So I know the Mage Origin has you starting at the tower, but does it say anything about who or what your character was before they came to the tower? Is it assumed they've been raised there their whole life? Also, is there any difference between elves and humans, if it mentions anything about your character's past before the Circle?

I am not sure 100%, but I think a dialogue with Wynne later on in game can let you say your background. Apart from that, nothing that I know. It would be interesting knowing though.

There are a few dialogues where you can mention where your character is from, but it doesn't have much impact on the story. If you're an elven mage, NPCs make racist remarks towards you in addition to prejudiced remarks for being a mage. Double hate, there. If you're a female mage you get an extra slice of dialogue with a certain templar in the Circle Tower.

Just by observation in the game, I'd say the human world has little control over Dalish elves, so most, if not all elven mages in the tower are from city elves. Human mages would be more widespread around Fereldan.

You're told you were brought to the tower at a young age, so I think it's left to you to decide how young and what your character might remember of life before the tower.

that extra slice of dialog in the tower with the Templar. I may have came on to strong for him and made him run away blushing. If I choose to be more lady like would we hook up together?

thanks for all the replies. i'm taking a few days off from the game after finally beating the game with a rogue but I'm gonna make a mage soon and wanted to brainstorm some character concepts in the meantime.

From the lore, I think you don't develop magic powers late on. You have them young or you don't. And usually, you are quickly sent to the tower of Magi. So you don't have too much of a background. You can however from discussion decide how you see your powers: gift or curse.

To my knowledge, it's not possible. A shame, he's adorable, isn't he?Ron Brugal wrote...

Human Mage = Human Commoner
Elf Mage= Elf Commoner.
I think both the manual and character creator mentions this fact.

The game does assume that you knew your family (or at least your mother) before being brought to the tower, but that's about it.
In other points of the game you have the option to claim to have seen Denerim, but it's left up to whether you're telling the truth.

I've played as an Elven mage twice. You get the chance to say you came from the Denerim alienage, or else you don't remember life before the tower. Regardless, the Dalish treat you like a city elf (playing as a city elf too, I can say the dialogue is identical), so you're likely not from the Dales.
