I just wanted to make a comment on the part I bolded. I see this term thrown around alot, just what is wrong with knowing what your fans want and catering to your core fan base? That is one thing that has made BioWare games so great in the past.Allan Schumacher wrote...

That's fair feedback. Perhaps people were more upset that they couldn't respond appropriately, and would have felt better about the situation if they could have responded better in game.
Or, maybe we just need to understand why people enjoy the romance options in game and understand that the setting is still fantasy. That doesn't mean being excessively fan servicey and allowing everyone to be romancable, but recognizing that people have different expectations in video games than they do from reality.

Because rabid forumites aren't always the mass consumers of a particular game. So just because we think it's best,it may not be. There's what- thirty or forty people on this forum, at most, who come here on a regular basis to talk about DA3. Not just the three months before and after a release. I think catering to their hardcore forum fans with everything might be doing the game a disservice because certain ideas may not be easily accesable/understandable by the entire market. Or whatever.
Though, if putting Cullen in as a LI is being excessively fan servicey, I'm totally okay with it.

I agree with Avejajed. I think a really great example of this is Isabela.
Isabela was an amazing npc in DA:O and companion in DAII. Love the character. One of the reasons she was so amazing is because the writers seemed to just love writing her - they were inspired to tell her story, and her story fit perfectly in the world of DA and the events of the second game.
Now, imagine the writers hadn't had the lightbulb moment that inspired Isabela's character. It'd just be a matter of time before someone would be all "OMG PIRATES! We should have a PIRATE in DA!" and then a few more people would jump on board, and someone would add "Oh yeah, and she should be all easy and barely wear any clothes. A pantless pirate mmm.... she should be one of the LI's!"
If the devs had picked up that idea and written that character to serve the fans, she probably would have been terrible. That's what fanservice is - giving the fans what they ask for at the risk of it not actually having any spark of developer creativity or feeling of belonging in the game.
Do I love that the devs check these boards and listen to our suggestions? Heck yes -- some of the ideas I've seen from fans are, in my opinion, fantastic. But even if a 5 million of us wanted a zombie Duncan to come back from the dead, that doesn't mean it would actually be an improvement on the game. That's fanservice.

Do you want to know what fan service is? Fan service is having he female character in the anime flash her panties so a bunch of dirty minded boys can drool over it. And when it's character writing instead of drawing of half naked girls, it's still just as stupid. Fan service breaks stories. It's cheap, silly, unnecessary, and we'd all be better off without it. In all of its forms.
Except in the form of Cullen, you mean.

def need more romance
need more great friendships
I was jealous of the friendship Ava Isa Merril had. They were priceless together... But as Hawke, you were an outsider looking in.
Wish you had something with them, special missions that involved nothing more than you and a companion trying to get out of trouble or cause some in a bar somewhere, then ending up with a big fight cause you ticked someone off. Maybe you cant deal with all of it and your party has to come and save the 2 of you... etc. Friend events as quest and romance events as quest would be a great idea. Like imagine you have to actually romance you LI. Ex) You want to romance Aveline, but you need a certain type of flower that's her favorite, but it only grows on a certain mountain side. Then you need to cook her favorite meal, but you can only get a certain meat or have to buy a recipe from a certain tavern or restaurant to get the flavor right. Depending on how many task you do, depends on how far the relationship goes. It can be a gameplay mechanic and add more story. This would help us as gamers feel we actually did something with or for our L.I. and provide more immersion. Imagine actually trying to date your companion in the game? You instead of getting just a text option to flirt, that part only initiates it. You must then go on a date and say or do the right things to progress. What I speak of would be a complete overhaul of the Romance system, but DA3 could breathe some life into the DA series in all aspects.
I really like this idea. I'd also like it if it were reversed. Say you show an interest in a companion... if they are insterested then they can woo you right back. I think it's only fair.
I think that would be amazing!

EDIT: Also, what's so great about Cullen? Maybe it's just the fact that he looks and acts like my older brother, but I don't understand what's so great about him.

- I want another Quanri companion. I missed having one in Dragon Age 2, particuarly with their new look and importance in the story.
- I want more conversations, longer conversations, and the ability to speak to my companions whenever (not necessarily wherever) I want.
- The friendship/rivalry system in DA:2 was an improvement, but It's still not just there yet. If I keep calling Morrigan a heartless shrew she shouldn't become a rival, she should just hate me and refuse to help me anymore. The line between rivalry and just plain not liking somebody should be more clear and well-defined.
- As the OP said, It's all well and good to have deep characters with interesting backgrounds, but characters don't need to bring up their tragic past or lifelong cause every other minute to be interesting. It's alright to have issues, but they should not be the sole source of conversations, or the only thing we talk about (overall lack of conversations and conversation options in DA:2 also ties into this) Sometimes more simple conversations can be just as rewarding as the deep ones.
- I disliked that in Dragon Age 2 we could only find some pieces of information about a characters past or life by reading about it in the codex. We should be able to hear it from them themselves/ talk about it, even if it's only in idle dialogue or party banter.
- DA:2 really took a step forward in terms of party banter, and I hope that DA:3 follows this trend.

also, what makes a spirit of a deceased mortal inherently different from a fade spirit like justice or valor or even a demon?
now that i think about it, the baroness on awakenings did turn into a pride demon so i surmise that there isn't much difference between ghosts/demons/spirits.
so....loghain possessing cullen as an LI?
just blew the minds of both loghain and cullen's fangirls/boys.

I don't think they go to the Fade, exactly. Otherwise mages who know the Fade well would be able to solve the mystery of what happens after death by being like "yep, Jerry's in the Fade. The Chantry's a fraud." Instead, anyone's best guess about what happens when you die is that you go "to the Maker's side." whatever that means.
But as for Cullen possessed by anyone, especially Loghain.... I really appreciate the thought but....

i won't spoil but there's a certain witch of the wilds that is able to reach out to the fade and bring back the spirit of someone who recently died to get some answers
