Story, but I do require good and fun game, otherwise my experience for story will suffer.
Who plays games for the story?

Story definitely.

The difference between a fun game and a great game is always story IMO.

storytelling, but game play has to enhance the storytelling instead of getting in the way.
Bioshock is one great example of this.

Story, and more specifically the characters, and their journeys. For example, I love the Resi games, but didn't ever really care about Code Veronica because it focused on Chris and Claire, my least favourite characters from the series. I love Nemesis though, since Jill was my favourite character.
I do get some games for simple fun, but most of those are app games like Angry Birds these days.

Story is what gives me my motivation to play. Without it, a game is nothing more than an empty exercise in tactics and mind-body-coordination.

Heck yeah

Both. That is why I love the story but do not whine about small gameplay stuff that might not fit to the lore. They are there for the sake of enjoyable gameplay. You know - they're games after all.

Both but the story and characters are the main draw

Story and character charism

Mass Effect would be nothing without a good story, but the story would be difficult to tell without proper combat mechanics.

Neither.
I play games for characters. I don't care about gameplay, and the story could be the most cliche thing since Twilight, but if the characters are well done and well developed (well done meaning a Bioware character standard) then I'll happily play the game.
There's a hole in your theory.

Both, but I find I enjoy a game far more if it has a good story. Mass Effect does play well, but its not the best thing about Mass Effect imo, its the story that keeps me hooked. However, I wouldn't be happy if Mass Effect's gameplay was poor.

I'm obsessed with storytelling in all its forms. Video game stories in general have their fair share of problems, but I think they're getting better.
So, yes, stories are pretty much the whole reason I play games. I won't even consider buying one if it doesn't have some plot.

It depends on the game. For ME, definitely the story, but BF3 was for the gameplay - just fighting the AI from room to room.

Story. If I wanted to have fun doing repetitive hand movements for hours on end I'd just...uh, never mind.
There are exceptions, though. FFX-2 had an awful story but I played the hell out of it, both for trainwreck syndrome and because it was a ball.

If i want to play a game just for the mechanics or just to kill something, i play a FPS, if i want to play a game with an immersive story i play a RPG.

Story, definitely. If I can't get into it, then I usually don't enjoy the gameplay.

Definitely story. Nice gameplay definitely improves the experience but without story i've have little interest.

Story, though playability is important too. Part of the satisfaction derived from Mass Effect is achieving victories in the galaxy and completing missions, that in turn influence and progress the story. If the controls were clunky and the fighting a chore, I'd be less compelled to complete them, even if the story was engaging. Fortunately, Mass Effect delivers in spades.
But I'm mostly drawn to the universe, characters and events going on around me. Half my gameplay time is spent dicking around the Normandy or hubs, listening to chatter and immersing myself in the universe.

Story. A great story is the thing that makes the gameplay so much more enjoyable for me. And throughout my Mass Effect experience the story made me inertwine with the gameplay. I'd yell military orders at the monitor while giving orders to squadmates (for example I'd say "On me!" or sth when pressing C [the "form up" button in ME2] or "Check your ammo" while assigning ammo powers). When breaching a door, I'd actually stack up my squad on both sides of it, then toss a flashbang in and enter. I'd take care of my squadmates during battles, lay down suppressing fire for them etc. All because I felt genuinely involved with the story and characters.
Which only made the ending all the more painful.

Story. But functional gameplay is a must, and good gameplay is a plus.
I think the only games I play where I'm not concentrating on story are some arcade/puzzle games. Oh, and rhythm games. But mainly I'm an RPG player and I go where the good stories are - hell, Mass Effect is the only shooting game I've ever played, because I was willing to do it to get to the story.
