Very few games have pulled me in with the same emotional intanglement the Mass Effect series has.  This alone is what bums me out about the ending.  I can't think of another game that just pissed me off at the end of 100+ hours of brilliant gameplay.

But, a recent game has pissed me off for what I believe to be a lame ending to what could have been a great IP: id Software's Rage.  The game was great in my opinion.  But just as the game was finally getting really good, it just ends.  The game's end is literally the player taking an elevator ride to a platform, survive a horde attack for a few minutes, and then press a button for a 60 second outro video.  Lame.

Half Life 2: Episode 2 has to take the cake for bad endings.

It's ends on a cliff hanger and fans have been waiting every since 2007 to finish the story of Gordon Freeman. Half Life is the series that made Valve and now they won't even talk about it.

Half Life 2 EP2? Are you joking? It's a cliffhanger because is obviously not the end of the story. There are at least 2 games missing before the end.

It's the long delay that makes the ending bad. A cliffhanger really should be resolved while people still remember what the cliffhanger was.

KotOR 2: TSL's ending still strikes me as the all-time worst. The whole last planet is incoherent nonsense (except for the Darth Sion confrontation, which was great), and at the end absolutely nothing is resolved.

The correct question would be: trilogies with endings worse than Mass Effect.

Modern Warfare 3

But I should have known, the whole game was awful.

Riven: The Sequel to Myst. At the end of a game you fall through a rift in the universe and the main benevolent NPC basically says 'sorry about that, at least it's peaceful'.

Also, Armored Core: Nexus. (I think)

After defeating the final boss, the enemy weapon thing launches anyway and you spent the next x minutes fighting an endless horde of enemies, eventually ending with your death and the credits rolling

Literally can't think of any other, other than Deus Ex and maybe Fallout 3 before they fixed it.

-edit- Oh, and maybe rage. Last 10 minutes of rage was also pretty terrible now that I recall it.

I don't think anything truly compares to how bad the ending of me3 is though.

I'm surprised n-one of you have talked about the NWN2 ending.....as I recall the whole team fell into a - cave? in the ground? The reaction to this ending was pretty much the same as the ending to ME3. A lot of frustration and anger, untill Obsidan made two acclaimed expansions, both fanwise and review-wise.

Interestingly enough, not anyone (well, maybe one or two) didn't say way back in 2006 or 2007 that they thought Obsidian made the ending so that they, Obsidian, could sell 1) dlc or 2) expansions. Why it is then that everyone is saying this when Bioware/EA makes a similar ending to NWN2's?

Can't say i ever was quite as unsatisfied with a game's ending. But the closest i can think of would be System Shock 2. A brilliant game almost ruined by it's terrible ending, what a shame.

NWN2's ending was more like they ran out of time and slapped something together. Like grabbing their least charasmatic programmer and getting him to read the end script off of a cocktail napkin.

But, Mask of The Betrayer was awesome. One of the best games for D&D.

NWN2's ending made more sense than ME3's, ME3 was incoherent. NWN2 was just bad.

I've forgotten about: Dremfall. The Longest Journey. The first game came out in 1999 and the second game came out in 2007, I think. And since then, adventure game fans have waited for the third game or the story to end. Something similar happened to Still Life...the game just ends...as I recall it. Making people speculate a lot, then in 2010 or 2011 we've got Still Life 2.

Also, not the ending pr. se more like a ironi and sarcasm and a shadow of themselves, the old Might and Magic games (remember those?) from # MM6 and onwards seem to go overboard with having the ending being you fighting ---- aliens.....I was like O_O when I first saw this, and thought to myself: - what are aliens doing in a fantasy game...?

Some of the adventure game fans till waits for Syberia 3 as they feel the ending to Syberia 2 sort of leaves them with more questions than answers. In Syberia's case, the reason simply is that the developer ran out of time and money.

At least Kreia says some BS at the ending and there is supposed to be a sequel which is history now.
In ME3 you get Colors!

RYGAR on NES. I remember being so po'd when I finally finished that game, only to get this horrible ending. At the very least, I should have been enshrined as one of those buddah statues in the caves

LOL, I loved Rygar, but I agree with the ending.
But how about Karnov for the NES? (yes I'll reach back with you. Image IPB)
Just a black screen with the words 'The End'

Fallout: New Vegas - cool final level ruined by the inability to continue afterwords
Star Wars KotOR 2 - no closure on characters
Dragon Age 2 - again no closure on characters other then the fact they disbanded. Also the fact that you are trapped in your house afterwards

I'm 40 years old and I've played a lot of games over a lot of years. Nothing I've ever played has disappointed me so completely in the end. That is a marvel in and of itself.

Borderlands ending was poo, joke or not, it was rubbish and not because it was unexpected, it was indeed anti-climatic BUT I wasn't remotely invested in the characters so it didn't bother me. KOTOR 2 ending was bad but I knew it was coming so again didn't really bother me.

The only other game I raged at in a similar way was NWN 2, also Obsidian, but if I'm honest this was worse at least with NWN 2 you got a choice.

I'm older than you are (I win!) and I am also in the same disappointed state as you (and so many others).  The reason is that we all became invested in the characters and universe to an extent unlike any other games.  I certainly cared about the characters, the story, the universe more than any other game I've played.  No other game I have played has captured my imagination to the extent that the ME series has (did).  YEARS ago I got captured by the original Deus Ex but that was a bazillion years ago and only a single game (we wont talk about the second one).

It is a tribute to the writers/developers that they got his buy in an emotional investment...that is why the disappointment and anger is so intense.

It didn't violate everything in the game prior to its occurance.  It actually fit in quite well if you had any experience with the original Deus Ex a century or so ago.  It didn't kill you arbitrarily out of some twisted sense of artsyfartsy.
