It's probably worth comparing DA to Witcher more. I get the sense that people who like DA more so than Oblivion are interested in a particular type of game, which DA is, and therefore are unable to appreciate the value of Oblivion. They are both RPG style game but the intrinsic mechanic of role playing is significantly different, essentially given one makes you create a role while the other makes you follow a role.

If you compare DA to Witcher, in Witcher you get a very strong story (with twists), very strong characterisation of NPCs, you don't get companions following you about but you do get Lovers, hence also "Sex", and a novel fighting dynamic (specifically when playing "hard" and thus having to manage "potion" intake). You don't get "magic" to the same extent - which personally I don't care too much for anyway - and you don't get a "World", just a town - but given you don't really explore the world outside of fixed map locations in DA that's a meaningless difference.

Overall I found the Witcher a better game as it offered a more immersive experience: the very poor tactics and fighting in DA along with overly long dialogs that often went nowhere consistently broke immersion for me.

What??!! You actually preferred the boring fighting in Witcher? Seriously? I never gone through the game because of that... I wish i had your patience... Heard it was a good story...

Boring fighting? You mean you got into the potion, bomb and weapon coating bussiness with toxicitys, night cycles and different combat skills as you leveled up and you found it boring? Usually the people who find the combat boring generally have not even went into the games capital city, Vizima.

Couldn't even make myself finish Oblivion. But I loved Fallout 3. Go figure. DA is better, for my tastes, than either, though I do think it falls short of ME and BG1/2.

Not that that's an insult, since I love those two games with an unhealthy passion.

Dragon Age easily rates higher than Oblivion for me.

I'm on my second play through of Dragon Age, where as I never finished Oblivion as it just felt like a chore after a time.

I guess I prefer rpgs where there are party members as opposed to you against the world. Maybe because the first rpg I played was Pool of Radiance (which was amazing), but having said that, Ultima Underworld was pretty amazing at the time as well.

cheers

I agree, didn't finish Oblivion either. Played probably a good 30-40 hours and kind of liked it, but it grew boring to me.

For me the cons were the first person melee, oblivion gates, too obvious level and equipment scaling, the main story didnt strike me as great and the fact a lot of the NPC's looked basically the same and had the same voice actors (if I remember correctly). I did like the graphics (except the movement looks a bit odd and stale, the same for Fallout3) and the open world though.

And I loved Fallout3 as well, but for me i think it was because it didnt have any of the problems that I had with Oblivion.

DA: O is IMO probably the best CRPG around, though I can't decide if it's better than ME or not... I think that in the big picture ME is better thanks to it being a part of a trilogy and since the game universe is more original.

FO3 fixed a lot of what was wrong with Oblivion, as well as having a more interesting world due to the setting. The actual FPS-like nature of the setting works a lot better than a melee-centric game in an FPS engine, too. For the first time, they had head shots! Unlike TES where sneaking up and putting two arrows in a random bandit's eyes... makes them irritated and charge me with their Daedric battleaxe.

Dragon age kicks all the ass tho. In my opinion, the only one compairable to Dragon Age was Dungeon Siege 2.

other RPGs, i can see their gr8, like borderlands and fallout but, i just cant get into them...

having said that, mass effect is F***ing awsome :D

Dragon Age is far superior. Oblivion was never that attractive to me, even though it is impressive in a lot of ways. Then I ran into a few oblivion gates and had to suffer through the Doom-like tedious gameplay in those and totally lost interest. Dragon Age has the Fade which is almost equally boring, but the rest of the game is fun enough to suffer through it.

Only problem with Dragon Age is lack of multiplayer, even BG had multiplayer. My wife herself proved to be a formidable player. Unfortunately, with her sitting on my lap for hours getting my legs numb while watching her play is simply... meh.

Either then that, Dragon Age has satisfied my expectations, and has even got my wife who I never knew would even like this game - to play it. Oblivion... meh, it's a classic, but Dragon Age is simply Bioware, and Bioware reigns supreme in RPGs.

DAO - much better story and combat is way more exciting.

Oblivion - Much more vibrant and interesting gameworld. Way better loot and more of it. Mods make Oblivion 100x better than the vanilla version.

I've enjoyed both games very much.

Oblivion bored me. I don't even consider it an RPG.

QFT. It's got fun parts in it, but it's more like they put Hexen in a massive massive map and added grinding, than an RPG.

Oblivion:

Graphics - in some ways breathtaking, but animation is horrible, and look at the faces compared to say half-life 2 or da:o - I remember starting the game one of my first thoughts was "why does Patrick Stewart have an oven ready turkey over his head?"

NPC interaction - shamefully thin and repetitive, and wth - a return to the bad old days of every NPC picking one of 17 phrases, almost regardless of the context.

Writing: shallow, glosses over everything with monosyllabic summaries, unengaging

Quests - lots of quests are chore-like, lots are repetitive

"massive world" - it feels like a tech demo. The same landscapes, the same creatures, the same awful awful animations of people, a quite limited amount of *real* variety.

