Do people really follow the typical party lay out for this game.....Tank, Healer, Glass Cannon, Rogue type.....
I have yet to play with that group of people.....in fact I am about half done playing a game were I don't use a mage at all (it is hard so trust me I'm not bragging) and in none of my play throughs have I used a healer character (wynne, morrigan changed over to healer, or my own mage character).
I'm just saying, there seems to be so many people that complain that you have to use this or you have to use that as if you don't follow some cut and paste options the game in some way becomes impossible.
I have heard of people using three mages and a tank and just nuking the battle field and then stating in the same breath that maes in some way are over powered.
Am I the only one trying to experient with the party make up to see how I can change it up?

I currently play with one tank (DW), two rogues, one heavy hitter (pumped up crit chance with and a handy greatsword), based on the theory "dead enemy does not hit back".
It works so far, but to be honest, I had to lower difficulty to normal, as there were some encounters where didn't really matter what I tried. That was the high dragon on our favourite mountaintop.
And I like this kind of challange. Have to look out for grabs and interrupt them immediately, etc.

My first playthough was a dw warrior/Alistair/Wynne/Leiliana most of the time, so yes, standard setup, but also those were the characters I like most, with the exception of Sten (who I did use a fair bit.)
I'm mixing it up on my other playthroughs including not having a dedicated tank and not having a dedicated healer. I still prefer to keep a rogue in the party just for lockpicking.

I mix up my team constantly.
Can't say as I've ever had a glass cannon to work with, though.

I have a hard time without a sword&board (usually Alistair sometimes myself), a mage (usually Morrigan with perhaps Heal and/or Group Heal but nothing more with regards to Heal skills- basically just 'backup' safety), and a rogue (I love lovelove rogues, I've played through as a rogue twice now). I'm trying to expand my horizons, but it's hard!

My first playthrough was on hard with 2 tanks, rogue archer, and mage w/ only the first tier healing spell. I liked trading aggro between the tanks when one was in danger, it made things interesting without a real healer.
This time I think I'm going to go with 2 rogues (1 DW, 1 archer), a mage, and a 2hd warrior. Should be quite a change in play style. I'm trying out nightmare this time, so I expect to die a lot without a tank.

I really want to play it through with Rabbit (er, dog) but he just doesn't seem tough enough. :/

I always have at least one of each, usually 2 tanks. My usual party is dependant on my class, but for a rogue I have Me, Wynne (healer/basic damage mage), Ogren (2h tank) and Sten (2h tank) or Alistair (s/s tank). For a mage I have 2 tanks (same as above) but have either Zeveran or Leliana for crits and unlocks. When I have a mage that is not me I micromanage the AoE spells and put target spells in the tactics.
