I don't know what you all are doing wrong.....he was different for my human and my elf, but he was a man of many positions. Alistair, on the other hand, was a one trick pony....but that's okay...he's just so frickin hawt, I got over it.Taritu wrote...
Bottoms with a human, tops an elf, I'm told.

Is Zev even worth the trouble?

Zev is ironically more of a fully developed character than Alister who is, it must be said, far less annoying than Anomen. The main attraction of playing a female in BG2 was taking Anomen, manipulating him into failing his test, and leaving him a sorry, bitter, deranged wreak of a human being as a tribute to girlfriends everywhere. God, I hated Anomen.
Alister is such a tribute to the non-threatening boyband material its fairly hilarious. Innocent abroad, a virgin reluctant to move to a physical relationship ( yes ladies, you can be quite sure you will be taking the lead...no pressure), no real baggage other than being a prince ( 9 year old girl wish fufillment...), humour as a crutch to invite some mothering from a female who has to be a little more mature practically by default. Oh yeah, and his deepest held wish is to settle down somewhere and discover the joys of a real family.
Dont get me wrong, hes not Anomen. Though theres a guilty pleasure in leading him up the garden path, and then cutting him off and leaving him a bitter, deranged wreak of a human being as a tribute to girlfriends everywhere
Zev has some fake depth at least, with his talk of scars and his reluctance to actually emotionally engage. Plus hes a DW rogue assassin and thus awesome by default.

Am romancing Zev this playthrough (just into "care" stage) and so far his romance seems fun. He did not betray me last playthrough when I romanced Alistair, he helped in the fight against Talesin (sp) and stayed with me as friend in the epilogue when I became Alistair's chancellor (I gave up Alistair after Landsmeet because my elf was unlikely (and unsuitable) to give him a legitimate heir. He is an awesome DPS character if handled correctly (do not put him toe to toe in front of an enemy- this is not what a rogue is for). I played a Dalish rogue last time so I was running a 2 rogue party with Zev, Alistair and Morrigan- it was lots of fun. I am playing a mage this time (again with a 2 rogue party; Zev, Leliana and Alistair or Sten depending on the situation.

It's hard to avoid Zen's romances if you know what makes Zev tick. All that is required is that you respect his profession and background. My problem was actually to avoid it as I wasn't interested.

Zev is a Dex rogue with not enough Dex, that works very bad when Dex bug is still there.

I tried to take Zevran with my party this time. I really tried. He did seem to have some good voice acting and banter but I found him just too freaking useless for words in combat (if I wasn't micro managing his every move) and after trying to assassinate me he told me a bald faced lie. That he could pick locks. He had zero ranks in lock picking when I got him so I have a guy that tried to kill me, that can't pick a lock at the time I pick him up and who dies in dang near every battle. I punted him.
Perhaps I'll try again sometime but the female character I am playing right at the moment is kind of a no nonsense type and I felt I was really stretching the bounds even letting him live in the first place.

What makes Zevran horrible in combat is the that the game does a horrible job of auto-leveling him when you first get him. The game also does a horrible job of leveling him from that point on if you let the game level him on its own. He's meant to be a cunning rogue. Obvious, by the fact that when you first acquire him as a companion, he has Lethality no matter what. But his cunning score is crap. If you play the PC version, use the the respec mod to adjust his attributes and Zevran can actually dish out the damage. He just takes a bit of micromanagement (as you would with any melee rogue) since you need to constantly position him behind a target instead of just letting him fly. Bioware really should have put in an "attack from behind" option in the tactics menu. Although from what I understand that would be a gigantic pain in the arse to do coding-wise.

He's worth it if you're willing to wait a long time for him to confess his feelings...and if you're willing to give him a chance and get to know him.
He was pretty terrible the first few levels after I got him, and yes, even after switching off his Tactics, he tended to run headfirst into enemies without stealthing, and then attack them head on. Half the time when I wasn't micromanaging him, I would find him in some random corner tanking a yellow-nameplated monster o.O I actually think he tanked the Archdemon for a good chunk of time each of the 5 times I played through the ending. But other than that, he did some pretty nice damage, and was also good for his stuns

For those of you who are put off by Zevran's pretty-boy looks (I've seen lots of posts about this), I'd suggest adding the Project Beauty mod available from Dragon Age Nexus. It makes him a bit darker looking/slightly manly-er (for an Elf). There are other great morphs in that package as well. I don't use them all, but the ones I do use add a lot to my immersion.
