Lords Of Shadow-Let me get this straight, I'm part of the minority that LOVED this game(I also loved Vania' 64 though >.>). The ending completely blew however. Leaves dozens of questions unanswered, and Dracula isn't the final boss. Then after the credits roll you figure out that YOU are Dracula. WHAT THE **** KONAMI. Oh, and you had to buy *****y DLC to clear things up which wasn't worth it at all. Here's hoping ME3s DLC will actually be good.

I actually worked out that Gabe was Dracula after defeating Cornell. It was such an obvious twist. But they handled it really poorly, with basically no foreshadowing so that even though I worked it out 1/4 through the game it still came as a surprise. =P Also Jason Isaacs was Giant Space Satan From Nowhere.

Worse endings than ME3? I honestly can't think of any. Not that there aren't objectively worse endings, but you have to compare it firstly to what came before and secondly to the feeling it leaves you with. I'm all for sad and tragic endings if they leave you with a sense of satisfaction and closure, or heck even if they don't. Someone pointed out somewhere that ME3 basically genre-shifts from an epic to a tragedy in the closing five-ten minutes, which leaves massive audience dissonance. The main issue with the ending isn't necessarily that it is tragic but that the tragedy is poorly explained and makes no sense within both the setting and the genre of the narrative.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 was a blatant cliff-hanger ending, but I still really liked it. It was the most awesome troll finale ever.

Assasins Creed Brotherhood.

Brotherhood was 'bad' in the sense of what happened was just heartbreaking, but story wise, it was a GREAT twist that MADE sense (at least if you've been paying attention or have played The Lost Archive in AC:R at least).

Dragon Age 2's ending though... Though that is unfair, being DA2 was just awful all around.

Nothing, and I do mean nothing, is worse than the awful ending of the already notoriously awful game Limbo of the Lost. See it here (and keep the brain bleech handy) : www.youtube.com/watch

Worse endings than ME3....that's pretty tough.

I would say RAGE, L.A. Noire, Far Cry 2 and KOTOR 2. I really like all four of those games overall though.

Final Fantasy xiii-2. It was much more hopeless and frustrating.

Hey, at least there's a "to be continued" there! i'm curious to see the new Lightning story DLC.

OMG, SquareEnix has jumped on the DLC bandwagon?

...The end is near...

It's not fair to compare to most games. Mass Effect was an epic series overall. That's why we had high expectations for the ending.

If ME 3 was the first and only game in the series, most fans wouldn't care that much about the ending. We wouldn't sympathize as much with the characters as we do now after playing the three games.

Can't even compare to KOTOR and Dragon Age because 1 and 2 were seperate storylines.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but here goes my list:

-Final Fantasy VII. Ending was frustrating as hell (still a masterpiece though).
-Resident Evil 0. Actually the worst prequel ever made, not just the ending. This game should have never existed.
-Chrono Cross. Short and ambiguous.
-Diablo & Diablo II. Err...
-NWN & NWN2. Expansions "solved" their endings.
-Every Soul Calibur game up to date.
-PST. I liked the ending, just say it because it is actually a worse ending than the one of me3.
-Cataclysm. Just lame.

FF IV, I didn't like at all. It was pretty to look at, but that's it. And the ending made sense within the game world and provided closure and a visual epilogue of sorts.

I agree with RE 0, that was awful.

NWN & NWN2 were not given new endings by their expansions. NWN1 clearly stated that the hero of the first campaign faded into legend and myth and the character retired. The two expansions SoU and HotU were a NEW hero that only existed within the realm of the two expansions, also both of those expansions had satisfactory endings with closure and a proper epilogue.

NWN2 also gave closure because the temple you are in collapses and the game states that the threat is over, but that no one escaped alive. It wasn't until Mask of the Betrayer that you suddenly find out that you were 'whisked away' somehow and your PC from the first campaign actually survived somehow. (still haven't played Storm of Zehir though)

Adding to the OP's list though (despite my love for these series)

Quake 1 - the game made no sense at all, just running and killing things randomly, then having to teleport INTO a monster with an axe and then you jump through a 'gate' and credits role by.

Quake 2 - the ending was ruined by the expansions actually. Main game ended with the Macron being killed and you escaped the space station but are now adrift in space far from any of the human forces. The Expansions acted like the main campaign never happened!

Unreal Tournament/2003/2004 - All FPS games that you spent hours trying to 'build a team' and then it just says: "Yay! you won!" and thats it.

Unreal 2 - this was nearly identical to Quake 2. You lose your entire crew (in an event you can't even particpate in or have an option of saving them) and then you end up spaced like the marine in Q2 and Shepard in ME2. And then credits role without an epilogue letting you know if you even saved the universe or not.

Hmm...
Ending alone!?!
That I can recall... Pokemon Gold/Silver
Star Wars: Republic Commando, can't say why without spoiling it.
CoD: Black Ops, at least MW 1 + 2 seemed to tie-up the story.
KOTOR II: The Sith Lords, too many loose ends.
The Force Unleashed II, see above.

I really don't understand how people can say KOTOR II's ending is WORSE than ME3's. KOTOR II's ending was bad, yes. It left a lot of loose ends, but it wasn't the nonsensical mess that ME3's ending was. It didn't introduce a completely random new "enemy" into the ending to explain away everything that came before it. And, while it never came to fruition, KOTOR II's ending acted as a cliffhanger should there be a KOTOR III.

The introduction of the starchild OUT OF NOWHERE, and the fact they used him to deliver the rationale behind the ending we got, automatically makes ME3 worse than KOTOR II. At least KOTOR II, you knew who the heck Kreia was before you walked up to fight her. And at least the stuff Kreia says didn't completely destroy everything we'd done in the KOTOR universe, nor did it make it impossible for Star Wars to even continue afterward.

Heavy Rain. Great game, right up until they reveal who the Origami Killer is, then it all turns to crap and stops making sense. And yeah, they have the "not A B C" ending thing actually implemented, but it's still worse than ME3's endings. Oh, so and so survived or didn't here's a clip of them or not, whoopdeefreakindoo!

my guess is that there are plenty games with "worse"-endings, but seeing this great franchise ending this strange just kinda hurt.
NWN1 was pretty bad, but not just the ending, the entire stroy-line and everything surrounding it dialogue and plot-wise.

NWN1 wasn't bad at all. Fan's generally liked the overall plot though most found it repetitive in it's mid-game goals ("find 4 reagents" followed by "Find 2 types of proof" followed by "Find 4 words of power"). The overall revelation that there was an ancient race trapped within an alternate reality that is manipulating our own, was pretty original.

Also the game was one of the very first true adpatations of the table-top D&D ruleset which made it incredibly immersive on a technical level as well.

The fact that both expansion packs were even better (with HotU actually besting SoU which bested the original campaign) was a rare feat (though SoU felt really gimmicky at times and the sidequests seemed boring).

Actually I can think of only one movie (not game) that is tied for first place for worst ending created by man.

Skyline.

Actually, now that I think about it, Skyline deserves an award comparing with ME3.

For some reason the ending to Fallout 3 didn't bother me. I kind of liked being the wasteland liner who sacrificed him/herself to better the world. But thinking back now, it didn't bother me because there were no relationships to build so there was no one to go home to at the end of the day.

I think the fallout 3 ending would've been fine if you could send someone into the chamber.
