I'm running windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, when I try to run the character creator, I get the splash screen, hit play, and then nothing happens.
I've been through similar problems recently with Assassin's Creed and GTA IV, but was able to mostly fix them by running the executables in Administrator mode. (I can run them via deskstop shortcuts, but not directly from steam.. if there's a command line I can add to the steam launcher to fix this I'd love to know about it.)
I tried this with the DA char creator and still have the same problem.
I'm running a Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66ghz, 4 gigs of ram, and a Geforce 8800 GTX. I updated all my drivers and directx to the latest versions when I was fixing the problems with AC and GTA 4, which was about a week ago, and have since tried the nvidia 195.39 beta drivers
Please tell me I'm not gonna have the same problem with the full game when it unlocks?
Steam version of Character creator won't launch under windows 71

hey man, I have been using Windows 7 for a few months and I never had any problems running my games. The DA:O creator ran pretty well here but I have the UAC disabled.
To disable UAC using the Control Panel:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Under User Account and Family settings, click the Add or remove user account option.
3. Select a user account.
4. Click the Go to the main User Account page option.
5. Click the Change security settings option.
6. Remove the check beside the Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure option.
7. Click OK.
8. Restart the computer.
Hope that helps.

Worked fine for me with the same OS and UAC enabled. I'm running different hardware, but still Intel and Nvidia though. Not sure what to tell you. I know the first time I did it Steam had to run something that required UAC approval and then I had to Click something in a Steam dialog box after that. Maybe watch for that is all I can think. Or delete it out of steam and try again (or try the non-steam version).

oh, i've got windows 73, pfft. it's all the rage.
as for win7-64bit, it's fine. i would point to UAC or your antivirus settings,
as for me, the steam version took ... 4 restarts in steam to actually load the game, due to DRM 'game is not available', 'decrypting game', steam update released', and finally, a generic no-crash failure to load. it took about a half hour from the time i opened the game to actually get going with the game itself.
good times.
