I don´t want a companion from DAO and DA2 to become one again in DA3 - I´d like fresh characters.
Characters from DLC´s though are a different matter, since we don´t get to explore them much in the short time we spend with them.
I too would love to see Finn again - love interest or not, I like having him ardound, mainly because of his humor. And since he´s not against the Circle it makes for a different view point in the whole templar vs. mages conflict.
Cullen would be great too, he´s one of the few characters who, by the end of DA2, have experienced both sides od the medallion - I really want to know which path he chooses from now on. He´s a great character.

Finn seems like one of the more plausible returning characters, it certainly doesn't hurt that he shares a voice actor with Sandal.  He also really tapped into my video game caring potential, I don't like to think of him being dragged off into a war I doubt he'd want to be a part of. Finn wasn't a rabble rouser after all and I want to make sure he's okay.  I'd like to believe he is the last mage left in the Circle Tower keeping to his books and or off traveling with Ariane and Dog.

As for Cullen, I don't really want him to be a companion, but if he were, I would want want him to get some closure with the female mage Warden.

Finn?

Considering he's a DLC character, alot of people probably would not know who he is. He'd have to be reintroduced.

Cassandra and Cullen as bisexual LI would be welcome and I'd like to add Feynriel to that list. Also, having Cole as a companion would be pretty awesome but, given his nature, making him a LI might get very complicated. Not that complicated is always bad, it's just in Cole's case it could get really bad for the PC... like Morinth bad.

That is a very good idea, I think Feynreil would make a very intersting romance charcater

I would like any "uncommon" race as a companion (as in, not a human, not a qunari, not an elf nor a dwarf), like shale was. whether that be a harpy, centaur or a demon.

We don't really have any idea what the Fex (native species of Par Vollen) are like. I'm curious, but since I don't really know anything about them, I'm not especially interested one as a compantion. I'd be interested in a demon, however.

Or a Warden going through the "change."

There'd be a whole community of people demanding that he be cured and prevented from having to go to his Calling.

Then, when he isn't cured and dies in the sequel, they'd all claim BioWare betrayed them.

Probably so.  That word 'betrayal' gets thrown around a lot lately....

EDIT:  Instead of spamming the thread, I'll just throw it the edit.  I'm completely on board with Finn coming back.  A spoiled, know it all nerdy mage with a bad sense of humor....works for me!Posted Image

It'd sound like much less of a problem if the friendship dialogue was way too romantic for certain gendered protagonists and makes assumptions about a relationship that might not be there. Like, a woman who treated them with near-total disdain getting that same dialog would have their character and relationship more broken than the "problem" of only having the dying Warden kiss them and dedicate their death prayer to her while simulatenously managing to have a critical role in the mainplot despite their advanced illness and logic.

Thankfully, there is absolutely no way for one to portray your character as having near-total disdain for the Warden and his condition, thus the only problem being presented to the player is their head-canon being violated. The romance, however, does exist and does progress the character's development simply to be abandoned in the sequel.

When the Warden's prayer is dedicated to their friend, "friend" or lover, the over simplification of dialogue and ignoring of any romance can rightfully be considered a "betrayal", of the character or the player and has little to do with the Warden's death in general.

Those who feel nothing but disdain for the Warden can simply not talk with them.

Maybe we should just not have slowly dying characters at all.  They're lame to begin with.

Depends how they're handled, which this hypothetical Warden happened to be done poorly.

I originally brought in this concept,, but I wasn't thinking of this character as an LI.  More of Wynne/Sten type character.  You could make him/her an LI, and there is something really sweet about that, but I was thinking more of a tragic non-LI who your character can pity, hate, trust, or mistrust as he/she slowly starts to lose themselves to the taint.  From a writing standpoint, this can a be a strong companion.  Making this Warden a LI....I dunno.   Not every companion has to be a love interest.

The best decisions in games have an effect not only on the narrative but on some aspect of game play, and I'd like it if who you decided to romance was one of those decisions. I always thought it would be cool if there was some kind of stat bonus associated with activating a romance with a character akin to what you get from getting deep into friendship or rivalry territory. Say you have your LI with you in your party, it makes sense that they would feel especially protective about you so maybe if your PC's HP sank below 25% they'd enter a "rage mode" and do increased damage while their MP or AP refilled at twice the normal rate. They'd also have unique battle cries for when they entered this mode. Just something to personalize the experience a little further.

Oooo now that I like! Each individual romanceable companion could come with their own "talent" that becomes active once you've cemented a romantic relationship with them and comes into play during battle (like the rage mode thing you mentioned if t he PC's health is below a certain percentage) their "talent" could also be unique based on what class he/she is. One thing I liked about DA2 is that your LI did have a unique battle cry if you died, Anders' one was particularly heart breaking.

Now these are great suggestions!

Cause I'm sorry, if there's a battle going on and your LI fell, I'm sure you would run to their side. I would be nice to see something happen to that effect as talent wise.

That is an awesome idea.

Also, I looked at the Wiki for Dragon Age, just looking through some dialogue for romances and such.  It turns out that when Hawke falls in combat, Anders has a panic line...has anyone actually heard it? I want to go back in game and hear it and I've never noticed what they say when Hawke falls.

Yeah all of those are sad.  I think Anders's voice actor in DA2 is really good.  It made me even more angry when the climax came and I was like "DAMMIT ANDERS!"

Just curious what others have to think about this.  It is important to note that I'm not the biggest fan of Romances in RPGs, mostly because I find that they just seem kind of off (Sorry David... :bandit:).  Usually I come away enjoying them, but it's the other aspects of the writing that a typically really like.

One of my favourite romances, though, came from Planescape: Torment.  Anyone that has played Planescape: Torment can probably understand where I'm coming from (I strongly recommend it.  Some of the best writing in fiction as far as I'm concerned), but I'll describe it a bit for those that may not have played it.

The one I am thinking of is with a succubus named Fall-From-Grace.  I find her a very deep character and a caring and compassionate one to boot, which is interesting because she's a succubus!  The PC and FFG are able to become close, but ultimately the relationship can never be truly consumated given the fact that she's a succubus.  I found it fascinating to have such an interesting character that I feel has such great chemistry with the PC, but ultimately the outcome is tragic because they're never able to express it in a physical way.

I also find it refreshing in that it's unique; most relationships in RPGs tend to have a clearly defined "win condition" of being in the relationship, often portrayed by a scene depicting an intimate encounter.

I think that, in general, a romance like this would probably meet some resistance in a BioWare game based on our game catalogue and how we've done romances, but I thought it'd be interesting to see what BSN's take on it was.

Cheers!

This. Let kick teenage dream romances out of RPGs.
