Maybe not, but it would have still been close. But, put a healthy (ME2) Thane vs Kai Leng in a room and closing the door and what you have is Thane walking out 60 seconds later.

Shepard - "Thane, any problems with that guy?"

Thane - "No, just a little exercise is all. Let's go finish the Collectors for a real challenge."

Pretty much this.  Thane could barely breath during the fight (he says as much when you're talking to him over the radio before you find the Salarian Councellor), is suffering from Brain damage due to oxygen deprivation (mentioned during the first conversation with him on the Citadel) and basically got up off his death bed when the attack started, and he *Still* manages to stop Kai Leng from reaching his target.  I'm not a terribly big Thane fan, but yeah.  Thane at full strength would have left a Kai Leng shaped smear on the wall, without even breaking a hallucinogenic sweat.

Vasir.... Vasir.... Vasir.... *checks somewhere at the back of the line* *notices the Kai Leng of the game has fallen off* *at the end of the line Kai Leng of Mass Effect: Retribution is waiting* .... Vasir... oh, Kai Leng.

I've read the books and played the game. Tela vasir was harder on insanity to fight. So vasir wins. Leng in ME3 is just a cry baby whiner, who's very annoying.

I've never read the books or comics so Kai leng just comes off as a caricature and plot device. He serves his purpose for the story and provides some cool cut scenes but not much else. Vasir we spent the whole first part of LotSB chasing down. We got to know her as a Specter and traitor in fairly short amount of time. Perhaps if I had read the other material Kai Leng would come off as a bit more special, but knowing only the games, Vasir wins.

Game play wise Vasir was a harder fight for my Infiltrator. Kai Leng had too much plot armor (well, shields), but when the fight finally happened he was easy enough to take down. Balak was a harder fight in ME1 than Kai Leng.

Kai Leng is better at sending gloating emails though.

You know what else would have finished the job in that fight?

Some people who might have been around and happened to have, y'know, guns. People with the presence of mind to unload them on Leng.

I don't know where these people would have been though. I don't think one of them was named "Shepard."

We really made it this far into the thread without some smartass like me coming in and saying "Blasto the Hanar Spectre?"

This one's work here is done.

Yeah, I saw that. He's good. Don't get me wrong. But is he better than Blasto?

These are the two the thread should be about, damn it.

Kai Leng was a much greater opponent for Shepard than Tela Vasir. He killed one of his friends or a Councilor at Citadel right before crashing his car; he best Shepard on Thessia and got the Prothean VI and beat him to Sanctuary where he can kill another friend/LI and takes the research there before Shepard arrives.

Tela Vasir is the harder boss, though.

Vasir at all levels. Leng never interested me.

The fact we're comparing a minor DLC villain with a whole game's secondary-villain-accomplice, and the minor villain still has better development, is not very encouraging.

Kai Leng wasn't a greater opponent, he was the more apt at using Plot Armor, and cinematics to his advantage.

Agreed, if it wasn't for that gunship and his amor that didn't go down at certain points. He would of been killed the first time the player and him battled.

If we are going to deny a character's strengths or weaknesses by calling it "plot armor", we migh as well do the same for everyone.

Tela Vasir crashed her car, lost gallons of blood was still able to fight. Plot armor.
Tali kills Legion with a simple knife. Cinematics.
Thane kills armored mercs with his bare hands. Cinematics.

Yeah, Kai Leng wasn't an hard boss fight. He was still one of Shepard's greatest nemesis in the entire series.

If we talk about Retribution Leng than he would win easily. If we talk about the cerial stealing Space Ninja from Deception and ME3 though, well...

Krogan: Top approach, double strike to eye ridge, slide down between blinded target's rising arms, precision nerve strike to throat, secondary nerve strike to counter blood-rage, QUAD-KICK to bend target, grip each side of skull, running leapping spinning neck-snap.   ALTERNATE:BOMB.

Vasir was also just a much more interesting character. She was a really perfect "Renegade" Spectre. The final scene with her where she's saying "Don't you dare judge me." was incredibly well done, imo. Kai Leng... is just a space-ninja that starts up a cinematic every time you see him, and does nothing but fight.

Kai Leng was a stronger character, personality wise, in "Retribution". A Renegade N7 who would protect humanity at the expense of anything else. He was a Dark version of Shepard.
Admitedlly, while he still has some interesting lines in ME3 "We evolve or we die, those are the options", he was butchered much like everything else in Cerberus.
A real pity, he had more lines in the leak.

Vasir would kick Kai Leng's cybernetic ass.

Kai Leng: hahahaha - i'm going to stab you now
Vasir: <biotic teleport behind him> really?
Kai Leng: <spins around>
Vasir: <teleports behind him again and shoots his ass>

Tela Vasir would wipe the floor with Kai Leng
she was also a much MUCH better character, and someone I would have loved to have gotten back on my side and had as a squadmate

The issue with Kai Leng is simply that he can't fight by himself. He always needs a full Cerberus Squad and gun ship to back him up. I think that speaks for itself on who would win such a fight.

Vasir had rocket drones and mercenaries to back her up.
