Well, I haven't spent 300 hours playing ME1 for the *gameplay*, that's for sure. Honestly, I loved the gameplay of ME2/3 a lot, but the story is what had me enthralled throughout the entire trilogy.
Who plays games for the story?

Both, though I prefer a good story.

Mostly story, although the gameplay is a major factor. Aside from really casual stuff, I don't think I've ever been satisfied with a game that didn't leave me feeling like I had accomplished something by the end.

It depends on the game currently played. If playing CoD or a shooter like that, its nice to understand why your shooting X person and why X person is shooting you back, but im not demanding a love story, deep and person back ground ect in replacement of nice smooth gameplay
How ever if im playing a game such as Assassin's creed, mass effect ect, you better be damn right i want a deep and personal story behind everything.

I play RPGs purely for the story.
Actually, I play all single player games mostly for the story.

Both depending on the style of game. For a game like ME3? Story. In any good storytelling game I can overlook half assed or even bad mechanics (not saying ME3 had bad mechanics, it didnt.). In a FPS I can overlook a terrible story (99% of FPS's) so long as the action is fun.
Thing is the ME series is a 3rd person shooter RPG. Unfortunatly this time. for the most part....they forgot the RPG part.

If a game has the best gameplay mechanic in history of all games and will never be surpassed in a billion million years but it has no story or the story is so ****** poor that it makes watching paint dry interesting then the game is not for me.
If a game has the best story in history of all games and will never be surpassed in a billion million years but it the gameplay mechanic is atrocious that it makes Checkers gameplay mechanic superior then the game is not for me.
It has to have a good or better story and good or better gameplay mechanics.

I play mostly RPGs and action adventure games, so story is very important to me.

Story. A lot of games' game play are pretty much copy and paste of each other because they are within a well established genre. So without story it will be just one boring repetition

Depends on the game. 95% of the time, I play for the story. But sometimes it IS nice to grab a game just to blow some **** up.

Story first. Gameplay can't be too far behind though.
I remember playing the first Witcher and being bothered by the sub-par voice acting...

Mostly story. I don't really care for competition or challenge outside of a select few games (Trials HD!).

Both are required.
A great story with a lousy gameplay leads me to either cheat or stop playing, because it's too frustrating to go through.
A great gameplay with a lousy story doesn't keep my interest.

I play it for the story, but if a game's gameplay is bad enough, I won't want to keep playing it to finish that story.

A good story can make up for great deal. Alpha Protocol wasn't the greatest game, but the story was good enough that I have gone back to play it a couple of times. Compared to Splinter Cell Conviction, which had amazing gameplay, but the story was so so.
So yeah I play for the story.

Story is a higher draw on me, though for the right kind of gameplay (arcade shooters mostly) it's not necessary.

I play games for the story but the gameplay has to be up there too. If the gameplay is broken, there's no way in hell I can force myself through it, no matter how good the story is.
