The Soldier class is not irrelevant.

On Silver we bottlenecked the Reapers and all I did was spamming Proxy Mines and scoping.
Was quite fun.

The problem isn't that soldier isn't viable or that he can't do well in gold. The problem is that any role the soldier could possibly fill, another class does it better.
I wouldn't mind adding 5 minutes to a game so someone can have fun with thier favorite class. Some folks don't think this way obviously, but many do. The unfortunate reality is that if you want to play soldier in gold, you will need to do a little extra work. Make some friends who enjoy the game, and do not look at it like a grind.
Most of the time people who kick are looking for speed runs and they have a right to do it. you just need to find some folks who are more interested in the social aspect.
I rarely play public games, I play with friends from real life so I've never known the (I imagine) terrible feeling of getting kicked just because I want to play a krogan. I would just like to be as useful as my friends that play adept or infiltrator.
i would argue that you proabaly are very useful to them , or they would be having trouble beating gold. If you were a detriment then i am sure they would ask you to change classes. The only difference i see in playing a soldier or another adept is just the amount of time it takes good players to finish a game, and 5 minutes is not a lot of time in the grand scheme of things.
As far as being just as good, not all classes/races can be the same. How you account yourself on the soldier is what most folks look at. just my opinion , I know where you are coming from , but thats the breaks my friend.

I'll agree with the Adrenaline Rush thing. It mainly bugs me because the final evolve says 50% shield strength(Which I'm fairly certain it does that in SP), but it doesn't do anything close to that in MP.
AR does give you 50% shield boost. You only get the boost when you first activate it.
I think once I level up my GPS more I will change it so that I get the 20% weapon weight bonus on the Alliance Traning instead of the +10% on the damage. Right now my cool down for AR is about 5 secs. Which isn't long but maybe with the weight bonus I can get it down to 3 or 4.
I don't know though, I am all about the weapon power, and I like that I can take out a Marauder/Gaurdian (on silver) in a single fully charged shot when I have AR active with all the weapon attack boost.

I have a strong suspicion that it gives you 50% of base shield strength, so 250 shields. Since fully upgraded fitness gives you 800-something, you end up getting less than 1/3 of your shields back.

I played like 4 games with my soldier last night. It recharged have my shield half way back each time I activated it.
Your not invincible when you activate this power, so any damage you take will be deducted immediately.
EDIT:
I think one thing that would make this class more usable is if they made it were you would get 50% health and sheilds back when AR is actiavated, or 100% for one or the other.
I think alot more people would use the class then IMO

So you think that team would be better off with a Human Engineer that disrupts biotic combos?
Not being "optimal" is not the same as being the worst and garbage.
He's the weakest class in the game, if you disagree about that - I'd appreciate it if you could list some reasons as to why he's not. I've invested a lot of time into the multiplayer side of ME3 and personally I've come to the conclusion that Soldier is the weakest class. That doesn't mean he's not playable and is total garbage, it means every other class is better in one way or another.
The reason you'd choose Soldier in the previous versions of Mass Effect is because he could wield any weapon and had a bunch of different ammo types which made him be a versatile fighter without thinking to much about your squad selection. There are a few simple changes that could be made to the Soldier class that would drastically improve it.
> Adrenaline Rush being one: Regenerating 10 % of your shield when activated is not good enough when compared to an ability like Energy Drain or Biotic Charge.
> Frag grenades are inferor to any other type of grenade (Cluster Grenades being the best, without a doubt). They stagger enemies and cause little damage compared to other grenades, stickies are way better.
> Carnage (Krogan/Battlefield 3) is superior to Concussive Shot in every way. Esentially it does what the fourth (?) evolution of Carnage does: Knock enemies to the ground.
Put a Falcon on a Turian Soldier, you now have someone who is pumping out very solid AoE damage as well as AoE CC since every shot is a stagger(and yes it's effective in gold post-nerf, I can break 100k points in gold on a TS with Falcon II) Turian Soldiers in general can take a lot of the slow or high recoil weapons and make them into half decent weapons because of stability bonuses + Marksman. Turians with Proxy Mine can also debuff enemies for 20% more damage taken, something that only a Salarian Infiltrator could do and they wont sacrifice Tactical Cloak or Energy Drain to get it.
Adrenaline Rush is also a 65% damage boost as well as a free reload.
Frag Grenades I would have to agree are a very poor grenade, but that's one race of 3 that get them.
Not sure how Carnage being better than Concussive Shot is relevant. They're both Soldier abilities.
Soldiers are just very reliant on their guns since 2 of the 3 races have their main ability boosting weapon damage somehow. The biggest drawback to the Soldier is how good or bad your luck is with the RNG of equipment packs.
That isn't to say they're without issues, though. Just that they aren't really the worst. It's also kind of hard to say worst class since something like Salarian Engineer is going to be leagues ahead of the Quarian Engineer.
Sure, only the SI and TSol have Proximity mine with 20% increased damage. But Cryo blast can have a 25% damage increase and Warp can have a 15% damage increase, and both of them also weaken armor on top of it. Proxy mine does decent damage by itself, but cryo has a larger AoE and can stop things without protection dead in its track, and warp causes DoT and sets up/detonates biotic explosions. I would argue that both Cryo Blast and Warp are more useful to the team than Proxy Mine.
I like Soldiers and think they're plenty useful. And proxy mine is a perfectly fine ability. But it's debuff isn't anything special.

so what if I fully leveled my concussive shot instead of my nades? Conc shot comes back nades dont.
I was actually going to do that today when I get home. I was going to do this layout (showing levels 4-6)
AR - Hardening, Duration, Shield Boost
(I still would use shield boost, but with this set up AR would be more of a defensive move to replensive half your shield and get to safety and a 25% damage reduction, but you could still do some serious weapon damage while AR is active 45% weapon damage bonus)
CS - Force & Damage, Shatter, Shedder
(This is my prefered set up, but I haven't made up my mind for Shatter or Recharge Speed. I will need to see how quick CS will recharge once I have everything else leveled up accordingly.)
Training - Damage & Capacity, Power Damamge, Weapon Weight.
(With This set up I may still be able use my GPS, but I want to play around with what weapon(s) I use as I want to be able to spam CS)
Fitness - Durability, Shield Recharge, Fitness Expert
This might even fit my play style better than my current set up.
