I have purchased the Dragon Age pc game and am attempting to run it under Ubuntu Linux using the CrossOver for Games software (v8.1.3).  When I click play, I get "Failed  to authenticate the disk.  Please insert the correct disk and try again."  I understand this has something to do with DRM.  I know other people are using CrossOver to play Dragon Age.  How do I do it?

It would have been a good thing for BIOWARE to do a Linux version of their product.  I no longer support Microsoft.

Those of you who are running Dragon Age under Linux, can you give me some pointers.

You could download the release candidate, play the game through, then go back to using linux without paying Microsoft a dime. Emulators can only do so much, so it's quite possible that you won't be able to get it working any other way.

Eep I meant the windows 7 release candidate by the way.

The only reason I keep a Windows partition around these days is for PC gaming. I was really happy to see Bioware release NWN on Linux. It sure seems like the DA engine is an extension of the NWN engine. I was really disappointed they did not release a Linux client, or at the very least, work with Wine/CrossOver to get it working in Linux via emulation.

DRM is almost always the stumbling block for getting Windows games running in Linux sadly. Again, paying customers are treated like criminals, where as the DRM does nothing to stop the pirates and is often easily circumvented.

+1 - this paying customer had to download a nocd crack in order to get the game to play on Linux :(

AFAIK, there is a WINE for Ubuntu, that ought to surpass Crossover, but that error message is generic, with a variety of causes.  It happens with good disks, and is probably related to the disk-check simple DRM mechanism, but openly referring to the no-CD exe files is just asking for vacation time from forum participation.

This article claims "DAO is now working properly under Crossover after the latest patches. " -

The DA engine is 100% new and doesn't have anything to do with the NWN engine - you should not expect things that applied to NWN to apply to DA.  Among other things, the state of Wine is light years ahead of where it was in the NWN days.

[edited to clarify my comment on the engine]

AFAIK, Obsidian radically overhauled the NWN engine for NWN2, and so did Code CD Red (is it Code Red CD ?) for The Witcher, and in neither case do you see anything like the primitive look of NWN-1 / KotOR. But yes, that is a fact, it's an all new game engine, but who said it wasn't?
