 Well.

Now I come to it, I'm thinkin' I need a bit o' skull-scratchin' from all o' ye.

Lookin' about fer legs fer thet frisky hut, I tossed them regular chicken legs out, first off. Scale up miserable.

Came across the legs o' thet Project Q Harpy. More like it. But not so great when scaled up ta hold a house.

Lookin' about some more, I found a griffon, a tyrant king an' a screamin' eagle.

Thet griffon has the most chicken-like legs, but ta me they seem a bit spindly and add a bit more of a comic touch then I'm happy with:

Thet tyrant lizard, now. looks strong and menacing enow' I grant you. But not so chickinish, if ye follow. Still, I like them legs:

Third, an' me favorite by a smidge, be the screamin' eagle legs. Not so comical nor spindly as the griffon, but good, strong birdish legs:

So, what do ye think? Which set o' pegs should I use?

The first ones are definitely the most chickenish. But I also like the last ones the most. They look more menacing.

Great work by the way. Its about time!

[Edit... err what I meant by that was that it was about time we had Baba Yaga's hut. Your work has been great all along. *ahem*]

I always thought it was more stork like myself? BTW, there is a quasi Baba Yaga's Hut in NWN in the Mines and Caverns Tileset Platform 4 1x2 see pic 3. ;)

That hut is impressive! Agreed on the third version being the best.

@ Birdman: I like that first pic quite a bit. Especially the wild careening motion implied and that well defined wrist/talon curl.

However, the hut is already 5 meters tall. Cestus *will* stretch the shins a bit and exaggerate the wrist. That will bring the total height to 6 meters. Which is just barely plausible in game. :-P We don't want PCs attacking it's shins and we want the knockdown/gore anims to be... er, not absurd :-/

Also, this will most often be used in a creepy forest setting. I'll be giving the creature a perspace of 2 meters which will give it some pathing problems, but allow PCs to dodge between trees, etc. Giving it too large a perspace would trap it like a fly in the forest. Giving it too small a perspace means really nasty clipping as it moves *through* trees... Tradeoffs.

@ Jenna: Hah! You aint seen nuthin' yet ;-) That's a total mockup. This baby's gonna have all *kinds* of detail, including a couple custom emitters ;-) Though I imagine most of Cestus' time will be spent on the skinmesh legs and bird-like animations. Primary attacks will be "Stomp" and "Gore" (which implies pointy bits, don't it? ;-)

It's been a while since I read Russian Folktales, but as I recall, the hut stood so tall that a man could not enter while it was standing; it could only be entered when the hut 'roosted' down.

The hut has to sit.. and for those that grew up on the Quest for Glory PC game series (or "Hero's Quest" before it was renamed) You had to know the secret phrase "Hut of brown, Now sit down!"

The hut will have a "roosting" anim and I'm going to try to blend it into a placeable version of the same hut that will be "useable" however you wish to script to it.

And it is definitely too tall to enter while standing. Not to mention rather wild <not to say *mean*>...
And there is also a part of the folklore that says the door appears on the wrong side unless the hero knows how to find it...

In this case, the door is a "back door" ;-P This makes entry quite difficult while the thing is mobile and may explain some of it's unwillingness to allow entry...

Very cool.. also thanks for thinking of the forest pathing issues, because the current baba yaga quest I had been working on was in a forest already.

So, how are folks coming on your entries?

I finally decided that I'm going to be making a four smaller models (and possibly prefabs) based on mythological objects.

Dyrnwyn - an ancient british/welsh sword with a white hilt that blazes with fire in the hands of a "worthy or well-born man".  I'm going to make a model, then a prefab with a script that when equipped by a lawful good creature gains the fire VFX.
model + script + blueprint

Gáe Bulg - a deadly spear with seven points, each with seven barbs
model

Ruyi Jingu Bang - a black metal staff with a gold band at each end, it's the weapon of the mythological Monkey King.  It can change size, so this one will need a script, multiple blueprints, and multiple models (quarterstaff, club, placeable).
models + script + blueprints

Golden Apple - a shiny metallic placeable and a miscellaneous inventory item (so one can "pick up" the placeable via scripting and take it.
model + script

Model and graphic work done (icons and portraits).  Now onto blueprints and scripting.

All of the weapon models are the same part numbers (part 9, color 1).  The visible pieces are the "top" part, while the "middle" and "bottom" are blank models (because the custom models likely wouldn't mesh well with existing weapon parts).

Here's a look at most of the work...

The Monkey King was always my favorite. Love the Bang :-)

And I've always wanted to give celtic mythos more air-time, particularly Cu Chulain, his spear and the Irish Wolfhound. *sigh* someday :-)

Very cool stuff, as always, Lord Dragon.

That spear is a graphics-hefty weapon, so I would try to avoid having more than one or two on-screen at the same time. The model itself is 324 kb (compiled), and I had to turn off shadows on it because it was crashing my toolset (when I ticked on the "shadows" option along with area lighting and fog). It's built like my reforged weapons, so the round parts (such as the shaft and the main parts of the points) are really almost round (12 sides instead of the old style 4), and this one really is a spear with 7 points, each with 7 curved barbs.

Just to make it a little more "evil", the deadly end is also faintly self-illuminated, so it will glow red in darkness (and have a red tint over the black under regular lighting).

Yes, the game is getting on in years, which does mean a smaller community. But we keep making new things, because we the game lets us. And this monthly challenge thing is great, since it gets me making things I might not think of making otherwise and it get's anyone involved that want's to try to make something.

As far as keeping in touch with folks that have left...nope. Didn't get to know many previous members, so never kept in touch in the first place.

At the moment I'm still stuck in a hospital bed with no access to a computer... I don't suppose there's a Gmax app for Android phones? :P

That spear sounds scary - what's the poly count like on it? It totally looks awesome, though. :o

Technically, yes.  The model could be copied over and made into a dart.  However, as soon as it left a character's hand, the flying model would revert to the default flying dart appearance, and for a short time the target creature would show a dart sticking out of them (not the spear model).  I think that woult ruin the look if a hurtful looking spear suddenly shrank down to a dinky little dart when thrown.

With things like darts, shuriken, and throwing axes, the game uses a single model for each while in flight.  If you change that model, every such thrown weapons will have the same appearance.  My snowball override does this for a little bit of fun (overriding both the held default dart 1 model (and icon) and the in-flight/stuck-to-target one).  Yes, you can have a snowball fight in NWN, and with the right item properties it wouldn't have to be fatal. :)

A half day late, but I just emailed my submissions.

1 short sword (model + blueprint + script)
- on equipping, if the wielder is Lawful Good, it will gain the flaming VFX

1 spear (model + blueprint + script)
- on hit, has a 25% chance of activating the deadly magic...killing the target with no save or SR (if not a construct, elemental, undead, or ooze), but causing the loss of the spear until it's cut from the corpse (ie, looting the corpse to get the barbed spear back)

1 misc small golden apple (icon + model + blueprint)

1 golden apple placeable (model + blueprint)

1 magical staff (3 models + 1 misc small icon + 2 scripts + 4 blueprints)
- heavy scripting: 1 small sized misc item, that when activated becomes a club.  when club is activated, it becomes a quarterstaff.  when staff is activated, it becomes the misc. small item again.  if put down, any of the forms turns it into a massive pillar placeable.  if pillar is clicked on, it becomes a quarterstaff in owner's inventory
- set up so that the item has a "true owner", and only the true owner can turn it from a pillar into a staff (done via local variable).

2 portrait sets (for placeable apple and staff/pillar)
