Did anyone actually feel the defeat on Thessia at Kai Leng's hands?

fall of thessia hit me pretty hard but it felt forced......... i mean............. you saw all the other worlds burning including your own why was thessia any different?

then to be defeated by a super manga ninja with biotics who has a gunship then some how instead of destroying the roof it destroys the floor? pffft really........................... i wasn't upset afterwards because of thessia really was more pissed at the fact that you were forced to lose to this retarded lol.

Yeah, honestly this is one of the few parts of the game I have a problem with. During that and the following scenes I was like "Am I supposed to be feeling something right now? Because I ain't feeling anything."

Thessia....that "boss fight" was one of the most infuriating I have ever played. I destroyed gunships left and right in Mass Effect 2 and now ONE appears with a space ninja thus Shep MUST be doomed to failure......

Also never felt it.

Thessia is unreasonably written as a breaking point for Shepard while I (the player) was just sitting there, feeling next to nothing. It was like the game was constantly shouting at me "This is sad and depressing!".
Forced emotion that didn't reach me at all.

....The last piece of the crucible, the divice need to stop the reapers , is gone and your not upset?

I felt like it was more of a setback than the crushing defeat that it apparently supposed to be.

The problem with it was that it was obviously scripted. An invincible, unbeatable, untargetable gunship? Of the same kind that Shepard can take down with *small arms fire* in ME 2? Kai Leng being cool about it instead of desperate? Calling the gunship in just because his shields have been stripped, instead of being obviously at the edge of defeat?

It could have been presented much better.

I felt a bit sad at loosing Thessia, but I did not lose to KL, I was kicking his ass and I was beaten by an untargetable gunship and 'Mister Cut-Scene Invincibility'...

That...is a good point.  Lang only gave the order to fire.

There were many things Bioware could have done to improve the Kai Leng boss fight.

Failing to overthrow the Citadel could have inspired TIM to implant Leng with more advanced Reaper tech, giving him biotics and possibly resulting in some crazy story elements for the endgame.

Heck, give him a GUN! The Kai Leng of Retribution used firearms...

Have him call in troops, have the gunship provide overhead fire (akin to the Donovan Hock fight), but allow us to be able to defeat the darn thing! Once all avenues have been exhausted and Kai Leng knows he cannot win, then blow the frakken temple up. And, gosh, remove the stupid e-mail! I mean, come on! It was childish...

But just giving us an improved phantom with an annoying god-mode and invincible gunship was NOT good enough!

in the original script he kills one of your squaddies, depending on who you want to save. he pretty much beats Shep to death, blows up the cathedral, and one of your squaddies also dies.

now i prob would've felt some thing had that happen. instead, as you are about to beat him comfortably, he pulls some cutscene BS, and escapes. And all 3 of you escape unharmed. Lame to the max.

I would just makeup your own dialogue.  But Kal Leng is a wuss so he had to run away.  It happens in movies also.

Kal Leng - I decided to send you an e-mail because I don't know how I got your info but going to try to make you feel bad
Liara - I am going to make you feel bad Shepard because you still didn't do enough to save my planet
Shepard - I have to feel sorry because I care too much for Liara and doesn't matter if she makes me feel bad
Liara - I need to continue to make Shepard feel bad until I feel better about myself

Leng was a butthole. "Space ninja" REALLY? really, Bioware? *sigh* He was nearly as bad as that moany-hole elf in DAII. Can't remember his name but he looked like he got lost on his way to a Final Fantasy audition.

You know what's a good weapon to go up against heavily-armored space-badasses with guns? Swords! Duh! There's a reason they never became obsolete in military hist....what's that?........stupid, you say?........ashtray on a motorbike......I see......ok then.

To be fair, The mission on Thessia did fit in with the overarching theme of inevitable, crushing defeat at the hands of a poorly thought out character spouting complete bull****.

True. His character just didn't fit into the world of ME, at all. Right from the beginning he stuck out like a sore thumb, in a bad way. :?

UGH! Tell me about it... Liara totally pissed me off at around that point.

"SHEPARD! That used to be an asari! Ohh, it's so horrible!"

In my mind, I'm thinking, "Really? You see countless human husks and barely bat an eye, but an asari makes you sympathetic?"

And then there's:

"SHEPARD! My beautiful world! Everybody is dying! All hope is lost!"

"Really? Earth, Palaven, Khar'shan, Irune, Dekuuna, and many colony worlds are currently being obliterated, but losing Thessia breaks you? What, did you think the Reapers would just forget about the Asari? That their increased lifespans, beauty, philosophy, diplomacy, and art would somehow make them immune?"

Ugh, Asari can be so annoying...

Yeah, I felt it. Huge cornerstone of culture and history, knowledge and art -- the birthplace of an entire race -- lost. Liara's reaction helped, as well.

Asari can be very annoying, and I agree she didn't even care about those other planets.  Remember how she felt at first about Javik?  She was all excited about him then found out certain things about him and got upset.  Liara even helped find Shepard's body so she needed to cut Shepard some slack.  Liara was even the woman I romanced.  But at times that relationship felt messed up even before going to her homeworld.

Look, the Asari scientists, their throats have been slit. Oh well, lets just find the package, because whoever did this is long gone I am sure.

Am I the only one who instantly knew who committed this act of murder on the first playthrough?

No, what BW should have done was let Kai Leng throw everything at the player until the player ends up dying then cue the cut scene of Kai Leng being successful. Of course fans will still complain about how they played the mission forty times and still can't beat Kai Leng. lol! But atleast it wouldn't cut you off to give Kai Leng auto victory.

A lot of hate in the past year, I wonder how many of them were honest?

I felt the defeat and loss of Thessia because I was absolutely engrossed in the narrative and had absolutely no idea what to expect. (to be fair I avoided BSN like the plague when a game is 6 months out due to spoilers ruining the experience for me.)

At this point in my very first playthru (was one for the ages) I thought Cerberus was still just stupid and misguided - but when the prothean VI said 'indoctrinated presence detected' my heart SANK because we were screwed and events were playing themselves out exactly like the previous cycle.

I felt the loss of Thessia and I didn't feel 'defeated' per se by Kai Leng, but he robbed me of victory, cost millions of lives (including the Asari who fought valiantly to get me to that point) and damn... i felt it.

I've read many of the posts here and am envious (and a bit bewildered) how people could be so cooly detached from the narrative and yet rage so hard when it did things they didn't like.

I think Bioware had the right idea in making Thessia be a canon defeat for Shepard. The player shouldn't have an option to win every battle, and the hero needs to stumble occasionally otherwise you're left with a thoroughly uninteresting Mary Sue.

That being said I don't think the Thessia boss fight was well handled.
