Story and content.
Proof? I played Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth for 2 hours today. ****tiest game mechanics I may have ever experienced, but hey, based on Lovecraftian mythos? Please.
Sometimes I just need to shoot things, but I see videogames as interactive art/stories/whathaveyou.

Story.
Am usually willing to go through outdated graphics or clunky gameplay if the game has a compelling and/or immersive enough story. Nothing too bad though i.e. that the mechanics of the gameplay has no ties to the narrative. I might as well just read the script / or grab a novel, if that's the case.
That said, it is that notion of being able to actively participate in the story, as opposed to just passively taking it all in, that grabs me really.

I play most games for the game. My most played games are starcraft and league of legends, and with starcraft 2 i have yet to play any singleplayer. My general opinion for years has been that if I want a story, I'll read a book (I'm an avid reader). If I want to be challenged or have fun exploring interactive mechanics, I'll play a game.
However, Mass Effect convinced me that storytelling games are actually worth something. Props to bioware for that.

I consider games with solid gameplay fun. Games with strong narratives become near and dear to my heart. I spend more time and money on the latter by a significant margin and generally only play the former when gaming online with friends. If I'm playing something single-player, it almost always has to have a compelling narrative.

Depends on the game really. I didn't play Little Big Planet for the story.
But with RPG games and some action games? Story first and foremost for me.

I was a story gamer before I was a gameplay gamer or anything else gamer. I'll take a good story over slick gameplay any day of the week. KOTOR is one of my favourite games ever - it isn't because of the turn-ish DD20 based gameplay - it was because the characters and story were rich.

Story. Is there any other reason to play a single player game if the story is crap?

Well, that totally depends on the game.
I play some games for story (Dragon Age/Mass Effect), some for creative outlet or social aspect (Minecraft) and some for a complete experience (Skyrim).
Very few for only the game play. I’m not a good “gamer”, I don’t do well with action.

It depends: in a RPG, an action/adventure or an adventure game I play mostly for the story and characters (and I'm more forgiving when it comes to gameplay).
When I play a FPS, strategy game, pure action game or a platform I only expect to have fun and I don't care about the story or the characters.

Story and ability to escape from this reality. At least for a bit.

Depends on the game. Excellent story can forgive mediocre gameplay, and vice versa. Unfortunately, I played mass effect for the story. Story collapsed, I was left with a shallow knock-off of Gears of War for the campaign. Multiplayer's interesting, has more longevity for me than horde mode, if only because it'll probably take me a full year to get my black widow to X

story over gameplay;
whereas it depends on the length of the game (the longer the game, the more important story)
if you have a good story, gameplay takes a backseat, and you can overlook all those minor (gameplay) flaws and bugs, that inevitably exist in every game.
if gameplay dominates, and you have (gameplay) flaws in a game, you cant overlook them.
story flaws on the other hand, in a game such as mass effect (1,2 and 3) are MUCH harder to forgive
there are games (like minecraft) that dont need a story, since youre playing them in multiplayeer with friends, but single player games in general need a good story to keep you long term motivated

It depends on the genre. Who would play tower defence, puzzle and turn-based strategy games for the story?

I prefer games that have both. I can excuse a game for lacking in gameplay if they have a good story or vice versa. Recent Bioware games seem to be lacking on the gameplay side, but their storytelling is still excellent.

I was wondering how many people play games mainly for the story and how many play it solely for the game?
No doubt are there games i am playing for the game. The Heist comes to mind, or Darksiders... Prototype... there is actually quite a lit of games i would say i am playing mostly for the Mechanics, where its story takes a backseat.
However when it comes to RPG, and i would consider Mass Effect as an RPG to some degree. Its the story that matters.
Of course i won't be playing the Storymode either, because its not entirely unimportant to me to have a good combat mechanics. But i was content with ME1 combat, to be honest. Of the 3 i probably still like it the best.
But this game, i only bought for 2 reasons: Story... and most importantly "choices". Though, at this point i realize that, after everything, its probably wrong of me to expect ever to see a game like Baldurs Gate or Jade Empire. There won't even be a TOR anymore, after they made it an MMO, i think its quite unlikely to expect them to invest those ressources in doing a real game.
So at the end, to me its all about the story and choices. The games i play for mechanics are usually those i am having for a certain "mood" i am in. I don't really expect to be entertained, but entertaining myself.
Where as in games like this, i expect to be entertained. I want to have a story told and not smack the **** out of stuff or being nostalgic and getting my FPS funk on.
