For me personally, tanking. If you love casting, they can certainly be exceptional at that, don't get me wrong, but so can Adepts and Engineers.
Now tanking, that's unique to the Sentinel class. Nobody else can stack two Armor powers to actually make a noticeable difference in damage resistance even on Insanity. Not to mention Lift Grenades are off cooldown entirely and Throw can be evolved to reset cooldowns if used as a detonator in Biotic Explosions, both of which complement a tanking build incredibly well. You can soak up massive amounts of damage compared to other classes, carry as many weapons as you want with no regard for weight penalties since they'll already be crazy with two armor powers stacked, and STILL have some CC powers to both set up and detonate combos in spite of all that.
If you go caster, they're just as deadly as the other caster classes, but tanking like that is unique to Sentinels.

Do both. You can have 2.5s Throws (basically same cd as Liara's Singularity) with Barrier/Defense Matrix and Tech Armor. 3.5s Warps, 4.5s Overloads as well. Pick a main weapon (Mattock, Vindicator, Geth Plasma Shotgun, Graal, etc, plus a Carnifex) You can achieve 70% DR and only 165% weight. 200% once you get weapons to X.
You can tank and can Warp->Throw Atlas/Banshee/Brutes effectively still. Throw+squadmate biotic for everything else minus synthetics which Chain Overload more than locks down.

not True
I stacked tech armor + defense matrix with chain overload and combo double throw
Had EDI and kaidan with me// Liara and EDI in Kaidan's absense
Reave / Singularity / Stasis + Power recharge double throw = no cooldown
I had a cool down of around 150% weight wise and 40% armor bonus wise
Could squeeze out a bunch of overloads when i really needed to do so :DD
lift nade + throw = self biotic combo

You can cast with at 4 second cooldowns on damage powers and get a 50% DR. I don't know why people think this isn't possible, but it does work and you can get from that build more power damage and force bonuses than any other class in the game. So while Adepts and Engineers can spam powers, they are in fact weaker in damage dealing potential than this type of Sentinel's, so the somewhat longer cooldowns end up being a wash. The Sentinel can also carries a lot more weight than those classes which, if you take advantage of it, makes them much deadlier in terms of weapon damage output as well.
I don't see the need to have 70% DR when I can get 50% and maintain the versatility of clearing levels with my entire repetoire of powers. If you are asking which type of Sentinel is best, I think the 50% DR caster is. However, the fact that the Sentinel has the best set of startting powers in the game makes them extremely versatile and capable of succeeding with many different types of builds, even those that forgo Tech Armor entirely. Yes I'm serious about that. In any case, those are just my thoughts.

50% DR - 800/0.5 = 1600 Effective Shield Points
70% DR - 800/0.3 = 2666 ESP
The same goes for health. So you actually have extra 2000 hit points with 70% DR over 50% DR.
Quite a difference. If you wanna go for tank Sentinel + weapons + Throw, 70% DR is a lot better than 50% DR. But your hybrid Sentinel works very well too as you can use more powers, and more often! Sentinel is such a versatile class. Love it in ME3.

This is so true. The pre-release hate for Sentinel has finally (I hope) gone to rest, it is absolutely my favorite class in ME2 and ME3... Tried Kronner's Tank Sentinel, it plays pretty well. I still prefer Caster Sentinel (that's what mine is in ME2) but Tank Sentinel with max loadout and throw CD reset bonus is also fun. Depends on your playstyle really...
Maybe one day people can start a thread and post their Sentinel build, will be pretty interesting to see how they're played.

Played as Tank in ME2, but with Dark Channel as bonus power I'm Caster all the way.
It's so overpowered I'm ashamed of myself. Dark Channel + Warp + Warp + Warp + Warp...

I kinda regret playing this class first as it killed my motivation to try other classes, so far I've only played soldier as another class. I went 40 DR+melee on TA, stasis as bonus and with that basis I could switch between armor and weapon loadouts depending on what I felt like doing, ariake set for shotgun+pistol, hahne-kedar with my revenant, armax if I'm using a sniper rifle. I've noticed posters try to exaggerate the cd penalty on TA, can't help to think they are just looking at numbers and never actually tried the class, wraith+paladin: 165% cd, revenant: 172%, black widow+tempest: 100% all at rank 5 except mods. It's ME1 all over again for me as this class is too versatile for me to consider alternatives.
