I finished my first play through in 48.5 hours, and 75% of the optional quests, so I was fairly thorough.

I did skip the conversations in the first 20 hours of the game because I had heard them on a different toon.

Also, I was at 93% exploration.  I really can't figure out how people are spending so much time!  Obviously, I'm not missing anything.

Are you playing on Easy or Normal? I spent a lot of time in combat and also prepping for it (positioning and stuff before combat). I'd also do a lot of luring one or two enemies away from a big pack and to where my guys are setup way back for an ambush. That would take a lot of time.

Also some of the fights afterwards would wipe me out so bad that I had to go back to camp or somewhere to restock on health potions and the like (could be lots of running back)

If I was playing on an easier difficulty, I'd imagine that I'd just jump in there and spend a lot less time on prep and combat itself (no pausing) and I would have less need to go back to restock.

I am also picky about always returning to places where I left loot and picking it up to sell for some coin. Sometimes I would make multiple trips since I could not carry it all.

I wouldn't trust the online profiles for accuracy with people's charactors. Mine's off more than I even thought. It's only showing 4 characters and 800+ kills. It's missing three characters all together, about 30 levels on the other characters in total, god knows how much stat differences... etc. Seems the achievements might be updated but the characters aren't always. Mine seems to not be able to update since 11/25... I hear from many others that once it just stops, it's done. Not sure why though. Most obviously a bug somewhere... There's endless posts about this issue on this forum.

But anyhow, as many have mentioned, the obvious reason for your fast playthrough is you really didn't roll play the game and had to miss tons of sidequests. Something else also, try playing each type of opening class (dwarf common, dwarf noble, the city, country (forget the name at the) elf, mage, human, etc. The openings for each are a good 3-6 hours depending if you listen to dialog or what not and some really interesting stories.

But if you get all of the companions, and try the quests for each, or have the relationships; you'll spend a dozen hours or more on just those (as an example of more RPGing). I also play FPS games, competitively actually. But I'm an RPGer from the days of old at heart. Still waiting for the perfect RPG (not likely to ever happen though... computer form or not. Plenty of great ones though...). However, if your aptitude is not for the long story mode of RPGs, and you're more looking for faster action RPGs, I can see why you easily missed so much stuff.

As for PC vs other's, I have a friend playing on the 360 (though he wishes he'd got the PC version after seeing mine...). While the graphics and front end have a lot to be desired; it seems the content itself is still there at least for the most part so I doubt that has much to do with it. Although it is MUCH easier on the 360 (we both play in nightmare mode but still the console is even far easier than the PC, another reason he wishes he'd got the PC version) so that might also have some factor on the speed of your experience. But 38 hours for me (even skipping dialogs now that I've done half a dozen playthroughs through the first few cities) won't even get me through two towns out of lothering.

If you want to go around again; I would suggest try talking to everyone. Those with nothing to say will not have a dialog window. but you'd be suprised who does have something to say. And when you're done talking to someone, try again. Especially in places like the camp where you can literally spend hours just talking to them getting stories started (once you have the necessary approval).

One thing that is going to make a significant difference for play time is how long you take to select dialogue options. I often have to think long and carefully before choosing a line, especially in the beginning of runs when I'm still ironing out my character. It gets a bit faster for me after a while when I've gotten to think about various value judgments and how they define my character.

I know this way of playing is completely foreign to many people, I have a friend that always pick the most hilarious line for example, never mind the schizophrenic nature of all his characters.

I'm 45 hours into the game right now, and I have not yet been to Denerim, Redcliffe, or the Brecilian Forest.
I should clear 60 hours pretty easily.

At that rate you're easily going to clear 100 hours as you're not yet halfway into the game.

WOW. That's all I can say. I tried to do as much as I could in the game, and I couldn't extend the playthrough time past around 50 hours, even though I tried to drag the game out. That was on easy; but I beat a playthrough on normal in even less time (about 45 hours) although I didn't complete a lot of side quests. I don't know why people are complaining about a short playthrough time, my average for mass effect playthrough was only about 25-30 hours.

Look I am most definitely doing everything. I never skip dialog until several playthrougsh into the game. I do not see why you are continuing to press this issue. Can't you just take me at my word? Also my characters don't seem to be updating anymore on the profile page, and I'm not sure why. I even have one character that isn't even on the website.

You _think_ you are doing everything.  If you are not skipping through dialog and reading the codex entries as you get them and talking to every person that has a dialog response to you trying to talk to them, and you are picking up the quests and not just chosing the "I don't have time for this" option in every conversation, there is no way to complete an origin story in 30 minutes.

Percentage of World Explored only means you've been in each area, not that you've seen every bit of each area.

Percentage of Game Complete is almost assuredly only measuring how many achievements you have.

I am pressing this because I know I am not wasting time in the game, and I know that many other people who have played for over 80 hours aren't either.  At under 40 hours YOU. SKIPPED. STUFF. :D

But to save the trouble, I'll requote you -

and we can stop debating back and forth about it.  I don't believe you aren't skipping stuff, and you assert that you  are not skipping stuff.  There is an impasse and no point in arguing any further.

You may still have the last word, if you like. ^_^

Then I will have the last word. I know how to play these games and I know that I am doing everything. I'm not saying I don't have time for this. I'm good at these games. I remember where to go and what to do so it's not a surprise that I can beat the game in what you may consider a short period of time. I actually don't even think this is short. It still takes me about a week to complete a playthrough. This is a very long game, much longer than Mass Effect. I'm kind of insulted actually that you wont believe me.

My apologies, then.

I didn't mean to insult you.

It took me 73 hrs. for the first time on the PC version (normal difficult setting) and I missed quite a bit! If one uses a "walk through or anything like it", yes 38 hrs. is possible.

I am at about 140 hours and I still have quite a bit to do - the last map in the deep roads, Landsmeet and most of Denerim (I have only completed the market area of Denerim). Nor have I tried any 'boss' dragons. I will probably take about 180 hours. I am playing on normal with the tactics disabled so I pause numerous times in almost every battle - and some of them will take an hour to complete.

What about the plot helpers?

I disabled those as soon as I installed the game, but I suspect some parts of the game would go a lot faster (and I'd miss out onexploring the world) if I had them turned on.

I spent 70 hours playing the game and only hit 53% completed - I have other origins to do yet, obviously. Not sure how you got through so quickly.

And to the question of how many darkspawn one might kill - I stealthed my way through most of Orzammar and still had 700, so I can easily see where one would hit 1000 in a single play through.

I have to admit, I did turn these on twice.  Both times because I didn't feel like wandering all over an area I'd already cleared out in order to find something there (both had quests that moved to the final "find the spot" stage in a subsequent area, and since I always thoroughly explore every area the first time I enter it, I would have had to run all around an empty area.)  I felt a bit guilty about doing it, but it was better than spending 15-20 minutes just wandering around in circles.

Where did you find 1000 darkspawns by level 12? oO I'm well into my second playthrough (only 1 treaty left) and still have only about 700 darkspawn slain.

No idea really, I did Orz first though, so that might have something to do with it.  How the hell do you only hav 700 darkspawn slain?  The wilds and tower must crank you thrugh at LEAST 150-200.

Maybe it only counts darkspawn slain by the main character?

Are you sure that wasn't the 500 slain achievement?  My character got that one, but not the 1000, and she's level 17 and slays them at every opportunity.  If you hover over the icon for the 1000 achievement it says something like "may be over several playthroughs", suggesting it's not always (ever?) possible in one run.

I don't know about getting the 1000 at level 12, but it's certainly possible in 1 playthrough (as I got it on my first playthrough.)
