Did anyone actually feel the defeat on Thessia at Kai Leng's hands?

 I didn't feel defeat, I felt annoyed.

He brags about how awesome he is, but the only reason he won is because he brought a gunship.

If it were him and a few phantoms against myself, Liara and Garrus it would have ended exactly like it did at the Cerberus base.

And it's not even so much that he brough a gunship, as much as the gunship had an incredibly bright flood light attached to it that made it impossible to see. I'd bet I could have taken him with the gunship if it hadn't been for that.

To be fair, it took five people to stop him from killing one counselor, and he was on his own then.

again plot armor + cut scenes

If you are going to make someone seem unbeatable then do so in the game, nailing him in 3 shots is embarrassing...

When the games forces me to lose and pretends is my fault that irks me, plenty of RPGs forced me to lose in the past, and I didn't mind because the situation was TRULY hopeless.

Halo: Fall of Reach last stand did a better job at this.

Not at all. Kai Leng didn't even hit anyone and then the cutscene powers take over and he's some badass. Always hate that in games.

I felt sad because it was hit pretty hard however I did feel that Shep's reaction was a bit much. It was more like he was throwing a tantrum to me, felt out of character.

I disagree, I thought his reaction was perfect. I mean, with the end of the world on your shoulders, any person would buckle, no matter how optimistic they are.

Well this is why one reaction shouldn't be forced in an RPG. You think it's perfect, while I think it's completely ridiculous to have not prepared for the possibility/eventuality of defeat.

Nevermind the cutscene, the fighting sequence itself was frustrating. I mean I can't shoot down the gunship because... oo00oh, bright lights from gunship!!1 The whole sequence was ridiculously contrived. I mean I shot down a gunship in other Mass Effect games, and here I can't even target it? Or damage it?

I lost shields a couple of times only because I tried killing the gunship. Then realized I just had to blast Kai Leng in the face a couple times and--oh, losing cut scene, even though I just won. Why does my Infiltrator Shepard keep taking out a crappy pistol and not a sniper rifle? Sigh, it sucked on so many levels.

I felt the loss very keenly, and liked it a lot. But I know that I get immersed very, very easily. Usually require very little immersion factor to get all the way into a book or a game, so impressing me isn't all that hard.

I didnt realize Kai Leng defeated me, I always thought it was the gunship that was firing rockets at me.

I'd have overlooked all of the shortcomings, had the endings (should've been plural, at least) had been worthy of the series. On the initial playthrough, it was more a growing sense of unease in the back of my mind, than a conscious "wow, this is weak", until the stupefying ending.

Now think of losing Thessia through the battle for Earth a crack in a walnut shell that is containing the walnut of dissapointement.
Now imagine the endings being someone driving a hammer through that crack at full force.

Remember Calo North in KotOR? Kai Leng was just a deja vu for me. Enemy that is introduced as super badass, plot armor applied on one or two encounters, then eventually goes down. I found him annyoing, that's all.

Yeah, it's good to see it wasn't just me.

That part felt WAYYY too forced, it actually really stuck out at me cause of how much it contrasted with all the other moments leading up to it that were done far better.

I didn't lose to Kai Leng... I lost to his gunship. When you actually get to fight him near the end he's such a pushover.

Shepard lashing out at Joker was okay with me, but the auto dialogue started to get really annoying. Especially near the end of the game. They took too much freedom away from the player when it came to Shepard's personality. I wanted to play my Shepard as cracking under the pressure, but I would also like to play a stoic, or sociopathic Shepard  as well.

Apparently this assassin needed a gunship.  Blech.  He was such a joke.  And I agree - big pushover.

I liked it, I liked how my Shep got pissed and wanted to tear Cerberus apart

That said I was dissappointed with how easy the boss fight was.  KL just seemed like a brat to me, he constantly is trying to mock shep as he is getting his *** handed to him

I did. (When the asari was trying to radio Shep but she couldn't hear her voice) Not because of Kai Leng but because I couldn't save the people

I felt similarly. I was also a little unhappy that Cerberus stole the final ingredient for the Crucible from me, after I'd told all those people on Thessia that we could save them.

