Now, many of us can agree that the motivations for the reapers in ME3 was nonsensical.
First let me explain that regardles of whether or not you believe in IT or LBT or CWT the point still remains that the star child lied to Shepard. I'm not going to go into spoiler mode, but I will say that since he lied about that thing, isn't it possible, or indeed probable that he and that reaper lied about their motivations.
Basically my theory boils down to, reapers' battery lives (for lack of a better term), run out, and they need to obtain both organic material and advanced technology to either reproduce, or create new casings for their AI to go into.
I was considering going into depth about what I think their history is, but that would be a four page long post and possibly contain spoilers.

Or, Bioware's due date came and they pushed something out quickly with not enough time to think it through.
Sad reality is sad.

Though oddly enough, this only took me 5 minutes of thought to create. I was just using my limmited knowledge of technology and what we've learned about the reapers from ME (they power down for 50,000 years in dark space, they only attack advanced civilazations) and ME2 (they are partially organic, they use the people they kill to make new bodies).
