I hardly use tactics at all except for couple for heals pretty much. I just control all the companions. Then they do what I want (Most of the time)

1.Self : Any : Activate blood magic
2.Enemy : Any : Blood wound
3.Self Health < 50% : Deactivate blood magic

This shouldn't work. Let's say your health is at 50%.

First Pass:
1 > Blood Magic isn't active, activate. End.
Second Pass:
1 > Blood Magic is already active, next.
2 > Blood Wound is available, use Blood Wound. End.
Third Pass:
1 > Blood Magic is already active, next.
2 > Blood Wound is on cooldown, next.
3 > Health is less than 50%, deactivate Blood Magic. End.
Fourth Pass:
1 > Blood Magic isn't active, activate. End.
Fifth Pass:
1 > Blood Magic is already active, next.
2 > Blood Wound is on cooldown, next.
3 > Health is less than 50%, deactivate Blood Magic. End.
Sixth Pass:
1 > Blood Magic isn't active, activate. End.
Seventh Pass:
1 > Blood Magic is already active, next.
2 > Blood Wound is available, use Blood Wound. End.

You'll just lock her into constantly turning on and off Blood Magic (depending on if the cooldown is up) and using Blood Wound at every opportunity. She'll practically kill herself.

What it should be is:
1. Self Health < 50%: Deactivate Blood Magic
2. Self Health >= 50%: Activate Blood Magic
3. Enemy: Any: Blood Wound

1 and 2 are interchangeable, since only one condition will return true at any one time. You have to learn to use the tactics before complaining about them. Although there's far too few slots in an unmodded game.

I played nightmare through with Alistair, Dog, my human rogue and morrigan with nothing but the basic heal (she had sleep and whatnot, control the battlefield and you don't take damage) The game was decided simple, I rarely took control of the party members, and didn't bother to set up custom tactics.

I pause every now and then in normal fights, fairly frequently on bosses just to set everyone back in line. I didn't lost many party members in fights, especially not the mages. Dog fell most often, but to be fair, he is weak compared to other members, only really good at downing enemy mages with overwhelm

My current play is also going well with a mage, Sten 2h sword as tank, Leliana with a bow and Morrigan.  and no, I am not using forcefield(s)

Because that defeats the purpose of making your character a rogue and not just a blood mage to replace morrigan?

Edit : I put these tactics on

Morrigan
1.Self : Any : Activate blood magic
2.Enemy : Any : Blood wound
3.Self Health < 50% : Deactivate blood magic

Allistar :
Enemy attacking Morrigan : Attack
Enemy attacking Wynne : Attack
HOPEFULLY this fixes up their stupid issues

You got Morrigan into a loop.
Alistair. Instead of attack you could even use higher arrgo generate talets like Overpower. So even the mob don't turn to him it would be stunned.

I'm currently running Archer Rogue, Shale (Tank), Leliana (Archer) and Morrigan ("Heal" is her sole healing spell). I micromange pretty extensivly on nightmare. Forcefield literally makes fights easy-mode. Mix that with Cone of Cold, Mana Clash, Sleep, Waking Nightmare, and soon Blood Wound, its very easy just aslong as I think before I act. That, or I simply have Shale doing practically nothing except guzzling Poultices.

I mostly fixed them up

Morrigan leveld up and got more slots , I decided to accept her as a both specializations wasted mage , threw out the blood magic completely added mind blast as a tactic. I guess if I ever think blood magics nessicary for a fight I'll switch and do it myself

Added tactics to Alistar to attack whatever attacks Wynne or Morrigan (& it seems to work)

I agree that "attack" won't really do anything.

Threat is generated depending on ability used (generally minimal) and damage dealt.

If Wynne/Morrigan is dealing 50 damage while Alistair is vainly hacking away at the same target for 20 damage, he won't usually draw enough threat. Depends on what they're tossing out though.

And Mind Blast is awesome.

Instead of going for blood wound directly, I recommend the Sleep spell.

It can hold many targets as well as blood wound, and it doesn't generate any aggro on your mage.

Furthermore, if you really have trouble keeping Morrigan alive, set up a glyph of repulsion on her at the start of the fight.

Or ... ahem.... self: Health <=25% - Activate Force Field! :P

I also agree that attack (or backstabbing) draws aggro very little aggro. The special abilities or spells are aggro magnets though.

That's how rogues can get away with their crazy dps; while mages need to run and spam CoC when they unleash just a few spells.

You are complaining that you can't do very well without micromanagement on the highest difficulty settings, despite the fact that those settings specifically say they require heavy micromanagement. I don't quite get it. The game lets you pause any time you want to issue orders and manage your strategy. Why not take advantage of that and just do it yourself?