Oh, and dropping dwarves etc  to have rainbow-coloured lizard people, puddy tat people and fluffy bunny rabbit people is great in a game as good as Morrowind, I didn't feel Oblivion could carry it off.

That said, I think DA:O is much more on rails than previous bioware RPG titles - things have been dumbed down a bit maybe, but the core gameplay is still there. The world feels cramped and small compared to the baldur games (boo!), regeneration has been made a bit easier ( fair enough, I suppose ) and lots of fedex type quests are miniscule compared to other games ( Hallelujah! Chores suck ). I can't wait for the first really big DLC, and the day when we get a bigger party.

PS: DA:O has elves, dwarves, magic and effectively orcs - you'll hear some people sneer that that is "sub-tolkien" - but you know what? I suspect that most RPG fans would be as comfortable with a few orcs and elves and dwarves in their game as I am.

Just my personal spin on it. Oblivion had some nice moments in it - I remember the first time I got caught in the rain in the woods while riding a horse, I actually slowed down so I could enjoy the relaxing experience for ten minutes - and it makes a cracking Magic FPS ( If you remember Heretic etc ) if you cook up your own spells, but I've clocked at best a third of the time on Oblivion that I have in DA:O

EDIT: Gah, I'm very sorry for digging this up, the dates were not very clear to me the way I was looking at this page initially.

you know, as i hear more and more about the baldur's gate series (i never played it myself), i think bioware would make loads of money by simply making a remake of it with next gen graphics.

Atari owns the rights to D&D, not Bioware, hence no BG3.

You'd have to redesign a lot of it anyway, especially BG1.

Ahhh in my opinion Dragon Age is much better than Oblivion. I didnt like the rather unattractive characters from the Oblivion character creator and also the lack of companions to interact with.  But it was a massive world and I pretty much did everything there.
The best thing about Oblivion was the cool, fantastic mod clothes you could get! Oh I just adored that Goddess shop! I bought everything! Of course I loved being able to buy a house in each town and being able to ride a horse too, but those boring tunnell quests...yawn...Image IPB (hehe)
Ahhh but nothing for me is as good as Dragon Age. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

While I love Oblivion I do agree, Dragon Age is better. Dragon Age may even be better than Morrowind.

One issue I have is that Oblivions level system is irritating and allows for a player to be god-like in every aspect. I dont need a kick-ass warrior who can also break into any building, sneak up on the enemy and magic the hell out of them. WAY too powerful. The only way for me to happily role-play the game is to pick 1 of the already created classes and play it as it is designed.

Oh, and as Cell1e stated above, the character's you create are no doubt the ugliest ****ing bastards in the land (pick a land, your choice).

Yes, luckily Dragon Age didn't have any of those.

I hate picking up chores from boards like in the Witcher, or having to find X flowers or Y demon blood.

Now, I have played through Oblivion a few times on both PC and Console version. And after playing Dragon Age for about a week I gotta say that Dragon Age is a better game overall.

The only thing Oblvion was better about was the freedom and how you could go anywhere and do anything. But, after a while you noticed that the monsters were the same, all the caves and forts were all the same. Plus the "leveling with you" system was flawed in my opinion.

Dragon Age's replayability is better, the gameplay is more challenging (not just hack and slash) and overall is a better game.

What do you guys think?

Oblivion was a major letdown; I'm still bitter over it.

Dragon Age is a RPG, oblivion was a landscape exploring game. I did not feel like "being" in the story (what story?). Oblivion was a major disappointment for me, even with loads of mods. It just lacked the immersive feeling. That's personal though, I can understand that some prefer freedom, I prefer a good involving story. That's all.

Personally, they are 2 different styles of game and I love both. Dragon Age has been great to just replay where as Oblivion (on PC) is a lot of fun to mod. I don't compare them myself, I say you should play both but don't expect the same thing from both of them, so no, I guess in my opinion DA is not > then Oblivion, they are = but not the same.

Morrowind gave a good part of freedom with a better scenario and not crazy auto level of the mobs. I hope TES V will go back to this.

Well, they're different for sure, they are not the same side of RPGs for sure.

I've found more replayability in Oblivion, although it has nothing on DA's character interaction. Both had a fairly "meh" story and combat system.

I feel that DA:O can stand a bit more on its own without mods, however. Oblivion only starts to get awesome when you mod the crap out of it. Plus Oblivion has a much larger history of content in terms of adventure mods and the like, while DA:O still is lacking in custom content (and even DLC).

I think I already posted in this thread, don't remember.

None of the Elder Scrolls games can top Daggerfall. Go back to THOSE systems and I'll be the happiest man ever!

This game is way better. I like a good story. They put so much work in the story that it blows my mind, and the voice acting is better. Oblivion is a different game. If you take away the fact that the characters have their own lives, the story is rather boring. FallOut 3 is better. but it falls short too. I played both of those games, but Dragon Age was the only one that actually gave me pause. I was liked I am really caring anout my character and his companions. That's good storytelling. I am not sure if that is good game making, but that is good storytelling.
