, so I want to make sure that what I buy is something captivating on some level. I don't want to waste money on run and guns and lackluster character motivation. I'm willing to even get over awful game play, so long as the story pays off and I feel invested in the characters.

Story or both story and action. But never to see how many times I have to replay some battle before I get through it.

The story is paramount for me. Gameplay takes second place. That's why I loved ME1 so much. It was a great story, with decent gameplay mechanics. However, I could look past the gameplay mechanics shortcomings because of the game's storyline.
My preferences in games have unfortunately been the cause of my grievances with ME3. I hope it can be addressed soon.

Story! A game without Story is DA2.

In an RPG story all the way, good action is nice to have though regardless.

Depends on the game, but my favorite games to play are story driven. Since Mass Effect was my favorite series you can guess which category it falls into.

Well, two things: it depends upon the game, and both elements are important.
Something like Mario or Steel Empire, it's all about gameplay, but a good story can certainly make things more involving, and thus more rewarding and overall better.
With an RPG, the story is vital, but the gameplay has to be at least tolerable.
