Wait. You are NOT saying the awful combat system of japanese rpgs is BETTER???

You speak as if all Japanese RPGs have the same combat system.

Which they do.

Look, I played: FF7, FF8, FF10, Lunar and its sequel, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile and its sequel, Legend of Dragoon, and I even gave a try to FF12. All of these games have a craptacular fighting system in my humble opinion.

You are way behind mate. You have only played a very, VERY  small portion of J-RPGs and only the "big names"  in that. Even between those games non has the same combat system as one another which leads me to believe that either you did no play them or you simply did not understand them at all to make full use of them. Especially Valkyrie Profiles and Tales series that have arguably the best combat system of any RPG game universaly especially if you happen to be in the real time/ semi-real time (which most RPGs both western and eastern are) combat fan.

As a player that plays both western and eastern RPG games equally i must say that Japan just offers by far a much more balanced, coherent and logical combat system than its western counterparts not to mention much more beautiful and graceful.

A matter of tastes, I guess. I think nothing can ever convince me that the gameplay of a japanese rpg is good or even acceptable.  :/

Then again, I have to sincerely admit that my hate for j-rpgs run so very, very deep, that I could not stand them even if they really had the best combat system ever.

Well thats too bad since you are missing out but its your call never the less. Still however, comparing them step by step with an open eye and mind Japan RPGs are just way ahead (combat and story presentation wise) than its western counterparts. The J-RPG combat system has so many intricacies for you to find out and combine and work out that its just insanely overwhelming. Easy to play but VERY hard to master (for the most part anyway).

At any rate Off-topic end.

If you want to try a nice J-RPG with a new flare to the combat you should try "The Last Remnant" :) It's a great game with a solid story. It's even got a PC version now thats even better then it's console counterpart :)

The only beautifull thing about Oblivion was the graphics. Morrowind was a GAZILLION times better than Oblivion and Dragon age was way better aswell. On a top RPG list dragon age and morrowind would be in the top 10 and Oblivion in the top 25 if lucky

It's probably worth comparing DA to Witcher more. I get the sense that people who like DA more so than Oblivion are interested in a particular type of game, which DA is, and therefore are unable to appreciate the value of Oblivion. They are both RPG style game but the intrinsic mechanic of role playing is significantly different, essentially given one makes you create a role while the other makes you follow a role.

If you compare DA to Witcher, in Witcher you get a very strong story (with twists), very strong characterisation of NPCs, you don't get companions following you about but you do get Lovers, hence also "Sex", and a novel fighting dynamic (specifically when playing "hard" and thus having to manage "potion" intake). You don't get "magic" to the same extent - which personally I don't care too much for anyway - and you don't get a "World", just a town - but given you don't really explore the world outside of fixed map locations in DA that's a meaningless difference.

Overall I found the Witcher a better game as it offered a more immersive experience: the very poor tactics and fighting in DA along with overly long dialogs that often went nowhere consistently broke immersion for me.

Oblviion had some very good moments and some very good characters and stories BUT Oblviion was like a Clearance Sale. Those very nice moments were buried in the midst of  ton of mediocrity and if you didn't look hard enough you could miss all the best parts.

I had to download mods just to make oblivion playable, like random enemy strength, I'm sorry, rats shouldn't level up with you.

also, that vampire quest was ridiculous, made oblivion unplayable, plus the AI was horrible, all the locations were the same, Oblivion was a huge dissapointment.

Dragon Age is everything I've been waiting for!

It's also got an even stronger case of T3h Railroading, as far as I could see.

The last Remnant...

Played the demo and HATED it. Looked good on the website, but...ewww. It was so "Arcady". Big numbers flashing up, some deep voice saying "TIME TO FINISH HIM!!!!!!" and stuff like that. I can't stand that type of game. All kinds of symbols and numbers flashing EVERYWHERE on my 22inch monitor. I felt like I was at a light show, except without the "cool" aspect.

Both have their strong and weak points...Still i wouldn't just say that Dragon Ages is better in every way. Oblivion's strongest point is the fact that it along with it comes a huge modding community and 4 fairly large questlines that have nothing to do with the mainquest (Mages Guild, Fighter's Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild), so far Oblivion takes the cake simply because its far more replayable (I generated about 300hrs+ on it after installing a massive amount of mods, 200 and counting). That and their latter DLCs - Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine were excellent.

On the flip side, DA excels at storytelling, immersing you completely into the plot and having intriguing companions, the world is definitely smaller, but your focus is on every tactic when you're in a fight, and on your companions when you're not. So far the DLCs for DA have been somewhat disappointing, but it took Oblivion about 4 DLCs before something worthwhile came up, lets hope Bioware conjures up something good for us all

I'm always preferring a storyline-driven RPG over a "go wherever you want" RPG. This makes me enjoy Dragon Age more thoroughly. Sadly, I think I got two friends to get it who probably won't enjoy it at all, or get fed up with it after a while.

Plus, I got party members that not only talk to each other, but are downright hilarious about it at times. Oblivion cannot even hope to fathom such interaction.

I think DAO plays like a movie. The story is definitely pushed onto you as there is little to nothing else you can do except to work your way through it.

Oblivion is a world which you are free to explore in whatever manner you so choose.

I personally like what Bioware has done with DOA but I also appreciate the freedom aspects of Oblivion. Both are good in their own ways.

Oblivion was so lonely compared to DA:O. I think DA:O is a much, much more entertaining game. Great story :)

This is so true, I was so excited when I got oblivion only to feel very lonely most of the times. In DAO you command a small unit, apart from driving the story for you pc. And the comments made towards each npc in the party is entertaining. Ogren was trying to hit on Wynne one time while in the deep roads.:P:lol::)

Overall, I do like DAO a lot more than the hundreds of hours I spent playing Oblivion. I do have to give Oblivion a point for one thing, though:

You could keep exploring after the last boss was deaded. The game didnt' slam a door in your face.

I agree with comparing DA to Witcher. I've played a portion of the Witcher and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, my computer is trash and can't handle that much awesome in my crappy tower. I wouldn't really say DA has poor fighting gameplay, that's one of the major reason people are playin, and hooked, to Dragon Age.

CM partners is a simple mod for Oblivion that does enable players to form a group. If someone were to make such a mod but more in depth - engaging dialogue etc then the world of Oblivion would not have that 'empty' feel to it.

Personally, take the story from DAO, the group/character system, put it into the Oblivion world and you would have one of the best games of all time. :)

Now, I have played through Oblivion a few times on both PC and Console version. And after playing Dragon Age for about a week I gotta say that Dragon Age is a better game overall.

The only thing Oblvion was better about was the freedom and how you could go anywhere and do anything. But, after a while you noticed that the monsters were the same, all the caves and forts were all the same. Plus the "leveling with you" system was flawed in my opinion.

Dragon Age's replayability is better, the gameplay is more challenging (not just hack and slash) and overall is a better game.

What do you guys think?

I played through oblivion precisely once.

I haven't been back.

I am now on my third playing of Dragon Age.

Oblivion was a left-click button bashing fest... Besides if you want an open ended world i'd go play an MMO, much more freedom in there.