Throwing immortal boss fight late in the game is silly and unfulfilling.  All that power and level you built up meant nothing.  If I can shoot down harvester why can't I shoot down his gunship backup

The way this scene was originally supposed to play out in the leaked script was wayyyyyy better. Much more brutal and menacing, and you truly would feel as though you lost.

What happens in the leak?

Also, I really felt the loss and I made my Shepard take it out on Joker. I really was hurt by that defeat, and his email just made me scream "This dude needs to die painfully"

Can we get a link or elaboration for those of us who didn't read the leaks?

Not at all, if it weren't for his "cut scene powers of awesome" and Shepards "cut scene powers of standing here looking stupid" he would have never made it past the first encounter. I would have biotic charged him, knocked him on his ass then fed him as many shotgun blasts as it took to make sure he wasn't moving.

Taken from the IGN Mass Effect board...

"The "Kai Leng kills either VS or Liara" was the original plan for the Thessia fight. In this early version, Kai Leng had already staked out the temple before Shepard arrived and was waiting for him to show up so that the Prothean VI would show itself to him. When you fight Kai Leng and start beating him, he didn't call in a gunship like what happened in the final draft; instead he pulls out a remote detonator and blows up a massive bomb he'd already planted in the temple. Shepard gets impaled by a piece of steel and the two squadmates, Liara and VS, are severely injured by the blast. Kai Leng grabs the VI and runs off.

Shepard then only has enough strength to pull out the metal beam and to crawl to one of the squadmates. If you do nothing, you die because the floor collapses under you (this part made it into the final product, when Shepard has to climb up the collapsed floor). By the time you make it to your chosen squadmate, Cortez shows up to evac you. You escape just as a Reaper arrives and blows the temple to smithereens, and with it, the squadmate you abandoned."

felt very forced, like the 2 chase scenes.
My revenant and powers should have had a much bigger impact on dr. eva and kai leng.
With the shadow broker they at least put up some machine inside his ship to explain his strong shields.

Absolutely.

Firstly, the Prothean was in fact crucial to the story, originally the Prothean was supposed to extract information from the temple and he enters a sort of stasis as he does so (there was no prothean VI).  As he does so, Kai Leng shows up.

THIS is originally where the VS standoff occurs, as Kai Leng roots them against you (because you originally had to kill one of the VS's teammates back on Eden Prime, because he was about to kill the Prothean, thus Kai Leng finds out and feeds this information to the VS.)  So you either talk the VS down or have to kill them.

The same fight then ensues, but rather than a gunship, he sets off a bomb as you are about to defeat him.

The bomb blows up, the floor starts to collapse, and Shepard gets impaled by a piece of rebar and is critically wounded.  Your teammates (VS and Liara, as was indicated in the leaked script) are also badly injured, and you have to crawl towards them to save them, but you can only save one.  By the time you reach one, the floor gives out on the other and they die (Virmire 2.0)

Kai Leng then grabs the unconscious Prothean and escapes him with on his shuttle, giving you an evil smile as your surviving teammate helps you out of the temple.

Edit:  @Tsemaru, the IGN board may have seen a more updated version (probably when they cut the Prothean from the game and made him DLC), but originally there was no VI, just the Prothean himself.

this exact part of the game completely convinced me that the ending was going to be pleasing to me. i thought well, this is the part of the game that makes me feel like ive failed and lost or doomed, but then something would happen and id save the day regardless. kindof like the feeling virmire gave me. just very real, and desperate.

but that only lasted a few hours untill i played the ending and felt like someone just pooped on my face anyways.

... Why did they have to change to scripts again? Because they wanted Javik to be DLC or something? That leaked script would have been a much better encounter than what we got. I'm actually really starting to hate BioWare at this point.

the scene with kai leng and the phantoms in the elevator, enough time to hurl a grenade in there just before the doors close... but noooo, shepard just looks at him for seconds.
