I think I am the only player here not down on bashing Chobot. She did fine work in my opinion. I enjoyed dropping by her quarters after every mission to see what conversations she was having with Traynor. I sided with her when the crew tried to censor her journalism. And I felt sorry for her when I learned that Bekenstein was razed. She was emotionally distant, which provided an interesting counterpoint to the two other named reporters in the Mass Effect universe.

Seriously, why do you guys hate on her with about five threads a day? It's kind of creepy. Like a reverse fetish.

Aside from the obvious confilct of interest ..

The time and effort that went into her vocing the character, and making the 3D model could have been put towards an actual Tali reveal scene.

Emily Wong could have taken Allers place, and everything would have fit and worked out better.

I feel for her because I think she's baring a lot of the brunt for coming to embody the incestuous relationship between the devs/publishers and the gaming 'media'. It's not her fault that she's essentially an attractive girl who happens to be a gamer and made a good career out of it. Now she gets an opportunity to be in a game. Who wouldn't do that?

The question that needs to be asked is, why did Bioware see this as a better option than putting in an already established character with a pro VA.  And also why wasn't a reporter better utilized?

Because they went too far.
A cameo? Sure, why not. But they essentially gave a major supporting role to someone WHO IS NOT AN ACTRESS.
This is bizarre and unforgivable in the light of the fact that she was placed into a role that should've been given to Emily Wong or Khalisha Al-Jilani (both voiced by talented VAs) and comes in the light of major characters like Harbinger and well loved characters like Kal'Reegar being completely sidelined.

Therefore, the ire is justified.

To me it isn't her, it is a waste of a character.  She might not have been the best VA, but Allers is worthless.

Indeed.

The issue people have is the idea of a game review site having an employee in a product that they will review. I don't believe in speculation very much, but to be honest it doesn't look good for them.

Yeah the hate has been over the top. The character is flat but I don't know that it was Chobot's fault. Wasn't well written. Seemed slapped together. The IGN affiliation combined with one Moriarty has nerves raw here.

I had no idea who she was prior to finishing the game and reading about her here.
I didn't really think much about her as a character other than she gave me war assets, didn't really have much verbal interactions, and was really weird-looking...face, body-structure with a hideous outfit that didn't seem to fit with a military ship.
That being said, I also didn't know they had killed off Emily Wong via twitter and was wondering where she was in-game. I would have preferred an interaction with a known-character.

I think you're misunderstanding me.  I think the 'ire' for the decision to employ her was justified becaus it was an awful decision..  But that's not her fault.

Wow, this. I totally agree, but you're not the only one prepping the flame shields now.

I only feel mildly sympathetic for Chobot, as she should be well aware by now that in this line of work their are always supporters and detractors. I'm one of those detractors, and feel no regrets about it.

I feel bad for her. I get the impression that she's a fan, like us. Who wouldn't jump at the chance to be in a game like this? I think we could have overlooked any flaws in her performance and the character design, both visually and writing-wise, if it weren't for her connection to two prominent media companies that are primarily dedicated to reviewing video games. I'm not sure that there is anything shady going on there. But it just looks bad. That's not her fault though, and I don't think she should be getting near the abuse that she is.

EDIT:
Basically, I think all of this should be set squarely at EA/Bioware's feet. They made the decision to include her, and to basically use her to replace fan-favorite Emily Wong. Bad bad move there (shocking!).

Critisim of her performance is appropriate whether you like her performance or not. Her inclusion in the game is on Bioware, not her. The whole IGN thing on the other hand is a non-issue. People that love games shouldn't be paying attention to IGN anyway.
