Because the head/neck apparently seems seperated from the body from what people say.

As for asthetics .. that's why I'm a mage heh.

I think it's to hide the seam on the models where their neck connects to their body.

Or maybe a developer somewhere has strange interests...

The female warrior also has that collar thing.

Yes, they do, it's stupid. I've complained about it since I first saw it. They could have them like the guys with a regular neck, but then they wouldn't be able to show bewbies.

Maybe It's just to make the upper half of the body seem less 'naked'. Like an accessory...

It wouldn't be so bad if it looked different as I agree it does look like a collar. I wonder what else they might have used to accomplish the same thing?

I really dislike that stupid S/M thing on the women too, it immediately stuck out like a sore thumb.

I too am quite sure its purpose is to cover the neck seam. Anyone who's played Oblivion will know how ugly it can look... But yeah, they could probably have accomplished the same with something more aesthetically appealing. Those are just the default armors, though, so I wouldn't worry. I'm sure everyone will find some clothing that appeals to them.

It looks like it's because they use the same mesh for regular armors as they do for the ones that show skin. So what you're seeing is just a skin colored armor, what they made look like a collar is just the neck end of the armor. They should have just forgone the whole skin look entirely if they couldn't make the actual body underneath show through the armor's meshes, did the modellers run out of time?

:/

Erm, it is also possible that this is part of the armor the female characters are wearing when you start playing DA with them. Has anybody seen what the armor looks like later in the game? If not I'd suggest to take it easy until then. ;-)

The collar is a seam concealer. I think it can be esasily replaced by something more aesthetic with a mod.

If this were the case, I would think a necklace woulda done the job better. The seam explanation looks the most plausible to me so far.

I dunno bout the 'skin as part of armor' explanation either. This is the 21st century, shouldn't need such tricks anymore. If it is indeed true, then the midriff exposing female light armor is gonna stop bein hot & start bein a little creepy. Can ya imagine goin into an armor shop & browsing through light armors that have a female midriff belly 'image' on them & trying not to be creeped/wierded out? I hate it, but it is indeed to hide the neck connecting to the rest of the body. I really would have preferred it if they'd just brought the armor up to there, it's not like the female models have much in the bewb department to show off anyway.

The problem would have appeared then in the romance love scenes. In Oblvion gaming community, some moder came up with very beautiful necklaces and collars to hide the seams. I hope it will be the same here.

A few ideas for the modding community: Bow Tie; Scarf; Cloak; Neck scar from a failed hanging?; Tattoo; Turtlenecks; Pet weasel; and maybe a Beard? ;]

I like the pet weasel idea :) (Hermine for our aristocrats, of course.)

Yeah, Final Fantasy XI had pretty obvious "seam-covers" for its characters. Looked ridiculous, really. Everyone's underwear came with knee pads and other random-looking pieces of clothing.

Well, I'm not fond of it. I'm not sure why they couldn't have just had the armour come up higher on the neck. Though it could be that most of the armour in the game does, and if so, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Its not a big deal, just find a different set of armour in the game, problem solved.

You, I like^_^

I agree that's prolly a neck seam cover, and that it shoulda been handled differently, like a simple necklace, or i dunno, an actual armoured neck guard<_< (but that would be too practical I guess)
