I think the Qun seems quite sadistic and oppressive.
The fact that they leash their mages and sew their mouths shut is quite barbaric! And that they have no choice in what they do in life.
So many things are disturbing about their beliefs!
Isn't there a breeding programme or something for Qunari? That they don't believe in love, and the children are raised by their priests?

Imagine that bees were sentient, communicative creatures. Now explain to one that it's beehive society structure is wrong.

Do you think beehive structure would be the same if the drones were intelligent? Drones participate because they don't realize they're going to be kicked out of the hive at the end of the year and die to the cold.

Moreover, you're assuming that the Qun is an expression of kossith nature, as opposed to one of many possible social orders. There's no evidence for that.

Yes, and everyone knows that the Qunari make terrible honey!

And Sten looks awful in black and yellow!

.... why isn't your analogy a perfect parallel of the Qun?

And moreover, what right do you have to judge bees?!

I'm glad bee's aren't intelligent, I've seen those B-movie horrors... Last thing you want is bee's storming your town, raping and pillaging!

Actually, I think Thane is an exception to this. I don't recall anyone complaining about his religion or the small prayer Shepard participates in.

Thane's religion has no context. It is the names of a few gods and a few spiritual ideas. We have no idea what the Drell actually do based on these beliefs. We don't know how their ideas about spirituality influence their politics or their society. We don't know how their concept about the duality of the soul and the body affects their system of ethics, how they deal with matters of crime or justice. There's nothing there to judge other than the fact that he believes in gods and an afterlife. Which is pretty innocuous on its own.

You have that context for Andrastianism and the Qun.

Do bees rape? Qunari are much scarier, and I'm not even sure that they're allowed to rape. Image IPB

That's a good point. It's less a religion, as in a sociohistorical entity, and more a flavoring for a specific character.

Why do you think that religious characters are sometimes poorly received? (If you agree with David, that is.)

I'm fascinated by the Qunari, even as I'd be scared witless to be made to live according to their doctrine.

The Qunari shove the honey down your throat whether you like it or not.

I like their doctrine of accepting people regardless of their race though (one of the few that doesn't bother me). I loved the banter that Shale and Sten had about whether the Qunari accept golems.

I wonder if oppression would taste better than despair?
I agree that learning more about the different religions would help us understand the Dragon Age world better.

As opposed to a modern, Western existence or as opposed to a mud farmer in Orlais? Because I can't see any society in Thedas as being better than my real life, but I imagine the qunari way of life might be better for the average person in Dragon Age.

Being a mud farmer in Orlais could be a fine existence... Y'know, what with the naked mud wrestling 'n' all. Gotta love those debauched Orlesians!

We should have a companion that's a bee.

No, seriously.
And then a Qunari companion that lectures him on duty and self-sacrifice.

The last time I was at a county fair, there was a a competition where they greased up pigs, put them in a muddy stall, and guys ran around trying to catch them.

I imagine that's family entertainment all over Orlais.

I think it could apply to both today's society and Thedas. I can't see it being better than our society today but in Thedas, I see some societies that I might prefer the Qun over but it would not be my first choice. Although the Qunari philosophy has a certain comforting aspect to it, I just can't accept being told what I must do with my life. That I might want to be a painter but I'm not allowed to because my "role" is that of field worker. It was decided and I have no choice and thus I'm doing what someone else says I should with my life? I would not accept that. Now given a choice between death and that then I probably would - I will fully admit that. Or between a life, of some sort, versus slavery. Who knows? Maybe I could paint in my spare time. :) But I just could not choose that life of my own free will because I desired it. Personally, I'd be alright having a tavern somewhere. Or a freehold. Orlais can suck my toes. :D
