Am i right in thinking the puzzle cant be manipulated if the demon goes hostile?

I think the only way out is to solve the puizzle. So it doesn't matter if the Demon gets hostile or not.

Not really. If you're stuck and decide to give up on the puzzle, you can click on Kitty and can initiate a dialog where you tell her you've changed your mind and decided to kill her, but you won't be able to rescue the girl.
